Does anybody know of any Orders devoted to slaying vamps or Adventuring Companies that specialize in this business? For some reason something called the Order of Aster comes to mind.

Dûd Onahorz?
Markustay Posted - 31 Mar 2011 : 20:12:55
My own Homebrew Dûd Onahorz (his picture is on the cover of the OGB) was an Undead Hunter. He didn't specialized in vampires, but he wound-up going after those more often then anything else.

He was a member of the Cormyrian Stoneland Ranger Corps (The SRC, founded by Azoun and latter lead by Alusair), and his entire unit was wiped out by a vampire and his undead minions. He 'went rogue' after that, faking his own death, and his 'trademark' was a silver-tipped crossbow quarrel (and yes, he is a complete derivation of the Lone Ranger).

Just before the end of 3e, while 'hunting' in the Shining South, he met and fell in love with a Sharran woman by the name of Squantô. During the Spellplague (1385), both were bitten by a vampire lord during a what should have been a 'routine mission'. After he woke he found the strange Cerulean energies of the Plaguewave has transformed him into a daywalker, but his beloved Squantô had become a vile beast-like Nosferatu, and he was forced to slay her.

In 4e, he is more like Blade, and now specializes in Vampire-hunting. He has since picked-up a new companion - a dwarf with issues of his own - who builds incredible weaponry to combat Vampires. The dwarf also has the annoying habit of whistling while he works.

Sorry for the HB, but considering the pic I use for reference is one of the most iconic in FR, I thought it somewhat appropriate.

I am not quite sure but I think the "Company of the Red Dawn" was a group of adventurers specialised in vampire hunting - you would find details in Eric Boyd's "Blood of Malar" in Dungeon #126.

Hmm, anti-vampire organizations.... I'm suddenly thinking of Hellsing.
Ayrik Posted - 27 Mar 2011 : 10:52:30
As odd as it might sound, I can imagine an organization of vampyres dedicated to destroying vampires. Their species are in direct competition for a limited (food) resource, vampyres are smart enough to realize that they're individually weaker than vampires but as a group can enjoy certain advantages while attacking vampiric vulnerabilities, and though they are as predatory (and perhaps as evil) as vampires they may share the instinctive repulsion of all living things towards the undead. They might see vampires as a particularly offensive affront to their nature, especially since it makes their food supply all skittish about blood drinking monsters.

I wonder what happens when a vampyre contracts vampirism?
Chosen of Asmodeus Posted - 27 Mar 2011 : 10:27:33
4e contains a paragon path/prestige class of kelemvor worshippers called Doombringers who are divine casters of the obsessive bent of destroying undead. The artwork for them is one of the most rediculous yet awesome things to come out of 4e. I could see an organization of them being formed.

As for things outside of FR; not that I want to turn this into another inspiration/fantasy setting thread, I use the Sarafan Order from Legacy of Kain in my home brew. Brutal fanatics imposing an oppressive regime in the name of crushing the vampire menace once and for all.

Aww, but he's still got one wish left!! Better make it a good one- but that would mean she'd have to make him cry first..... Meh, just tell him his singing sounds like a dying albatross..... "Hmm. I wish Morgaen was here in my waiting arms for a bit of 'necking'!" *snickers*
Laerrigan Posted - 26 Mar 2011 : 03:17:13
The one greatest, insurmountable drawback to all of those excellent ideas being the fact that they're nowhere near as much fun.
Ayrik Posted - 26 Mar 2011 : 03:14:24
I wonder if an unholy phylactery of longevity or oil of timelessness would slow the onset of this decay.

Personally, I've always favoured preservation, Nulathoe's Ninemen, and similar sorts of necromancy. Perfumes can work to great effect, as can lairing behind a tannery; though these might reduce one's odds in stealth, ambush, and hunting activities.
Laerrigan Posted - 26 Mar 2011 : 03:04:17
My DM once gave a vampiric dagger to a certain halfling in the party. Said halfling proceeded to giggle over the fact that he could stab his arm and have it immediately heal, repeatedly (this version essentially drained X amount of HP from the victim and delivered the same to the wielder in healing, doing no "normal" damage on top of the drain; yeah, a little unbalanced, but it was fun...it also talked to its wielder, and had an extremely low Int but great amounts of zeal/excitement. "Stabby-stabby-stabby-stabby!!!").

Seen...? Curses! My cover is blown....I've been lurking and skimming things here and there when I have time, lol. Had a few minutes free tonight and had to comment.

Hey Lothir, you know how some undead fix the problem when entropy starts taking over and causing degeneration and a growing smell? C'mere for a sec....and lose the jewelry...
Alystra Illianniis Posted - 26 Mar 2011 : 02:46:43
Aye! Where ye been hiding? Under the baseboards? I KNEW there was an odd smell coming from there.....
Ayrik Posted - 26 Mar 2011 : 02:03:54
I suppose that depends on the dice, Fellfire. Even vampires can be killed with vampiric weapons, though the battle can be quite drawn out.

It's good to see ye again, fine Laerrigan!
Fellfire Posted - 26 Mar 2011 : 01:55:50
Can you kill yourself with a Vampiric weapon?
Laerrigan Posted - 26 Mar 2011 : 01:41:25
On you or in you?
Ayrik Posted - 26 Mar 2011 : 01:24:24
Well, I am rather fond of vampiric weapons.

Buncha life-biased haters....

Hating sparkles is ok, though.
Markustay Posted - 16 Mar 2011 : 18:30:06
Actually, Larloch IS batman.

Twilight {GAG - blows chunks}. What you describe has been done in other vampire movies/books (all of which I would say are MUCH better IMHO). Read Ann Rice - she started this craze that has been sliding steadily 'down hill' ever since.

"pretty, shiny vampires..." {Markustay walks away shaking his head sadly}

The Southern Vampires series looks interesting - I only know it from the TV show True Blood, which I loved the first two seasons, but now its starting to loose me (I HATE when they start piling on 'other monsters' in a series).

Its funny, but as for my kernal of an idea from Johnny Mnemonic - I am now toying with the concept of tying it to my form of vampirism (I discussed this another thread). Funny how it came full-circle.

My Knights of the Purifying Sun have several 'specialist teams', like Witch-Hunters, Exorcystes, and Holy Slayers. I decided rather then create all different groups, I'd rather have all those types competing with each other in a tyrannical church hierarchy.

I use Harpers like the Rangers from LotR (which is how I think Ed originally intended them, albeit slightly more organized). I avoid most of the canon lore about the group, and would never use 'an army' of them (and the Moonstars... that name just makes my skin crawl in all the wrong ways... sounds like something a 3-yr-old would have made-up).

Bladewind Posted - 16 Mar 2011 : 14:22:04
The Blackstaff is cooler than Batman though. And some of that rubs off on his personal organisations members.

The movies, maybe. But definitely not the novels. The entire quartet, [or pentad, if you include the novelette] is awash with romantic [obsessive kind of love] moments, yes. However, there's more to it than that. I particularly like the Volturi. Aro's ability to hold a small yet formidable organization that serves as their race's royalty is astounding. Jane's seemingly detached yet evil [or neutral, depending on how you look at it] disposition appeals to me as well.

No, no. The Moonstars, as in Khelben's own personal army, and splinter sect of the Harpers. Also known as the Tel Teukiira, but thank you nonetheless.
Ayrik Posted - 15 Mar 2011 : 23:42:25
I think specialty priests of Selûne can wield weapons called moon's hand and moonstar (special types of consecrated mace and morning star, respectively). I'm not sure if this is at all related to the Moonstars in your question, Fellfire. Especially since Selûnites aren't particularly interested in vampires, outside of their standard undead turning powers and their usual mucking around at night where they don't belong.
Fellfire Posted - 15 Mar 2011 : 23:02:05
Perfect. Thanks y'all. The Mhaornathil/Sentinels of the Moonbow seem very reminicient of the Huntress' of Artemis, recently popularized in the Percy Jackson books. I may be able to use that. I will also look into the Companions of the Pallid Mask, Eternal Order and Radiant Crusade. I wish that all the lore regarding the Moonstars had been compiled somewhere. Has anybody taken this on as a pet project? Thanks for the knowledge, Scribes, and the sources.

Indeed. Buffy sucks.

Only in my dreams.

But seriously, I made this point before in some other thread: there is no such thing as 'useless lore' (including non-FR or even non-fantasy). I have found that even in the worst of shows/movies I have been able to walk away with a kernel of an idea.

For instance, I was watching the vomit-worthy Johnny Mnemonic the other night (it was 3AM and I couldn't sleep), and although the movie was gawd-awful (including Keanou Reeves 'acting', or lack-thereof), I thought the idea of a powerful entity/organization having control of a 'cure' and NOT wanting to give it out because they would loose their 'cash-cow' highly intriguing, and I'm trying to figure-out how to apply that to a {dark) fantasy scenario.

So that just proves even garbage is useful (and Buffy isn't garbage... more like cheesy carp, which can be fun to watch).

Ummmm... to undermine my own point... the Twilight Saga actually makes me nauseous. I was angry at my eyes for days after watching the first one.
Bladewind Posted - 15 Mar 2011 : 16:54:40
Khelben Blackstaff's Tel Teukiira or Moonstars have thwarted many plots of vampirelords in Waterdeep, and have so ammased alot of expertise in hunting vampires over the years since their formation.
Bladewind Posted - 15 Mar 2011 : 16:07:19
Another order of interest were sponsored by Jergal, the Companions of the Pallid Mask, but they are extinct since before the Time of Troubles (from 2nd edition Powers and Pantheons). They only hunted unsanctioned or troublesome intelligent undead.

I was always kind of partial to Blade and Vampire Hunter D, my first introduction to vampire hunters (also both dhampir).

Mhaornathil are mentioned passingly in Cormanthyr: Empire of Elves, Elves of Evermeet and some elven dictionaries (Mhaor means Undeadbane). The Mhaornathil PrC is more fully described in the Elves of Fearun Netbook.

EDIT: I found another order of Sehanine that devotes considerable time to hunting undead when consulting my sources. Demihuman Deities mentions the Sentinels of the Moonbow, a group of rangers who protect elves reincarnated into animals and also hunt undead that blight the land.
