Oh, good call on that one.

Yup! That he does! I've dubbed him the Yodagnome. (Though he's actually the mischievous Avatar of my realm's version of Erevan Illesere(sp?)....)

I took lots of names from Final Fantasy characters
like Garland from FF1, and Ragnar from Dragon Warrior
4.
I have to play Chrono Cross/ Chronotrigger to see what those games
were about.

Oh, and I based a Mercenary Captain off of Robert E Lee,

Ooh, I LOVE the FF games!! I've used them for a bit of inspiration, as well. I have a desert race in my HB world similar to the cactaurs. They're a desert relative of the myconids and campestri. I also used some Blade lore to create my own Daywalker vampire- but with a One Ring-type of artifact called (big surprise) the Ring of the Daywalker. Hmm, now I need to go find Fellfire's vampire scroll and suggest it.

Oh, very much so. Sakaar has a very particular Conan-esque vibe to it. Only with plenty of steampunk elements too!

I like the Marvel 1604 universe for inspiration, too, now that you mention comics. Their takes on Spidey, the Hulkm and the FF are just amazing. The Noir alternate time-line is pretty cool, too.

Oooh! I'm inclined to agree. I'm particularly intrigued by the possibility of formulating d20 Modern rules for an X-Men: Noir-styled campaign.

Anyone here ever see the 2003 movie The Hunted starring Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio del Toro? Working on a shadar-kai rogue based largely off the action in that movie.

Is it wrong that my main deific meddler looks like Dungeon Master from the old cartoon and talks like Yoda? I also had a player who had a shadow-demon minion like Venger's. Funny thing was, it had the same name as my god of death, so the PC accidentally summoned him once when calling on her minion. Oops! He was NOT pleased to be called from his realm. Especially on the steps of a temple to the king of the gods. (She had just finished looting the alms box...) Seriously thinking of having him use a little black notebook.....

Talking about the Night Angel Trilogy (a great series IMO) my one friend completly re-built his Assassin character (using 4E stats) that was practically based off of those books. I was quite suprised of he close he came to resembling that style of Assassination (using Talent or 4E Powers) along side poisons and other "tricks".

I think the best part about taking inspiration from other sources is then adding that next step in making it yours. I once wanted to play a really mean, bad-a$$ barbarian and I used heavy Conan-esque references espically the books of Robert Jordan. But after I had all the stats and mechanics played out, he took on a whole different backround and role-play style of being completly insane. Adding to that was a constant thirst for alcohol and severe paranoia and deminsia due to a prolonged Possession of an evil spirit. It was a great character.

One of my players was playing a paladin and had some very near misses with regard to his code and was regarded as somewhat of a renegade by his peers so when he took Leadership feat, the church off loaded a bunch of rejects and outcasts on him. I based some of the core NPCs he had attracted and his cohort on the dirty dozen. Each has glaringly obvious faults but also well hidden positive traits.

Hmm, I saw stats for several FF creatures and characters once, it might have been in Polyhedron or Dragon. Or wizard, maybe. Can't remember. IIRC, Cloud's and Sephiroth's swords were both there, and several other fun bits. I'd love to make a ninja based on Yuffie!

I wonder how many other groups have ever faced against a (surprisingly dangerous) gelatinous icosahedron?
(Caused by desperate dimension mage + monster summoning + wild surge)

A random mathematical incident which led a bizarre hyperspecialization in advanced geometry, a central defining trait for this particular character (recurring NPC, later promoted to henchman, then full PC) and all the spells devised under her name.

After a couple Dragon Age 2 playthroughs, I've decided I'm going to be designing and incorporating a deity who's faith is based on the subjegation of arcane magic users. Going to be putting him/her alongside an idea I had/stole a while back about twin magic goddesses, one being a goddess of arcane supremacy and the other being a goddess of pure wild magic.

I use to take inspiration from everywhere, even from characters that I have seen in novels or games, all my wizards end up looking like Raistlin or Edwin Odesseiron , but from cinema I once made a priest based in Liam Neeson's character in Gangs of New York, but now I'm using a completely original charactyer in nwn2, a halfling wizard-Arcane Scholar of Candlekeep, and find him the most appealing character I ever made Guess in fact you never know from where the inspiration comes. Even once I made a character based in that awful Christopher Lambert's Beowulf

I was actually thinking of trying to do a Marvel-themed adventuring party using 4E mechanics and remaking the Avengers.

Captain America= Human Fighter/Warlord (shield-based powers)
Thor= Deva Avenger/multi-class Cleric
Hulk= Goliath Barbarian|Fighter hybrid (brawler style)
Hawkeye= Human Seeker or Human Ranger (bow-style). I like the Seeker more because it has Controller-ish powers that affect the terrain rather than just straight damage.

Hmmm...I'm liking the sound of this

I had thought about Iron Man but i just don't know how to work it using 4E. Do I make him a Warforged? Do I make him a guy in a built up suit of armor? What Power Source do I use?

I guess If I were to make him up he'd be a Warforged Sorcerer/multi-class paladin (cus of Charisma synergy, some defender-ish abilities and ranged blast spells). Of course, this isn't supposed to be an exact replication, but it's the best I can do.

So you're going classic Avengers, huh? I've done Spidey, Wolvie, and Human Torch all using 3.x rules, and had plans for Storm, Deadpool, and Nightcrawler. DC characters would be funt to tinker with, too- especially Batman and Supes. He would of course be difficult to pull off, though.

Admittedly 3.5 is a much easier system to re-create playable super heroes as the multi-class system is so versatile. However, 4E would be easy to create them as per the monster building rules. So I guess its up to their role. How'd Spidey work out Alysstra?

I suppose that depends on which version of the Avengers we're talking about, and which Iron Man.

Classic Iron Man, I suppose, would just be an genius-level human with no particular physical strengths, strapped into a specialised suit of armour -- perhaps enchanted with certain abilities that mimic Iron Man's patented repulsors and/or chest-beam technology. The ability to float/fly, is also a must.

...

Oooh! Take a different tack, and borrow from his Silver Centurion armour which, along with the aspects I mentioned above, also had cloaking/chameleon abilities. Which, I would think, would translate as invisibility and/or polymorph self magicks in D&D.

LOL!! He's great! I built him as a human wiz/monk/enlightened fist, and used energy substitution of sonic energy instead of fire or electric for the enlightened fist abilities (for that comic-book feel, lol!). He's so much fun to play! I even use the "Parker Luck" in the form of a couple of flaws, and gave him some feats to simulate his Spider-sense and fighting abilities, and magical bracers for the webs. Spells I used included Spider-climb (of course), Web, and some buffs (Bull's Str, Cat's Grace, Expd Retr, Haste, Jump, etc). And I also used some skills to play up his nerd qualities- craft alchemy, craft engineering, and most of the knowledges, along with heavy ranks in balance, tumble, and climb for the physical powers.

That's so cool, Alystra.

Hmmmm. I wonder... How would you handle the Venom symbiote in D&D terms?

I'm thinking maybe something like the daelkyr symbionts from EBERRON. An extension of the living breastplate -- that encompasses the entire body -- would be perfect, because the descriptions for the various symbionts describe them as complete creatures that seek unity with flesh-and-blood mortals. Much like the Venom symbiote.

Venom seems more like an evil sentient curse than a symbiote to me (in D&D terms, that is). Possessing and transforming the host in a fashion similar to vampirism, though with a different mechanism. Tyranthraxus seems Venom-like in this regard.

I've always wanted to use the Living Steel monster, possibly as a familiar. Similar to Warblade from the Wildcats. I particularly enjoyed the storyline where they went back to Khera and he met up with the Shapers Guild.
