Squamata the black was an aspect of Sseth, then Set... but presumably is viewed as a separate entity. Is Squamata ever described? Who worships it? Its listed in Samarach's religion and Thindol sections, does that mean the humans worshiped this aspect, or just Yuan-Ti?

First I've heard of the old chap. Also, I think someone was being a big cheeky when coming up with the name ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squamata ) teehee...

I can see humans under the thrall of Yuan-Ti overlords being forced into grizzly cults to Squamata, but the name sounds vaguely lovecraftian to me, which could be fun.

Oh wait I found some information in Powers and Pantheons:

"In Samarach and Thindol he is worshiped as Squamata the black, the embodiment of the ever encroaching jungle which swallows anyone up who dares its dark depths"

Which does not really sound like he would be actively worshiped, just feared?

No, Squamata WOULD be actively worshipped. Remember, in the Realms "everyone" believes in ALL of the gods (that they've heard of, anyway), and worships them all. Most commoners primarily worship one deity or a handful of deities (human farmers venerate Chauntea above all others, for example), but make offerings for the aid of, or to ward off the displeasure of, all other deities.
So anyone who has to venture into the jungle or work near its verges would perform prayers, give offerings, and reverence by respectful gestures and thoughts Squamata to keep the dangers of the jungle at bay.

Indeed!

You could have all sorts of fun coming up with odd little rituals people perform to keep Squamata at bay, as well as looney cults that seek to hasten his work of swallowing up every trace of civilisation and fling themselves into his verdant may, etc ,etc...

I realize he'd be worshiped, but that might just be for the purpose of "Please don't eat me!" Rather than having anyone have him as say a Patron deity, aside from some insane cultists... For example in Samarach people might turn to other deities if the Church of Leira [Cyric?] were oppressive.

Note: I am thinking about this because I want to run a campaign in Samarach. I am trying to think of what religions might exist on a low level there. I was thinking of Ubtao, Savras, Shekenister, and Talona? (By the human population) To me Shekenister seems like a good alternative religion, with the five aspects and all. And she is described as being a Greater deity, are there really enough Nagas for that? = P ?

Yeah, I think the term 'worship' can be applied fairly loosely when discussing some of the more obscure deities of the realms. 'Worshipping' Squamata might not require you so much to attend sunday mass every week at one of his temples as to make some sort of sign, mutter a particular phrase or carry a mundane charm in your back pocket to ward off his evil whenever you pass by or through a threatening bit of jungle.

I suppose Squamata, with his whole jungle-eating-everything theme, could act as a draw to people fed up with the endless lies and deceit of Leira. The faithful could sell it as a return to honesty; the basic, naked essence of primal existence, wild and free in the jungle, and all that.

Who else do you imagine might be worshiped in Samarach on a smaller scale?

hmmm...

A quick big of googling reveals that there's a Lantanese gnome logging camp somewhere in Samarach, so you could have 'machine cults' of some sort wafting around, or even stories of new mischievous spirits cavorting across the lands with strange practices forming around them (gnomish pantheon). Also, as a vassal state of Nimbral, a nation famous for it's pegasus knights and other such exotic things, Akadi could be a popular deity by association with the exotic flying emissaries of their mysterious overlords.
