Inspired by an earlier post about how Christina Hendricks portrayed Sune in my Realms campaign (because duh), I've been thinking about other actors for other gods.

Thoughts?

*Blink* It might help if you pointed to what Christina Hendricks portrayed.

I see Rose Leslie as Sune (red head from game of thrones) or Angie Everheart in her prime (Bordello of Blood).

Bane the dude who played Bane in the latest batman movie.

Asmodeaus Tom Cruise

For Sharess Manizha Faraday (Russian Model) or if too light skinned Priya Rai (She an East Indian Adult film star, which actually makes sense if one remembers that the Mulan inbred with the Imaskar which are a Durpri people and those of Durpri resemble East Indians. Zandilar form Jenna Haze.

Llirra Jesse Jane.

Tempus, James Earl Jones, based on voice.

Malar, a hairier verison of the end monster from the second Canon movie, the one with the horn.

Lanthander the dude who played Awesome in the tv show chuck.

Mystria Courtney Cox.

Waukeen Sharon Stone.

Besheba Porche (from arrested development)

Glaysa- Elizabeth Hurly she made a great devils.

Talos Jack Hughmen with a beard (wolverine)

That's a bit tangential, as my question wasn't "what do you think of my inspiration," but rather "who would you cast as the various gods of the Realms?"

But since you asked: Christina Hendricks on imdb

Also, the main character from Firefly/Serenity (sorry I'm really bad with actor names) made evil look EASY in a few episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I could see him portraying Cyric.

I agree Bane (from Batman) could portray Bane (his dialogue from the movie was impressive).

The guy who plays Thor could pull off Tempus methinks (as could Vin Diesel now that I think about it).

Liam Neeson could pull off any number of deities (I see him as either Talos or Silvanus). His counterpart (Hades) in the Titans movies could likewise play a number of them (not sure which role he would be best suited for).

Hugh Jackman or Gerard Butler could pass as 'woodsy' deities (Shaundakul, Malar, or even Valkur).

Michael Gambon as Azuth (he is spry compared to Ian McKellen IMHO).

Christopher Lee as Oghma (the baritone voice lends itself well for oratory).

I have a dream that one day, all game worlds will exist as one.

I would definately not go with Christina Hendricks as Sune. Don't get me wrong, she's pretty, but I'd go else where.

Acting if Acting ability is concidered I'd go with Anna Silk aka Bo off of Lost Girl as Sharess, but retained Jenna Haze as her Elf side.

Anthony Hopkins (as Marvel's Odin) as Tyr.

Cause one pseudo-Norse god is as good as another similarly themed pseudo-Norse god.

No to Tom Hiddleston/Loki as Cyric. That's the vibe Wizards went for and failed miserably to achieve. Cyric needs someone less likeable, more creepy, and who can play as someone even more full of himself than Loki. Perhaps a comedic actor who can shift to bouts of seriousness as needed, like Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, or Ben Stiller.

Morgan Freeman for a deity, just because he plays god in every movie, or otherwise subs in his godly narration. Maybe he's Ao.

Thing is the Faerunian deities, for the most part, have always seemed only vague figures to me. There's not really a face for them. Or much of a personality for that matter. Why I think the meta-plot/novels gets into trouble overusing them as NPC type characters. The Avatar series fares a bit better because they were mortals first, but then we get into very mortal deities (as opposed to deities with mortal traits).

They're shells of characters really, vessels for their ideologies. They appear as the most archetypal form of those they represent (plus some iconography), Azuth as generic wizard, Malar as a beast monster, generic beautiful women for the various goddesses of beauty/love/lust and such, Bane/Helm/Tyr/Tempus as generic armored warrior, etc.

I've read they sometimes appear in other forms, so I think the voice matters more for some instances.

My question is mostly about "if/when the gods do appear, how do you picture them?"

I'm also a fan of the concept that certain gods look different to each and every person that looks upon them. Sune, for instance, looks like every person's ideal of beauty. Corellon's elven sub-race matches that of an elf looking at him, and even the god's apparent gender might vary in a similar way.

Cheers

For me it's more about voice than anything. Appearance is always subject to change with deities, but the voice, that's the most important part of their presence.

Asmodeus: Simon Templeman. Don't know who he is? Look him up.

Gruumsh: Kevin Grevioux.

Sune: Anna Hutchison. Christina Hendrix might have actually been my first choice, but then I saw Ms. Hutchison in Spartacus: War of the Damned and...damn.

Torm: Liam McIntyre.

Tyr: Vladimir Kulich

Cyric: Had to think for a moment on this one. Decided on Ritchie Coster, a character actor some of you might recognize as the cezch mob boss from The Dark Knight. Dude played a serial killer in an episode of Law & Order back in the day, creeped the hell out of me. Though I might give this one a toss up with Peter Stormare(Lucifer from Constantine). Either one of these guys could pull off a mix of crazy, creepy, and scary to do a better job with Cyric than the novels have ever done.

If you're casting Goddesses, Charisma Carpenter must be one of them.

Liv Tyler would be great as one of the Seldarine.

Please, please, please never put Ben Stiller in a Realms movie.

I used a picture of Priya Rai as the image of Sharess on my info page for her (honestly, I had no idea she was a porn actress until you mentioned it but it fits ). I can't really think of anyone else... possibly Zoe Saldana (Neytiri in Avatar) but I'm not sure. Dunno about Jenna Haze for Zandilar, either - maybe Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones) or Halle Berry.

First post was a little misleading Erik, when I first saw it I thought:

"Wow, Erik had Saffron from Firefly in one of his Realms games? I wonder how they met."

I don't think Sune is portrayed as being quite that old and besides I think Charlize Theron would be much better as an evil goddess. She would make a good Shar or maybe Loviatar.

Yeah aside from the overreacting she would be perfect for the role.
Some other suggestions:
Ian McKellan as Azuth.
Raplh Fiennes as Talos.
Joaquin Phoenix as Cyric.
Russell Crowe as Tyr.
Anna Hathaway as Mielikki.
Liv Tyler as Sehanine Moonbow/ Selune.
Michael Fassbender aka evil robot from Prometheus as Kelemvor.
Kate Winslet as Chautea.
Dwayne Johnson aka the Rock as Tempus.
Eric Bana as Torm.( Hector from the movie Troy)

His more prominent role is Magneto. And no, I would not want him to be cast as a god. I would rather that he be one of the Shadovar princes. Lamorak or Melegaunt.

Erik,

In a general response (since I never was all that good at casting, Lol) to your question of "if/when the gods do appear, how do you picture them?" , I'd note that when on the admittedly rare occasion that I've had the gods appear to players over the years I have usually take a somewhat indirect approach with their appearance.

What I mean when I say that is, rather than having them appear before the players in their 'true' form/all their radiant glory I've had them appear to show their favor (or disfavor) through the standard manifestations outlined in the varied 'Powers and Pantheons' style tomes OR (taking a page from Ed) disguised as mortals (in what amounts to avatar form). What better way to judge the honesty, integrity, and character of a potentially important person/recruit/worshipper than to walk next to them as a 'fellow mortal' and see how they behave when the divine spotlight isn't aimed directly at them.

I also have the opinion that mortals (especially at common PC levels) are ill equipped to handle the sight of a revealed deity in all his/her glory. So, even in those instances where the disguised deity has completed their first hand analysis and opted to throw off the illusion of their mortality/reveal their true nature to the PCs, they have still retained an idealized (physically perfect and radiant) version of the mortal shell they chose to cloak themselves in rather than 'A list movie starring' it up and looking like their 'true' self. I think that also avoids having to pin them into one 'casting' and so allows the PCs to retain the sense of awe and wonder regarding what the deity's true face looks like.

When one of my PCs died and her deity appeared to her on the Fugue Plane she still did so cloaked in the form of the long dead mortal (herself a notable past worshipper) she had befriended the PC pretending to be. That was who the deity had come to look like to the player and the sight of that person brought her infinitely more comfort (and a tear to the eye) than if the deity's A List self had come striding toward her through the silver void.

Anyway, just my two cents on all that!

Er, I hate to be the devil’s advocate, but Kate Beckinsale’s roles are (almost) always kickass. When did Mystra ever kick someone’s ass? The last time I checked, she was the one whose ass got kicked.
