I'm not sure if it's just a typo, but in the old 2E Forgotten Realms Atlas the city of Sheirtalar is marked as a larger city such as Waterdeep or Calimport.

Can anyone provide ANY information on this city? I looked on the Forgotten Realms wiki and they have practically nothing on the subject.

The wiki is not exhaustive and Sheirtalar hasn't had a massive amount written about it. I encourage you to join us and add what you can.

Will do! Is there anything special about joining the wiki or can I simply just sign up and enter information whenever I get it?

You don't even need to sign up! You can edit anything you like straight away. I encourage you to sign up however, if only to dismiss most of the adverts. I feel it also aids in becoming part of our community.

We have some guidelines we'd appreciate you following for standards and legal purposes but you can contribute on any topic you like.

Will do! Thanks!

I see the confusion though, in the FR Atlas. I think the wrong symbol might have been used for Sheirtalar, unless I/we missed something about huge waves of refugees going there for whatever reason. But Selgaunt, Saerloon, and Suzail all had populations over 100k in 2e, theoretically making them similar to Waterdeep, but they didn't get that symbol either.

Probably just an error then. IIRC, only 5-6 cities got the "3 ring" treatment in the FR Atlas: Waterdeep, Calimport, Sheirtalar, and 2 or 3 cities in Kara Tur whose names I can't remember.

50,000 isn't all that small, really. It's similar to Hillsfar or Marsember, double the size of Elturel, 3 times the size of Arabel, or 4 Tilvertons.

That sounds more appropriate for Waterdeep's population.

Yeah 50K isn't small by any means, I just thought Sheirtalar had a much larger population based on how it's depicted in the 2E Forgotten Realms Atlas.

Looks like the sourcebook The Shining South might have some info as well.

Just wondering, what source said that? Because in 1st edition, it was noted as around 100,000. I note this because the Thayan city of Bezantur and Waterdeep had very close populations (prior of course to Bezantur being hit by a tidal wave and later the population drop due to the rebellion).

What source said that Waterdeep only had a population of 10,000 in 2E? That seems really low.

It is also important to remember that population numbers vary widely between editions without rhyme or reason. Sometimes it happens dramatically without explanation. As a result, you should just view any huge population changes not described in the fluff as a retcon to reflect the new editions rules.

Thanks guys! At a population of 50,000 Sheirtalar is nowhere near as large as I thought it was.

There is information on Sheirtalar in the "Serpent Kingdoms" sourcebook (pgs 101-102). There are also scattered references in published realmslore, chiefly in "Prayers from the Faithful" and "Pages from the Mages".
