I'm setting aside this scroll for any particular RPG news our Candlekeep scribes may learn from this year's Gen Con. This includes info about any and all WotC products [like core 4e D&D, Star Wars Saga Edition, EBERRON, etc.], as well as from those of third-party publishers, and from the folks over at Paizo. I'll even extend this to allow discussion about RPG products from altogether different settings and/or publishers, like Catalyst Game Labs [BattleTech, CthulhuTech, and Shadowrun for example].
I thought it best to have just the one discussion scroll, making it easier for interested scribes to find exactly what they're looking for.
Let's hear from those of you who were lucky enough to attend this year.

Oddly, Given the 4e concepts and preconceptions, I think Dark Sun will be a good setting for the way the game plays.
I loved Athas, but I never got anyone to play in that setting. Too bad, too. I hope it does well for them, and I'll at least look at the setting book for ideas to steal.

And, if this could count to relate FR and DS, both settings suffer great changes in the hands of Troy Denning´s novels.

Now, back to wait what will came from the FR Seminars...
I'm both pleased and a little annoyed by this news. I was really hoping that DRAGONLANCE would be the next setting featured by Wizards. But DARK SUN is definitely a worthwhile trade-off.
And I suspected the events of the "Prism Pentad" novels would be included, as they've only just received re-printed editions.

The fact that they mentioned deliberately sitting on the setting for a while makes me wonder just how far back 4E was being planned...
The interview linked specifically says they'll be including the Prism Pentad, to take full advantage of its reprints.

| Perhaps it means that those novels won't be included in the official timeline/history established for 4e DS. The events of the novels could simply be featured in a brief section or a series of sidebars in the Campaign Guide that include alternate options for DMs wanting to explore the post-"Prism Pentad" Athas. |

| I was just Googling this subject, and not having much luck... has anybody heard anything about the Realms seminar on Friday? I'm curious as to what was revealed, but not expecting a whole lot... after all, all we have from this point in are DDi articles, and I have no intention of subscribing because there's nothing I can use (i.e., pre-Spellplague) being offered. Maybe I'm just looking too quickly; after all, it's only 6:20 PM Friday on the West Coast... |

Infallible logic, Brimstone... I can't fault you there. I was just a wee bit choked to see Wizards beat Paizo for Best Publisher. As far as Best Ruleset goes, I still think the best system out there is Green Ronin's True20. |

| I don't know how reliable this is, but when i went to pick up my copy of the Pathfinder RPG from my FLGS on Thursday (sadly, they did not get their shipment until Friday), the employee on shift got a call from a co-worker @ GenCon, and he said that the co-worker said that the Paizo booth was crowded and the WotC one was rather empty. So there is a good chance of Paizo getting named best publisher next year. |

Well, as much as I love to think negatively of WotC, I'm still not sure we can see this as an indicator of anything. Paizo was presenting the new thing this year, so of course they're going to get a lot of attention. If we see the same thing at next year's GenCon, then I'll be willing to admit that WotC's dominance is being challenged. |

IIRC on the BLOG at Paizo, they said that they didn't submit the PATHFINDER Beta Rule Set for the Ennies. Maybe next year. Wizards needs some good Compitition(sp).
I still have not heard how long it took for them to sell all of the Pathfinder Books they brought to Gencon. If you checked out the Enworld news page, or the Paizo Blog, you would SEE what I mean. That was alot of books. |

I thought ALL the booths were crowded!
I'm back and exhausted, but also absolutely thrilled and on fire with energy and enthusiasm for my work, my gaming, and for the Realms.
It was great to meet and game with Brian and Matt James, Erik Scott de Bie, and Garen Thal (on the day his fantastic Airspur article came out nonetheless, though the frenetic pace of the con kept me from reading it until I got home). And also tons of other great folks from Wizards, Paizo, Catalyst Games, Gaming Paper, Alea Tools, Reaper Miniatures, the RPGA, and AEG. Everywhere I went folks were generous with their time, and enthusiastic about what they were doing.
I've been going to sf/fantasy cons as a professional writer for over a decade now, but I'd never been to a Gen-Con. It was by far my favorite convention ever.
I got to play in some great D&D games. First, I made 6th level with my main LFR character, playing with a great bunch of people--a really diverse set of players that included me, a Denver dad about my age with his 13 year old son and 12 year old daughter, and a 22 year old woman from St. Louis. We rocked!
Then I played in the supah-sekrit game co-run by the James Brothers. Other players included Garen Thal and Erik, and a bunch of great Realms enthusiasts from all over the world (including the LFR Dalelands writing director who posts as Gomez over at the Wizards boards). That game, well. There's something pretty special on the horizon, y'all.
And when I had an hour to kill I did a Delve with a bunch of guys, coincidentally DMed by Gomez, and we got pasted but had a lot of laughs. The guys policing the line even gave me a free miniature because I let some people ahead of me so they could play at the same table with their friends!
The Dealer's Room, wow! It's more like a trade show than the "cons" I attend, even WorldCon. I spent way too much money, but am happy with my new magnets for marking conditions, my Reaper minis, and this awesome looking boardgame called the Adventurers.
Programming stuff was fun too. I went to the Realms panel, some writery stuff with Jean Rabe and Richard Lee Byers, some Catalyst Games stuff, and, ha! The Spin-a-Yarn.
I will again insist that it's not my fault, and that in my view pudding is a wholesome, family friendly foodstuf.
Which brings me to the huge thrill of meeting a childhood hero and living icon, Ed Greenwood. We shared a meal with Erik, the quiet-but-deadly Jaleigh Johnson, and Realms author/editrix Erin Evans and it was fantastic. I asked Erin to take a picture of me with Ed and Ed reacted with, erm, unexpected enthusiasm, let's say. I sent it to my wife and she texted back, "I thought you said you'd never met him." And then later, "Where's his other hand?"
Anyway, if you ever get a chance to go, I highly recommend it. Everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves, and everybody was kind.

All I can say is Dragon Age looks fricking wicked from the demo they had at the comp section. Oh yea, Green Ronin is also taking the comp game and making it into a pen and paper setting, they had a flyer about it at their booth.
Otherwise, I spent the weekend in the dealers hall and sight seeing again. Well, Saturday I also visited the museum to admire the Tut exhibit which was really beautiful. Wish I could have taken pics of that exhibit but it was one of the places that photo's are barred.
I have 100+ pics this year since I have a new camera that can store 1k pics. If anyone wants the links, or is already on my face book friends, just ask.
Yesterday stunk because of the storms in Chicago. My 1030 PM arrival in Rochy turned out to be a 2AM arrival. Mutters.
Still, was a great weekend. Does anyone have any info about the Realms seminar? |

Realms seminar! Okay, in no particular order, just stuff I remember while I'm popping in between mowing the front yard and the back:
Mark Sehestedt's name is HUGE on the proposed cover for book one of new trilogy.
They announced the Bros. James upcoming Dungeon article set north of the Moonsea.
Chris Tulach talked about LFR a bunch, including announcing that the next "mini" campaign (they've got a new name for it, LFR Explorations or something like that) will be set in Undermountain.
They polled the room on what other cities people would like to see covered in article series like the ongoing Akanûl pieces: people mentioned Shadowdale and Waterdeep, of course, I proposed Nathlan, and Erik S dB got a big roar of approval when he proposed Westgate.
Next "standalone series" of novels (a lá The Wilds, etc] will be The Planestouched.
The Ed presents Waterdeep series is essentially ongoing, and may continue more or less indefinitely so long as there's still a demand.
Man, I know there's something else my ears pricked up about, but, the BIG one was that Ed described his upcoming Dragon column series. Sounded pretty freeform, with no "series" theme. He mentioned that it'll all be stuff that you can drop into your Realms game, and might be a trend, an NPC, a small organization, any number of things. He's drafted twelve and I think he said he's turned in the first-round rewrites on three of those. Yay!

Nice. Dragon Age has definitely been one of the games I've been looking forward to. And the prospect of a pen & paper setting just makes it that much more appealing.

As you recall from some of our previous discussions, this was one of the major incentives for me to journey to Gen Con this year. I was really looking forward to seeing this exhibit.

It was beautiful. They had items from each of the chambers of the tomb. I can recall some of the statues, cartouches, a bed, a toilet (lol), many pieces of jewelry, and many items. All told, I think they had about three to four dozens pieces on display.
