This thread is a log of the adventures of my Players in the Sword Coast campaign.

The campaign began in December 2006

Session 1: Presequel
The Sahuagin Meance

The Presequel for the campaign began in 1370 and roughly a 10 day after the prologue of Eds and Elaines City of Splendors novel had concluded (ie the Sahuagin have just attacked Waterdeep) The Sahuagin leader having failed to take Waterdeep has decided to it Baldurs gate next but in the interests of stoping Waterdeep sending reinforcements to the city has decided to try and take the Daggerford so Waterdeep can not easily send suplies south.

The High Guard (Or the Third Company) had been recalled to Waterdeep to help defend the city from the Sahugin meance this has left the towns militia as Daggerfords only defence.

The Duke upon hearing of a large force of Sahuagin marching east along the Delimbiyr decides that they will have to fight the Sahuagin on towns walls to this end he raises the towns militia to begin preparations for the defence of the town. He also summons a group of the towns youngsters, he dubs them the Dukes Runners (they mainly made up of 13-15 year olds who have yet to enter service in the militia)The duke uses this group to perform odd jobs that he cant spare men from the miltia for. One of the characters is given a message from the Duke and told she is to go to Waterdeep and return with the High Guard another is instructed to head down river and bring word when the Sahuagin get within a days march of the city.

Both the characters arrive back in town ahead of the Sahuagin horde and the following day the Sahuagin assault the city. The PCs (only 1st level commoners) do not participate in the fight on walls and spend most of their time dragging fallen militia members to the towns temples and taking healing potions to the men on the walls

After a night of vicious fighting on the walls the Sahuagin horde is broken and flees back to the sea

Later the Duke introduces his "runners" to sveral prominient members of Daggerford society and asks them what they plan to do with themselves one character decides she wants to be a Bard and apprentices herself to Janssen a retired bard living in Daggerford. The other decides he wants to learn the ways of the Knight and becomes Freya Silverblade (The Captain of waterdeeps High Guard Company) Squire

Session 2: Into the Catacombs

The campaign continues 3 years later, it is now the 5th day of Hammer in 1373 The Year of rogue Dragons

The session begins in the Lady Luck Tavern in Daggerford the 2 characters from the presequel have decided to do some adventuring and are asking Darryl Orcslayer the innkeeper whether hes heard anything going on. He tells them a couple of things they might be interested in

Duke Pwyll is looking for an adventuring party to deal with a tribe of Lizard men who have come out of the Lizard marsh and are blocking the Trade way and preventing caravans from reaching Daggerford from the south

Lady Bronwyn has put out the word that shes looking for a party to investigate a series of catacombs that some masons have discovered beneath the Ducal castle

Darryl points out a badly burnt man sitting at one of the the tables in the inn and says he's selling a map to a dead dragons lair for 500gp

Also sitting at a table in the inn is Scareth a traveler from Waterdeep upon hearing what the other characters are planning he approaches them and asks them whether he might join them Scareth is Favoured Soul of Helm. The players agree and the 3 head up to the Ducal castle to speak to Lady Bronwyn

Lady Bronwyn tells them that a party of Masons working in the castle accidently discovered a hidden catacomb beneath the castle when a wall they where working on collapsed. She tells them that she believes the ruins maybe from the Barony of Stepping falls a settlement that existed in these lands long before Daggerford was founded. She gives the characters a Potion of Cure light wounds each and tells them she will give them 1000gp when they retur, they must give Bronwyn first option on any relics they find.

The party descends into the crypts only to find that Daggerford sewers have broken into the catacombs and the area is partially flooded. The first room they find is an ancient Shrine to the dead god Mykrul inside is large 10 foot tall scythe wielding statue of Mykrul and 7 smaller statues of cloaked skeletons also wielding scythes. The party break the smaller statues then examine the statue of Mykrul, the party cast detect magic and discover the large scythe the statue grasps is magical. They decides to break the statues hands in order to get the large scythe however this results in them triggering a trap which causes the statue to swing the scythe down at the party and it injures the Knight. They grab the Scythe and also uncover a magical dagger hidden under the altar

The party then head deeper into the catacombs were they discover a group of jail cells inside one of them is a badly broken orc skeleton and a dire rat, after dispatching the rat the party examine the Skeleton and discover the orc was brutually tortured before it died. Later the party discover a score of Orc skeletons piled high in a corridor these seem to have died in battle. Further on the party find a room with a coffin in it expecting a vampire or some other hidious undead the party open the coffin. Only to be attacked by a Skeletal rat swarm. After dispaching the swarm the party heads to the last unexplorered room and after opening the door are atacked by a Vampire Spawn wielding a mace. Upon vanquishing the blood sucker the party recovers the mace and Ioun stone. They return to Bronwyn and she claims the mace as a relic and gives the party their reward

Session 3
A Disruption to trade

The party return to the inn

They notice that the badly burnt man offering to sell the map is gone Darryl tells them that another group of adventurers came in after they left and bought it from him

Darryl tells them that Duke is still looking for men to deal with the Lizardmen and that a merchant was looking for guards for a caravan he was sending to Waterdeep.

At this point prices have risen in Daggerford for all goods in PHB by 10% due to shortages caused by the Lizardmen blockade of the Trade way

A Moon elf Rogue/Warmage by the name of Silar Floshin joins the party at this point

The party decides to speak to Duke Pwyll. He informs them that he will reward them with 2000gp if they can remove the lizardmen from the trade way. The Duke tells the characters that its up to them how they do it he just wants the lizardmen gone say the merchants will get off his back!

The players cleverly decide that they'll buy a cart and approach the lizardmen pretending to be merchants but first they decide to visit Cromms hold and visit Silar Great aunt Shalendra Floshin the leader of the outpost at Cromms Hold. Shalendra said she hadnt seen any lizardmen but she had heard some strange roaring at night coming from the swamp.

On the way to the blockade the party where accosted by a Brass dragon by the name of Amnehodenphinix who landed in front of the partys cart and absolutely insisted that they couldnt leave until they'd had a nice long chat. During their conversation Amnehodenphinix told them that when he flew over the lizard marsh the blacks seemed to be rather active. The conversation came to an end when something stange seemed to come over the brass and he became aggressive growling and snarling until he suddenly came out of it and abruptly flew away without saying anything.

The party then headed on to the Lizardmen blockade where they were met by a patrol who demanded they hand over their weapons and leave. Using some fast talking the Knight managed to convince the patrol leader to take him to the tribes chiefian. The chiefian told the knight that a week ago the Black Dragons of the marsh had awaken and begun attacking the tribe., the tribes bone and wooden weapons proved to be useless against the blacks so he decided led the tribe onto the trade way and take metal weapons from the travelers using the road. He tells the Knight that they wont leave until they have enough metal weapons to equip his warriors so they can reclaim their tribal lands from the Dragons.

The Knight offered to go to Daggerford and buy the weapons from the towns black smiths and bring him the weapons. The chiefian said if they party did that they would stop blockading the trade way.

The party returned to Daggerford and told Duke Pwyll what they had learned, he was concerned that the weapons they gave the Lizardmen might be used against his people but the party convinced him that the weapons would rust and become useless after prolonged exposure to the marsh.

They then spoke to Delfen Ondabarl (Daggerfords resident Archmage) and told him about the strange dragon behaviour he said that he did not know alot about dragons but it sounded like they may have contracted some sort of dragon disease. The Favoured Soul asked Delfen if he knew any sages who specialised in dragons and Delfen told him that they should speak to Maaril the Dragon Mage of waterdeep although he warned them some people who approached Maarils tower where never seen again! The party thanked Delfen and the following day brought the weapons to the Lizardmen they then offered ro help the tribe hunt down the dragons the chiefian agreed and they entered the marsh.

After several days of searching and finding nothing more than a Large Viper that managed to poison the Bard the party finally came across a very young Black dragon and managed to defeat it. The Knight decided that they would take the dragons corpse back to town and try it sell it to a mage or a potion maker. The party decided that they'd had enough of the marsh and headed back to Daggerford to collect their reward from Duke Pwyll and the Bard and Knight did some training with their mentors.

Several days later a Jolin Morlic a warrior from the church of Tempus approached the party and told them that Baergon Bluesword, the leader of the temple wished to speak with them. Baergon greeted the party and told Tatiana Urmbrusk that he had served along side the her uncle Bjorn in the last war with the fiends of Dragonspear. He informed them that he had an urgent shipment of supplies for the Clerics and warriors of Tempus who guarded Dragonspear castle and the shipment had been delayed thanks to the Lizardmens blockade. Would thy be willing to escort the supplies to Dragonspear?

They agreed

The party's journy was fairly mundane, running into several merchants heading north to Daggerford and beyond but on the 4th night they where attacked by a werewolf who had been drawn to the campsite by the smell of rotting black dragon flesh (the Knight never told me that he sold the corpse so it was assumed that he was still carrying it ) after killing the werewolf they continued on there way

On the 5th day they where approached by another merchant caravan heading north the party inquired how the road was ahead and the merchants told them the road was clear but a battle seemed to be raging at the ruins of Dragonspear castle between the Clerics of Tempus and the a tribe of Bugbears. The caravan was escorted by 8 guards on horse back each guard had a shield slung over his back with a leather covering over its heraldry except for one guard whose cover had half fallen off revealing a black sceptre emitting green rays on a gold disc clutched in the talons of a black wyrm. The Knight recognised this as the symbol of the Zhentarim, the party tried distract the guards so they could poke around abit in the wagons but they didnt spot anything suspecious so they had to let them go.

The next day they reached the ruins of Dragonspear caslte where a battle was being fought between the clerics and the bugbears

and thats where session 3 ended

who is in the party?

When hinges creak in doorless chambers and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls, whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still, that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight.

Session 4
Death rid of the High Guards.

Todays session began with the party witnessing the Bugbears breaking into the ruins of Dragonspear castles keep. The PCs came in behind the bugbears and attacked them while they where fighting the shrines clerics. After a bloody battle the PCs helped the clerics of Tempus route the bugbears and drive them from the castle. The Clerics rewarded the party by enchanting one item per character. After staying at Dragonspear castle for around 5 days the players head back to Daggerford. The players invited an NPC, Jorlin Morlic to join the party (Jorlin is a fgihter whose gaol is to become a Divine champion of Tempus, he wields a Bastard sword in one hand a Battleaxe in the other)

The party returned to Daggerford without further incident but noticed that none of the High Guards troops where in town. They asked around and where told that a Huge Fang Dragon had appeared north of Daggerford several days ago and begun attacking Hamlets and merchant cavarans traveling south from Waterdeep. The High Guard had been dispatched to deal wtih the threat. The party decided to try and catch up with the High Guards and see if they could help.

Just as the party caught sight of the High Guards marching north along the trade way the Fang Dragon appaeared slamming down in the middle of the column and mauling the troops. Much to the players suprise the Fang Dragon spat acid killing dozens of troops. The parties Bard knew that this was wrong and attempted to disbelieve what he thought might be an illusion he suceeded, the Fang Dragon was an Illusion the dragon was actually a huge black who was missing one of its horns.

While the party watched in horror a wizard dressed in purple robes teleported in amongst them. The party recognised him as the man who had tried to sell a map to a dragons lair several weeks ago. He then gloated how he had tricked another adventuring party into traveling to Maelestor rex, (an Ancient Black Dragon that had long plagued the region) lair and awaken the beast. He also made several comments that made the partys bard believe he had ties to the Cult of the Dragon. He then summoned Maelestor to him, the dragon wanted to kill th party but the mysterious wizard said he it would be better if they let the party go so they could spread word of the Sword coasts impending doom at the claws of the sacred ones and their servants he then flew off north on the dragons back.

The party returned to Daggerford late in the evening and informed Duke Pwyll that the High Guards had been slaughtered by the dragon and the Wizards role in the act. The Duke told the party that they must travel to Waterdeep the following day and tell Lord Piergion what they had seen. That night they where approached by Tenison a Pyrokineticist who lived in the town who had heard that they would be traveling to Waterdeep and he asked whether they would be willing to pick up a package he had order from Serpentil Books and Folios and returned to him, they agreed.

The following day the party hired themselves out as guards for a caravan bound for Waterdeep, the journey was mostly uneventful except for a brief encounter with a group of Cyricists who where constructing a shrine near the ruins of the Roosting Griffon Inn. The party kept an eye on them but passed them without incident.

The Session ended with the party arriving in Waterdeep

Session 5
3 foot tall serial killer

Last session ended with the PCs arriving in Waterdeep bearing the news of the destruction of the High Guard company at the claws of a Black Dragon

The party went to see the Waterdeeps open lords and told him what had happaned, he thanked them for delivering the message and informed them that if they where seeking work they should contact the watch.

As the party left the palace they saw a cart led by a pair of horses and driven by a man dressed in uniform of the guard, the cart had a large cage built into it containing a shifty looking Halfling. The horses leading the cart where startled when a merchant leading his own cart pulled out in front of them. This resulted in the cart toppling and the halfling escaping down a sewer drain into Waterdeeps sewer system. Despite giving chase the Halfling got away

The party visited the watch and decided to work as body guards for the Thorp family.

This resulted in me running the module Shut-in with the following modifications

Replace Dromdal family with the Thorp noble family

Switch Ceseli with Lady Hulmara Thorp

Switch Lady Araluna Dromadal for either the disowned Khorom Thorp

Ceseli/Lady Hulmara Thorp was a potential love interest for one of the characters

The party completed the module (although they had a hard fight against the Death Dog due the party being split up) and the Knight decided to court Hulmara Thorp. The party leveled up and when the Bard went to the bard college she was aproached by one of the teachers and asked if she would travel to Daggerford and try and persuade the Bards mentor to come teach at the college in Waterdeep, the party agreed and before setting off for Daggerford they retrieved Tenisions book from Serpentil Books and Folios and headed off

This concluded the session
