Hey guys,

I'm back after a long time of being to tired to care about forums and stuff, i plan on being back but as a lesser player.

I have a few questions though:

At my site would it be ok to post info about races, dieties and other info straight from the player handbooks? We are not makeing money off of the site and it is strictly for role playing use. Is this a nono or is it ok?

I'd say if it's in the System Reference Document then it's a nonissue. If the info isn't in that source then you are better off asking WOTC.

Course, I'm not a lawyer.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I'd have to agree with Kuje. I've had some experience with copyright-related issues recently, specifically dealing with RPG content. And as far as I know . . . if it's not open source material, then you legally don't have the authority to re-produce this content anywhere online.

Though, I also am not a lawyer. You could try Krash, however I'm not sure this type of legality question would fall into the category of the law he practices. Failing that, I'd probably ask WOTC too.

This question is hard to answer

Fist
He law about copyright isn’t the same in all countries.

Second
It depends on how much information you put on yore site

Third
There is a big difference between putting D20 system info on the site and forgotten realms information on the site. The D 20 is half open game system as I understand

It’s hard to give a specific answer

If you had said The Players Handbook then to my knowledge that is the core rulebook for the D20 system. I guess in the first instance the best thing to do would be to check the OGL information either in the source book or via the WotC website.

It is always a good idea to say what your source is as well.

If it is information in the Player's Handbook, just reference directly to the subject matter.

If it is information in any of the FR sourcebooks then you can't have any information verbatim.

Technically, anything which is Open Game Content (OGC) can be re-posted. Note that the actual text of the PHB, DMG, and MM is not OGC, though the information is, through the System Reference Document. Wenin's link above is to a nice online copy, which has the legalities already taken care of. Technically, you also have to post the open game license any time you use OGC.

OTOH, WotC doesn't seem to come down on fan sites that don't use the OGL properly or have information on their intellectual property. So, as long as you're not posting large chunks of their books, you're probably ok in practice.
