So, I got this idea in my head that it might be fun to create the heraldic crests of the nobility of some of the houses of Waterdeep last weekend and make them a lot bigger than they were presented in the original FR1 Waterdeep and the North. My intention was to then later shrink them and play with a printer to make decals for minis. I started with the Helmfast crest and I downloaded a couple different graphics programs that were free and got nowhere (I'm NOT normally given to artwork mind you). So, I'm very used to Visio from work, but I only happen to have a local copy of visio 2002.. and I'm not going to pay money for this project.
Anyway, surprisingly, with Visio I was able to much more easily make the drawing which I'd fought to do with other paint programs.... but it was only in black and white. There didn't seem to be a paint bucket like paint had, so I saved as a JPEG and copied it over... which lost the vector graphics nature of he drawing and made it shades of Gray. So, when I did a paint bucket dump, it was frankly a pain in the butt. Its been forever since I researched all the old graphic types. I know I'm probably reaching here, but is there a vector graphic type that might enable what I'm looking to do?

nevermind, figured it out, saving as a bi-level tif file seems to do the trick... this is actually kind of fun. |

I'll have to take a look at that. So far tonight I've recreated the crests for Agundar, Hawkwinter, Helmfast, Ilzimmer, Roaringhorn, Ruldegost, and Wands. They're far from fancy, but they definitely look like something usable. Hell, you could even print them on handouts for players and such as the special seal of X noble family. I'm keeping the original uncolored in visio, then I'm making a TIF which I then color and save as a JPEG. I'm trying to hit the family names that either have a really easy drawing OR that I know people use first. I know Amcathra and Thann were already created in City of Splendors, so I may just do Thunderstaff, Kormallis, Irlingstar and Cassalanter next. I know I'll never do them all, but after those, I may do the really easy ones (Ilitul for instance.. 3 identical red spears on an orange background.. should be easy... ugly, but easy). |

Well, I finished 21 of the crests. I made the original black and white vector graphic in visio 2002 (and saved in .vsd format so that I can edit the parts), then I saved it as a tif file with 256 colors, opened it in paint and just used the paint bucket to color them mostly (occasionally had to use the paintbrush). Some of them are butt ugly (I'm not the best at choosing what exactly is "crimson" or "deep green", etc....), but they pretty much match the descriptions from Waterdeep and the North.... and when they're reduced to decal for a miniature size, they should be wonderful. For use on handouts to players, its probably impressive enough. I wouldn't consider it "professional quality" like the maps I see from Markustay, etc... Some of it I pulled from clip art on the web. Anyway, below are the links, hopefully they work.

Thanks George. BTW, I think I have it in me to do 3 or 4 more, but I'd prefer to focus on any "prominent" Waterdeep noble families that I may have missed (or possibly heraldry from outside Waterdeep if its a known design). If anyone's got a particular fancy that strikes them, just let me know... and if it doesn't look too hard, I'll try my hand at it. |
