I'm going to be running a campaign soon using some kind of online software soon. That way my brother, some high school buddies and some new friends can all be in a game together.

I'd like to be able to post things like letters from their employers, notes on a bulletin board, scraps of parchment found in dungeons, etc. Instead of just posting the text though, I'm hoping to make it look like it's written on parchment or yellowing paper or whatever.

Any ideas for how to get that effect and save it as a document or image file so I can easily send it out to the players?

I dunno if maybe there are automatic online tools, or if someone has ideas for how to do it in a program like GIMP or something.

Thanks!

The best way to do this is make it by hand and scan it. I've done it many times, and it takes far less time (for me) than using a computer to do it.

If you don't have a scanner, another fast way is to simply use the Paint Program that nearly all computers come with. Open the picture of a piece of blank parchment, and then using Paint you can either simply type the words on the paper, or draw what you would like on it. This might seem the best choice to many...but hand-made is best because you can make it look any way you like...if you have artistic talent as good as a cave-man.

The Old Grey Box and AD&D for me!

Yeah I thought about the by hand and scan thing, but for some reason I thought it would come out looking weird.

It would definitely capture the handwriting feel the best though.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to try! Thanks for the tip.

The other option, which I use for my online games, is to use your internet search of choice for "parchment" or "Worn Paper"

Dependent on your image software, you can create a background using that (or an image of worn paper), then add text directly above it in a calligraphy or scripted font (all available for free for non-commercial use).

I have also found quite a few things to use on DeviantArt as well. It's all a matter of the tools at your disposal (I dislike my scanner and have horrid handwriting).

Good luck to you :)
