Complete Warrior and Oriental Adventures give us similar takes on this class. Is there a way to advance the bear-shape taken the way that a ranger or druid's animal companions can be? Monster specific Feats (Natural Weapon Focus...) especially, Templates maybe (giant)

The classes already increase the type of bear you can be. As for making it better, sure I guess you could grab feats like Awesome Blow or Improved Natural Attack or Improved Natural Armor. The problem is, these feats only become available when you're in bear form, which only happens X/day.

Now there are feats that are good regardless that I would take. Like Knock-Down (deal 10 damage to a target, free Trip attempt; requires Improved Trip), Power Attack, Improved Bull Rush, Shock Trooper, etc. And these will ultimately make playing a Bear Warrior better in terms of combat. Also Extended Rage helps to make your form last longer too.
