Well, this is a bit of different news than the usual layoffs being reported:

RPG Editor

I know that I'm unable to make the move for the job, but if there's anyone else out there willing to, or already in the area...

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Hmm. Did someone on staff resign?

Shemeska the Marauder, King of the Crosstrade; voted #1 best Arcanaloth in Sigil two hundred years running by the people who know what's best for them; chant broker; prospective Sigil council member next election; and official travel agent for Chamada Holiday specials LLC.

Seeing a job listing is better than seeing a layoff notice.

Well I do not qualify, though it would be nice to see them get an Editor that does better then some examples in the past.

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."
"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."

Except that one of the staff they layed off used to be an RPG editor.

Makes you wonder what they are thinking when things like this occur?

Layoffs are often code for "We are letting you go, but not firing you so you don't have a mark on your employment history."

I've seen many corps "lay off" tons of people, and then hire the same number of people back over a period of time. It allows for restructuring and trimming the salary percentage of your gross.

The Old Grey Box and AD&D for me!

We don't have enough info to assume that it was a bad business decision on WotC's part. I enjoy bashing WotC as much as the next person, but I don't know the details of who was let go, or why. For all we know, there may have been sound reasoning behind who was let go... I'm no fan of WotC, but I'm not going to assume the worst with everything they do.

WotC uses the lay-offs as a way of hiring fresh staff on lower salaries.

(Remember that US employment law and practice is very different to what you're used to in Australia.)

That's actually something that a lot of companies do.

And we still don't have any evidence that that was what WotC was doing in this case.

Not that different in this regard, as I've known some Australian-based companies who've employed similar measures.

It is also a good way to hire back many of the same workers and resetting their benefits packages to whatever the current starting point is.(which is 99.99% of the time lower than before) It is a quick way to slash big bucks and still maintain decent personel.

One way to look at this practice is in terms of the unsustainably rising US incomes that have priced the country out of being able to economically manufacture many goods (moving those industries to poorer countries with less environmental protection, massive protectionism, and other consequences).
