Sorry if this is a daft question, but I'm basically a lazy person and I'm gessing that someone here will have the info I want at their fingertips!!
My next reading project (after the Pratchett books) is to read through all my FR game products, starting with the original grey box, but I'd like to do it in chronological order). So has someone got a list for me, or suggestions should they think there is a better order to do it in?
I'm only going to be interested in the gaming stuff and not the novels, though I could, of course, easily weed them out of a list.
I have all but 2 of the mainstreem rpg items in boxes in the loft and I've got all the time in the world so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Post here, PM me or even mail me at c_h_1@hotmail.com.
cheers in advance
Carl

By chronological order, do you mean publishing date in the US, or chronological covering times within the setting?
If you mean publishing date, the first bit is easy: 1e FR books were denoted with an "FR#." FR1 was Waterdeep and the North, and it went up to, IIRC, FR12 The Shining South. That will take you up to the Time of Troubles, more or less. Forgotten Realms Adventures then covers how the ToT changed things.
Adventures are going to make things a bit more complicated, but my feeling is you should read the sourcebooks first, and then double back to any adventures you're interested in. Plus, I'm having a hard time remembering which FR adventures are 1e.
2e is going to be a bit messier, since FR become the default D&D setting, and the number of sourcebooks exploded. I've got some notes on when things were published back at home, I'll see what I can come up with tonight. |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

Ok, here's a rough outline of 2e publication dates, and a more complete one for 3e. I'm ignoring some of the adventures, since I've got to draw the line somewhere. Also, for 2e, all I have are the year. The 3e list came from here (sort by setting): http://www.dndjunkie.com/booklist.aspx
2e 1990 Draconomicon FR 11 Dwarves Deep FR 12 The Horde
1991 Drow of the Underdark Ruins of Undermountain
1992 FR 15 Gold and Glory Menzoberranzan Pirates of the Fallen Stars Volo's Guide to Waterdeep
1993 Code of the Harpers FR 16 The Shining South Forgotten Realms Revised Campaign Setting Player's Guide to the Forgotten Realms Ruins of Myth Drannor Boxed Set The Dalelands Volo's Guide to the North
1994 City of Splendors Cormyr Elminster's Ecologies Elves of Evermeet Marco Volo Adventure Trilogy (A) Ruins of Undermountain II - The Lost Levels Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast
1995 Giantcraft Pages from the Mages Ruins of Zhentil Keep Spellbound Return of Randal Morn Adventure Trilogy (A) The Moonsea The Seven Sisters Volo's Guide to Cormyr
1996 Faiths and Avatars How the Mighty Are Fallen (A) Netheril The North Undermountain: Lost Level, Maddgoth's Castle, Stardock (A) Vilhon Reach Volo's Guide to All Things Magical Volo's Guide to the Dalelands
1997 Four From Cormyr (A) Lands of Intrigue Powers and Pantheons Prayers of the Faithful Villain's Lorebook
1998 Calimport City of Ravens Bluff Cormanthyr Cult of the Dragon Demihuman Deities Empires of the Shining Sea Fall of Myth Drannor (A) For Duty and Deity (A) Hellgate Keep (A)
1999 Drizzt's Guide to the Underdark Sea of Fallen Stars Skullport Wyrmskull Throne
2000 Cloak and Dagger (last 2e Realms book published) Secrets of the Magister
3e Books Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting Jun-01 Magic of Faerun Aug-01 Lords of Darkness Nov-01 Forgotten Realms Dungeon Master's Screen Feb-02 Faiths & Pantheons May-02 Silver Marches Jul-02 Races of Faerun Mar-03 Unapproachable East May-03 Underdark Oct-03 Player's Guide to Faerun Mar-04 Serpent Kingdoms Jul-04 Shining South Oct-04 Lost Empires of Faerun Feb-05 Champions of Ruin May-05 City of Splendors: Waterdeep Jun-05 Champions of Valor Nov-05 Power of Faerun Mar-06 Mysteries of the Moonsea Jun-06 Dragons of Faerun Aug-06 Cormyr: The Tearing of the Weave Mar-07 Shadowdale: The Scouring of the Land Jul-07
Based on this, I think I can say that 1998 was the greatest year ever for Realms products. Anyone else have years they want to nominate? |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

EDIT: Duh. Not the novels. Nevermind. Well, as mentioned, the 1e stuff obviously comes first, then the 2e stuff, and so on...
He does intend to do so though, although he is having to rebuild it from scratch as the reason he didn't originally finish it was due to a hard-drive crash and a loss of the file.
No, I don't know why I am talking about myself in the third person either . |
