i know it was a dwarven city, but was it part of a kingdom, or the beginning of a new kingdom, or...?

also, when was it founded and abandoned?

sounds like a fun place to send a dwarf on a mad mission to reclaim, all Bruenor-style.

According to the Grand History of the Realms, Kanaglym was the main city of the Dwarven Duchy of Hunnabar, which, itself, was part of the successive realms of Phalorn, aka The Fallen Kingdom. There are entries under 557 DR (date of the devastation of the Duchy by hobgoblins) and 1255 DR. A 592 DR entry states that the dwarves of Hunnabar were unable to maintain their hold, and migrated north to join the northern dwarven duchy of Dardath (also part of Phalorn). One could therefore presume that Kanaglym was abandoned at that date.

Pretty much.

Going from memory [and, sneakily, what Krash has shared with me in the past], it was an independent dwarven clan holding that was absorbed into Phalorm. When that realm fell apart, so did Kanaglym.

I seem to recall some mention about the majority of survivors ending up in Ammarindar.

Members of this realm also exist in the underdark city of Zanhoriloch in the Deep Wastes. Here's the lore on it:

Underdark Locations
Zanhoriloch (Small City, 6,000): This strange dwarven city rests on an island in the Underdark's Lake Thoroot. Zanhoriloch was originally built by drow, who in the Year of the Last Hunt (722 DR) launched an attack on the western dwarven city of Kanaglym through a portal. The dwarves surprised the drow with the strength of their resistance and forced the dark elves to retreat, following them back through the portal, where the dwarves sacked the unprepared city and turned the lake red with drow blood.

Stranded in an unknown location by the closing portal, the dwarves settled in the city, reworking its architecture to suit them and their faith. Though they were slow to learn boating, the dwarves of Zanhoriloch (usually called Mhorilot, meaning "dark surface," by its inhabitants) are comfortable on the water and keep their city self-sufficient by fishing and kelp farming. They have small mining expeditions on the near shore and possess wealth of silver, gold, and iron. Having spent several centuries avoiding the elves of Cormanthor, the dwarves recently emerged from a small tunnel leading to Battledale, with whom they now trade weapons and precious metals for grain, beef, and wood.

and the source on that bit of lore is Rand's Travelogue, part 10, also preserved here on Candlekeep.

Zanhoriloch shows up on the Drizzt's Guide to the Underdark map, predictably under Cormanthor, but there's apparently no mention of the city in that source.

nice find. this indicates that Kanaglym was still quite strong in 722 DR. it's fair to assume, though, if a large chunk of the fighting forces pursued the drow back through the portal (becoming stranded in Zanhoriloch and being unable to reunite with their kin) then Kanaglym may have been abandoned shortly after that. must have, if any of these dwarves went to Ammarindar, since that kingdom fell in 882.
