So i'm running Siege of Dragonspear for my players and I wanted to expand on the first layer of hell more than the game does. Does anyone know if during 2e anything of relevance was happening in Avernus and if Bel or Tiamat was ruling it at the time?

Thanks in advance for any answer

Bel has been Lord of the First since his debut.

So already after 1368 DR Bel has already supplanted Zariel? I ask because in descent into avernus it says that before her rule she was imprisoned and Asmodeus granted him the title of lord of the first until he gave it back to Zariel

A fairly comprehensive summary of how the layer evolved across editions:

https://dungeonsdragons.fandom.com/wiki/Avernus

Although I recall the oldest AD&D lore originally appointing Tiamat as the keeper of the plane, in practice if not in name.

Bel has ruled since after the Reckoning, since the support of the Dark Eight helped him out. Faces of Evil establishes that Zariel was overthrown several millennia ago. Given that it's unlikely for Bel to have gained and lost his seat within a few decades, I'd say that any source that has Zariel ruling at any time after Netheril or even farther back to be a blatant retcon

The timing of Avernus leadership has been further muddled with each edition and between generic D&D and Realms lore, which often for the planes is the same but not always. The wiki entry Ayrik points to does about as good a job as possible of sorting it out with established lore. I would add one note that time does not necessarily pass in a linear way or at the same pace outside of the Prime (a McGuffin, yes, but one that is well established in Realmslore.)

Yeah I think the wiki page on the planescape torment game timeline does mention time works differently compared to the material planes. I think ill'go with Bel as ruler of Avernus as to create a continuity when my players play descent into Avernus. Ill' probably use the pdf "Encounters in Avernus" of DMs guild to create something else to do in the same zones you explore in that module though
