Yuan ti and tieflings are fairly recent additions to the Realms in general and Waterdeep nobility in particular. I don't know the intent of the person who added this lore, so I really can't comment. All I can tell you is that when I wrote Dream Spheres, the nobility of Waterdeep was so predominantly human that the situation strongly suggested a cultural bias at work. |

BTW, I love your Best of EC collection, and I've been waiting for it since I first hear it. I especially liked the 'Thornhold' story, which gave poor Algorind some credit (paladins are an old fave of mine in D&D since I first read 'Three Hearts and Three Lions'). Was also able to get the 'Starlight & Shadows' boxed set, which I thought was out of print, so I've had a good weekend. Thanks for all the great novels you've written, I love them.

Oh, trust me, these kids are not impressed by anything to do with books or writers. It was a small group--only eleven--but of that, only one, possibly two kids ever read for pleasure.

Elaine, when I got my copy of the anthology and saw Arilyn on the cover I thought "damn, Danilo is a really lucky man".

You think? IMO, the depiction of Arilyn was a tad too butch. I see her as being decidedly more delicate. Other than that, no complaints.

Possibly, but I rather doubt it. WotC likes to try to keep somewhat close to other (3E) depictions; for example, his cover on a Dragon magazine was closely modeled on the illustration in the 3E FRCS. |

However, I can answer the narrower aspect of this question, to whit: in the Realms, the terms King, Queen, Prince and Princess all have elven linguistic roots, and are still used by elves of many communities. A few ancient elven titles were revived in Cormanthyr in reverence to the “lost glories” of elder elven realms. These include:
• Coronal (literal meaning ‘wise elder’ but really meaning: chief justice, mayor, and later emperor) pronounced: “core-OH-nul”] [plural form: coronals]
• Lusabrar (literal meaning ‘sword of the people’ but really meaning: war-leader; that is: A war-leader or commander rather than THE war-leader or commander-in-chief, because there would usually be multiple lusabren) [pronounced: “luhss-AB-rar”] [plural form: lusbaren]
• Mraerital (literal meaning ‘vigilance of the people’ but really meaning envoy, herald, and observer; watching, witnessing [including formal agreements], and gathering intelligence openly, never stealthy spying) [pronounced: “mur-AIR-it-all”] [plural form: Mraeritar]

The term "coronal" is not quite the same as "king." The moonblades were created for the establishment of a hereditary monarchy. We understand "king" as being a hereditary title. Also, Evermeet has Arthurian undertones, and "king" is much more resonant a title.
I should also point out from an out-of-game viewpoint that the novel was written BEFORE the boxed set The Elves of Cormanthyr was published. If my memory serves, the title "coronal" did not appear before this publication. But even if I'd heard the title, I wouldn't have used it. Zaor was Evermeet's first king. Amlaruil rules as queen. That, to me, sounds right and good. It's really that simple--nothing terribly complicated about it.

I've just read your history of the crinti.
By the end of the text you write :
"It seems likely that the worship of Shaar will become an important force in Dambrath society. The recent discovery of the Shadow Weave is a subject of great interest to the Crinti, who are well suited by temperament and tradition to this new form of sorcery"
In France, we write Shar for the deity and Shaar for the desert. I saw in U.S. books that it was the same for you.
so, which one did you talk about ? The deity I think, but...

Hello,
I just wanted to mentioned that I just finished your anthology, and I loved it. I actually think I like some of the new stories the best. The "Tribute" folk tale was a pleasure to read, and makes me want more of those Deep Waters stories. And I loved the story about Liriel--it was short, yet there was so much packed into it and made me think about issues I've wondered about before (such as, if a god knows everything in a person's heart, does anyone really have any privacy?).

I figured on Ka'Narlist 'just' being a very powerful (epic-level) wizard myself, and that his power appealed to the Elder Eye. I also got the idea that all this was long before old Ghauny eradicated his sentient worshippers and became Lord of the Gibbering Hordes. And I wonder, what if anything did Lolth have to do with it? According to Miss Cunningham's book Evermeet, Lolth did take Ka'Narlist as a consort for a while... Maybe she didn't want to share her man with a glob of sentient slime?
BTW, Miss Cunningham, are there any plans at all for a story in which we finally see that SOB Ka'Narlist get his comeuppance? And hmm, maybe it could get tied into how and why Ghaunadar destroyed his own followers? If Ka'Narlist was the Eye's greatest worshipper, then it seems appropriate that the downfall of one should be linked to the downfall of the other.
Oh yes -- I like that the drow were dark-skinned long before they went Below. I got the idea from various writings that the drow were the most "sun-oriented" of the elves, and that they had at least a few of their innate powers before they were damned by the Seldarine (possibly due to eugenics experiments by wizards like Ka'Narlist?), and that the real damage from the curse was that the drow lost the ability to live under the sun they favored for so long. |
