Hello all! As I mentioned on Auld Dragon's 2e thread on the monstrous deities of the Realms, I, too, have been working on something similar. While collecting and creating info on monstrous deities for my new campaign, I sort of just carried things out to the logical conclusion and gathered everything I could on the subject. Originally in a nice, neat chart form after the style from Faiths & Pantheons - which unfortunately wasn't able to translate here very well - I've since redone the information as a list. While technically in 3.0/3.5e form, all the information here outside domains should be useful in any edition campaign.
I've perused as many sources as I could find (mostly the 2e and 3e products in my possession) and sifted out what I could for this list. Most of the information here can be found in canon D&D products; only those marked with (*) are my own additions; mostly 3e domains, some favored weapons (although most of these were obvious choices from various sources), but with a few other things here and there). The vast majority of this comes from just a few products: Monster Mythology (2e), Faiths & Pantheons, Serpent Kingdoms, The Complete Divine, Draconomicon (both 2e and 3e), the two Fiendish Codex sourcebooks, and, probably most curiously, the Living Greyhawk Official Listing of Deities (a PDF from the WotC website - which actually details quite a few monstrous deities not covered elsewhere). Beyond that, there are a large number of other sources I've used, which I'll detail in the individual sections, along with any additional commentary.
I do have to admit I have been a bit arbitrary with domains. I only used domains from the Player's Handbook and the Player's Guide to Faerun (which had the latest version of the additional setting domains) for the vast majority of the deities listed. I also used the domains from the Draconomicon for the dragon deities and the domains from the two Fiendish Codex sourcebooks for the archdevils and demon princes. I avoided domains from other sourcebooks simply because it would be unfair to allow access to new domains for the monstrous deities without retroactively allowing them for the human/demihuman deities (which could be done, but would be an awful amount of work). The dragon deities and the archfiends, however, are so unique that their domains wouldn't really even fit with the already detailed deities - Tiamat being the obvious exception of course, and hence her appearance in these lists.
Although technically they aren't monstrous deities per se, the list will also contain the various archdevils and demon princes worshiped by mainly human cultists, for completion's sake.
As the list is very long, I'm going to break it down into more manageable sections, with commentary for each section to be edited in the next day or so.

Commentary: The dragon and giant deities were probably the two easiest groups to research; most of the dragon deities are fully fleshed out in the 3e Draconomicon and Faiths & Avatars, while most of the giant deities appear in Faiths & Avatars and/or the Complete Divine. The only major domain changes I made from those sources were to substitute the Dragon domain for the Scalykind domain for the dragon deities (thus confining Scalykind to the reptilian humanoid races). Also, there are a sprinkling of Realms domains here and there where they seemed reasonable to add (this will be the case for all sections).
The dragon deity names are given in both forms, with the Realms version generally first, with the exception of Bahamut, who is now probably more likely known by that name in the Realms than his previous moniker of Xymor. Aasterinian is seen as merely an aspect of Hlal (which was the case before the 3e Draconomicon inexplicably separated the two), while Null is presented in both his Chronepsis and Falazure aspects.
Sardior was not included in Draconomicon; however he was detailed in a WotC web enhancement for the book. I adjusted his stats there by just adding a couple of domains, including, obviously, Mentalism. Kereska and Zorquan were not detailed in that sourcebook either; unlike Sardior I had to create their weapons and domains myself using the old 2e Draconomicon and Cult of the Dragon sourcebooks as my guides. Zorquan especially is a difficult deity; "dragon-ness" isn't an easily definable quality, and tends to blur him with Asgorath/Io. As a result, I focused more on the power and pride of dragons as his sphere of influence.
As for the giant deities, the vast majority of them were well-established in both Faiths & Pantheons and Complete Divine, and thus are presented here pretty much unchanged. Kostchtchie is from Frostburn and Fiendish Codex I, but having substituted the Winter domain from Frostburn with the Realms Cold domain. Karontor is the first deity I lifted from the Living Greyhawk official deity list PDF; like a lot of gods from that source I stripped some unnecessary Complete Divine domains (and in some cases - though not this one - substituted Realms domains). Diancastra and Grond Peaksmasher were not detailed in any 3e product, so I used information from Monster Mythology for the former and from the novels (and sources pointed out by Auld Dragon and others!) for the latter. |

The Dark God is probably not worshiped in the Realms (and either way is imprisoned and can't grant spells above 2nd level), and Juiblex is certainly not (Ghaunadar answers prayers made in his name). Diinkarazan is also imprisoned, but has no priests anyway. Stillsong also has no priests, as "he" is transitioning into something else.
I also noticed some alignment oddities; I guess there were more changes in that regard than I thought post-2e.

The Dark God is probably not worshiped in the Realms (and either way is imprisoned and can't grant spells above 2nd level), and Juiblex is certainly not (Ghaunadar answers prayers made in his name). Yep, some creature alignments got shifted around a bit from 2e to 3e, and the deities got moved along as well. The only alignment change I personally made was for Balador, as werebears are LG in 3e, and thus unless he got moved to NG at the least, he would be deprived of his most important worshipers. As Balador wasn't detailed anywhere in a 3e product I could find, I felt the change was a reasonable one to make.
The deities you mentioned were among those I questioned myself (and I outright rejected the Elder Elemental God, as Ghaunadaur definitely takes his place in the Realms). I could definitely see the Dark God as being just an aspect of Ghaunadaur as well. I'm somewhat less convinced of Juiblex, however, since it does seem a bit unfair that pretty much every other Demon Prince worth the title has his sticky fingers in the Realms pie, while he's excluded. Perhaps Ghuandaur did fully convert all of the demon prince's followers, and "Juiblex" is now just an aspect of Ghuanadaur in the Realms; or perhaps now Juiblex is making a comeback on his own with a new sect of worshipers. Or maybe they've always been separate - the confusion arose simply due to understandable misinterpretations during conversations between humans and oozes.
Stillsong is just weird (but that's hardly news). As so little is known about the entity, perhaps he does grant spells, but only a few know it; or maybe he doesn't, and the domains listed would be the ones granted were he to do so.
As for Diinkarazan, I believe that even in his imprisoned state he still manages to connect to a very few select (and very insane!) worshipers (he is still a deity, after all). Not enough to form an organized religion to be sure (resulting, as noted, in no standardized holy symbol), but a few here and there that harass and subvert the other derro in the times between his avatar manifestations. |
