I recently re-read The Night Parade, the 4th installment in the Harpers series. I had never heard of these specific extradimensional, child abducting monsters anywhere else, or if they struck in any cities other than Calimport. Is there any reference to them in a sourcebook, or did Ciencin make them up solely for this story?

Good question. I checked the Realms wiki but the Night Parade page did not cite any references.

I'm pretty sure the Night Parade critters were dreamed up for that novel. I'm not familiar with any other references to them in Realms fiction -- of course, most Realms fiction has been set elsewhere.

Though I do seem to recall a Realms of story that followed up with Myrmeen and Krystin, sometime later... I could be mistaken on that, though, I've only read one of those books in the last several years, and it was Elaine's.

Some of the characters have been mentioned elsewhere, though, mostly in stuff like Heroes' Lorebook. I think one of the southern books, perhaps Empires of the Shining Sea, also contained a reference or two to the Night Parade.

The Night Parade is 100% canon. They have entries in the Heroes' Lorebook; Villains Lorebook, Cloak and Dagger; a Dungeon adventure and several other, more minor sources.

These sources establish that they are also active in Athkatla; Iriaebor; Keltar; Myratma; Nimpeth; Sheirtalar; Teshburl; Westgate; Urmlaspyr AND they are still active in Calimport, despite the violence against them. The adventure describes how they try to expand north into Cormyr - the PC's job being to foil them.

Wooly is right that there is absolutely no mention of them BEFORE the novel however.

When life turns it's back on you...sneak attack for extra damage.

I thought Cloak and Dagger had the biggest write up on them.

I forgot about the Cloak & Dagger entry.

A few years after the Night Parade novel came out, I lost all interest in that group, since they seemed to be localized to one area and didn't pop up again -- and other, better novels pushed them out of my mind. This is not a bash on the novel; I just think other novels have been a lot better.

Besides, there are so many other evil groups that are so much more fun!

Is it ok if I display my ignorance and ask what is Cloak and Dagger? Some kind of Dragon magazine regular feature perhaps? When I hear that phrase the only thing that comes to mind is the Marvel comic with the guy that can teleport around and the woman who makes "knives" out of solidified light.

The last 2E Realms supplement, and one of the best Realms supplements from any edition.

For a slightly better blurb... Cloak & Dagger

From Champions of Ruin p142: This order of fanatics believes that Dendar the Night Serpent is the mother of the Night Parade, a congregation of demons that oversaw a reign of terror in Calimport in 1359 DR and, The people of Calimport believe that she is the mother of the Night Parade, although this is not true.

I love the night parade as urban villains and would advice anyone that could get a hold on it to read the Dungeon adventure, its one of the better ones. its called Storm Season and appeared in number 61.

No Canon, more stories, more Realms.

Yup Cloak & Dagger, one of the best Realms books ever...

"These things also I have observed: that knowledge of our world is
to be nurtured like a precious flower, for it is the most precious
thing we have. Wherefore guard the word written and heed
words unwritten and set them down ere they fade . . . Learn
then, well, the arts of reading, writing, and listening true, and they
will lead you to the greatest art of all: understanding."
