I'm trying not to read into the decision to go with the prior Lords... But I'm certainly happy to see them going with the Lords I know, from the Waterdeep I know and love. I will certainly enjoy this game more with them as the Lords.

Well, obviously they made a business decision, and having all 'the numbers' in front of them (something we don't have), they chose to go with the older lore in the game, which means that they felt that would appeal to the broadest audience (because thats what businesses do).

Which is great. I hope they apply this same logic moving forward into 5e.

I agree. It's not much different than Star Wars, in that if you place things during the most popular period of the trilogy, you'll get more people invested.

Now that I've had a chance to look over the rulebook...

I like the general set-up. And I especially like the use of the alternate Silverstars term as well.

New Olamn is listed among the buildings. Cool.

Ok, I've been through the rules in details, and here's my initial thoughts. This is coming from a BIG fan of this kind of game, I play every week, I own many and I've played about 25 different games.

1- If you remove any FR element from the game, it could very much still be in my top 5 of all time. That is good.

2- The game will be faster than its German and French cousins, as you are limited to 2 actions every round for the first half of the game, after which you gain an extra agent. The game also limit the number of rounds to 8. Games like Caylus allows up to 6 actions per round, and up to 20 rounds can be played. I don't like this, 2 actions is very cruel considering the possibilities. Agricola does the same, and I don't like it as much as my friends for this very reasons.

3- Every focus seems equally powerful; Strategy based on heavy construction, intrigue cards or quest completion seems to to be viable enough. These plot quest seems insanely powerful though (1 gives an extra agent!!).

That's about it, if the game is balanced, it is going to be great. It is already bought, just waiting for the delivery!

I've played it (finally) and yes, it's as awesome as people are saying.

They went with the "3.5 era" Lords I think because those are the most iconic, recognizable Lords of Waterdeep. Basically, you'd have to be crazy not to have Khelben, Mirt, and Kyriani there, so it was just logical that they go with the other 3.5 era ones. I actually would have liked to see more Lords from various different eras--the Masked Lady Lhestyn would have been neat, for instance, and I think Halaster would have been pretty rock. Ah well--there's always expansion sets.

Halaster and Laeral as extra "lords" (okay even if they aren't..bah) would be amazing for an expansion set. Definitely getting this.

I'm going to have to buy this game (at least 3 copies, methinks) and get to work on my unofficial "The Truth as Khelben Wishes You to See It" rules supplement for it....but alas, I won't be in time for Rodney's birthday--which is today.

I'm going to have to buy this game (at least 3 copies, methinks) and get to work on my unofficial "The Truth as Khelben Wishes You to See It" rules supplement for it....but alas, I won't be in time for Rodney's birthday--which is today.
I really like the idea of both Khelben's supporters and detractors finding themselves all dealing with endless plot-within-plots... even decades after he's gone. Peeling back layers upon layers of secrets as they all continually find themselves mired in thickening intrigues and endless contingencies for plans and scenarios that only the mind of the Blackstaff could ever have conceived.

I just remembered that the game is released tomorrow! I managed to forget about it for the last few weeks, so the wait wasn't as bad as I expected. Now, let's hope the delivery will be fast.

I'm getting mine tuesday. I read the rules twice this week, I'm ready to play as soon the box is opened!

Those mandatory quests look awfully good against strong players... I have the feeling I'll be eating a few of those in the first few games.

So I received it, I played it, and I liked it.

Liked it, not loved. It is a good game, and I wish it success, expansions and follow-ups, and more importantly, I wish it will make people discover the european gameboard genre.

I think it is a Caylus-light. Half the time, half the choices, half the strategy, half the headaches and maybe half the fun. Let's face it, luck is a major factor in this game, as there are 3 decks of cards that will randomly favor the next in line. The 3 games I've played were won by the player who received 2 quests that were given bonus points by his hidden lord. It is possible to become great at this game, and defy all odds when luck is against you, but no matter how good you are, if Beshaba kissed you, you're getting nowhere.

Kinda like d&d now that I think about it...

Good stuff anyway, almost everybody liked it, and everyone here should really check it out, especially if you are not familiar with the genre.

I played about 20 games now, mostly with 3 players but a few 4-player games as well. People have been oddly mute about this topic since the game came out, and I was wondering how you guys are liking it so far.

For my part, I'm still liking it very much, maybe more so than after only a couple of games. I find that reducing the starting quest to 1 instead of 2 is an improvement over the written rules.

I briefly visited the WotC forums today, and someone there mentioned that this game was originally designed to be part of the Darksun setting. Has anyone else heard this? Is it true?

Not that it makes ay difference to me, and I think its kinda cool they chose to focus on FR from now on, but its still a little weird.

I find that unlikely. You don't tie something into a particular setting that well and then casually rebrand it for something else.

They may have only developed the mechanics (back when they were releasing 4eDS products), and then switched gears before the fluff was written in.

If that the case, it would appear to me more like someone (on-high) is limiting the amount of RPG-related products WotC may put out, and when they decided to go full-bore FR, they re-focused several of their projected projects (like this one).

Pure conjecture, of course. I am basing this on the fact that if they had unlimited resources to release products, then why not use one set of rules and do both? There are dozens of variants of monopoly, at least 10 setting-specific versions of Risk, of Clue, etc... game companies have gone that route before.

On the other hand, if this was designed when they were releasing DS products, and that tapered-off, then re-focusing this product on the Realms (which they intend to promote heavily from now on) makes perfect sense.

I find that unlikely. You don't tie something into a particular setting that well and then casually rebrand it for something else.

Strangely enough, I'd heard -- on the EN WORLD boards -- that the game was originally something Wizards' planned as a resurgence for the GREYHAWK setting.

I didn't put much stock in the rumours, really, because the so-called "whistle-blower" didn't provide any actual evidence beyond many quotes of "I reckon" and "I suspect."

Well, thats why I asked HERE. I figured if anyone new the truth, one of the 'official types' would.

It was just something someone mentioned in-passing in a post, so it may just be the same (garbled) bad info Sage read.

And of course, this has no bearing on a perfectly good game either way - I was just curious if that person was talking out their butt.

I wasn't in any way involved in the "officialism" of the game, so my own perspectives here are just my opinion... but based on what I've read from the designers in the few "Design and Development" articles released via the DDI to compliment the release of the Lords of Waterdeep board game, I'm confident enough to say that I feel Wizards' always fully intended for this to be a FORGOTTEN REALMS product, right from the earliest stages of planning through to the end point of publication and distribution.

The game was originally going to have a Dark Sun theme. Later it was changed to Waterdeep.

How far into the development of the game was this changed? As in, was it a somewhat finished Dark Sun product that got revamped, or was it a case of "Hey, let's do a Dark Sun game!" then "No, we're going to set it in the Realms!"?
