Does anybody know of any Orders devoted to slaying vamps or Adventuring Companies that specialize in this business? For some reason something called the Order of Aster comes to mind.

That does sound familiar, but I don't recall the source. You could use the undead-hunter PrC- I forget what it's called. Might have been in Complete Divine.

It's actually the Order of the Aster, and they serve Lathander. Various forms of undead rank among their many enemies. See Faiths & Avatars.

There are also several undead slayer kits in the 2E Complete Handbooks, any of which could "specialize" in anti-vampire warfare.

Well, besides the order of the Aster, there's also the Knights of the Eternal Order, who are devoted to Kelemvor. Granted, they target undead in general, but they more than likely deal with plenty of Vampires.

I created an organization called the Radiant Crusade that specifically dealt with eliminating undead from the face of Faerūn. The organization is for v3.5 rules and takes the mechanics from the Player's Handbook 2 for gaining entry, rising among their ranks, important figures, base of operations, etc...

I'm sure if you Searh Candlekeep and type in Radiant Crusade you'll find it.

Mhoarnathil are an elven order of Sehanine Moonbow devoted to undeadhunting. They are largely solitary hunters who operate by moonlight. Sehanine allows them to dabble in necromancy spells (such as disrupt undead and detect undead), but closely monitors them for corruption and grants limited clerical blessings in return.

Mhaornathil are mentioned passingly in Cormanthyr: Empire of Elves, Elves of Evermeet and some elven dictionaries (Mhaor means Undeadbane). The Mhaornathil PrC is more fully described in the Elves of Fearun Netbook.

EDIT: I found another order of Sehanine that devotes considerable time to hunting undead when consulting my sources. Demihuman Deities mentions the Sentinels of the Moonbow, a group of rangers who protect elves reincarnated into animals and also hunt undead that blight the land.

Another order of interest were sponsored by Jergal, the Companions of the Pallid Mask, but they are extinct since before the Time of Troubles (from 2nd edition Powers and Pantheons). They only hunted unsanctioned or troublesome intelligent undead.

Khelben Blackstaff's Tel Teukiira or Moonstars have thwarted many plots of vampirelords in Waterdeep, and have so ammased alot of expertise in hunting vampires over the years since their formation.

Only in my dreams.

But seriously, I made this point before in some other thread: there is no such thing as 'useless lore' (including non-FR or even non-fantasy). I have found that even in the worst of shows/movies I have been able to walk away with a kernel of an idea.

For instance, I was watching the vomit-worthy Johnny Mnemonic the other night (it was 3AM and I couldn't sleep), and although the movie was gawd-awful (including Keanou Reeves 'acting', or lack-thereof), I thought the idea of a powerful entity/organization having control of a 'cure' and NOT wanting to give it out because they would loose their 'cash-cow' highly intriguing, and I'm trying to figure-out how to apply that to a {dark) fantasy scenario.

So that just proves even garbage is useful (and Buffy isn't garbage... more like cheesy carp, which can be fun to watch).

Ummmm... to undermine my own point... the Twilight Saga actually makes me nauseous. I was angry at my eyes for days after watching the first one.

Perfect. Thanks y'all. The Mhaornathil/Sentinels of the Moonbow seem very reminicient of the Huntress' of Artemis, recently popularized in the Percy Jackson books. I may be able to use that. I will also look into the Companions of the Pallid Mask, Eternal Order and Radiant Crusade. I wish that all the lore regarding the Moonstars had been compiled somewhere. Has anybody taken this on as a pet project? Thanks for the knowledge, Scribes, and the sources.

I think specialty priests of Selūne can wield weapons called moon's hand and moonstar (special types of consecrated mace and morning star, respectively). I'm not sure if this is at all related to the Moonstars in your question, Fellfire. Especially since Selūnites aren't particularly interested in vampires, outside of their standard undead turning powers and their usual mucking around at night where they don't belong.

No, no. The Moonstars, as in Khelben's own personal army, and splinter sect of the Harpers. Also known as the Tel Teukiira, but thank you nonetheless.

The movies, maybe. But definitely not the novels. The entire quartet, [or pentad, if you include the novelette] is awash with romantic [obsessive kind of love] moments, yes. However, there's more to it than that. I particularly like the Volturi. Aro's ability to hold a small yet formidable organization that serves as their race's royalty is astounding. Jane's seemingly detached yet evil [or neutral, depending on how you look at it] disposition appeals to me as well.

Every beginning has an end.

Actually, Larloch IS batman.

Twilight {GAG - blows chunks}. What you describe has been done in other vampire movies/books (all of which I would say are MUCH better IMHO). Read Ann Rice - she started this craze that has been sliding steadily 'down hill' ever since.

"pretty, shiny vampires..." {Markustay walks away shaking his head sadly}

The Southern Vampires series looks interesting - I only know it from the TV show True Blood, which I loved the first two seasons, but now its starting to loose me (I HATE when they start piling on 'other monsters' in a series).

Its funny, but as for my kernal of an idea from Johnny Mnemonic - I am now toying with the concept of tying it to my form of vampirism (I discussed this another thread). Funny how it came full-circle.

My Knights of the Purifying Sun have several 'specialist teams', like Witch-Hunters, Exorcystes, and Holy Slayers. I decided rather then create all different groups, I'd rather have all those types competing with each other in a tyrannical church hierarchy.

I use Harpers like the Rangers from LotR (which is how I think Ed originally intended them, albeit slightly more organized). I avoid most of the canon lore about the group, and would never use 'an army' of them (and the Moonstars... that name just makes my skin crawl in all the wrong ways... sounds like something a 3-yr-old would have made-up).

My DM once gave a vampiric dagger to a certain halfling in the party. Said halfling proceeded to giggle over the fact that he could stab his arm and have it immediately heal, repeatedly (this version essentially drained X amount of HP from the victim and delivered the same to the wielder in healing, doing no "normal" damage on top of the drain; yeah, a little unbalanced, but it was fun...it also talked to its wielder, and had an extremely low Int but great amounts of zeal/excitement. "Stabby-stabby-stabby-stabby!!!").

Seen...? Curses! My cover is blown....I've been lurking and skimming things here and there when I have time, lol. Had a few minutes free tonight and had to comment.

Hey Lothir, you know how some undead fix the problem when entropy starts taking over and causing degeneration and a growing smell? C'mere for a sec....and lose the jewelry...

I wonder if an unholy phylactery of longevity or oil of timelessness would slow the onset of this decay.

Personally, I've always favoured preservation, Nulathoe's Ninemen, and similar sorts of necromancy. Perfumes can work to great effect, as can lairing behind a tannery; though these might reduce one's odds in stealth, ambush, and hunting activities.
