I've been searching and searching for a good dungeon to stand in as an abandoned dwarf hold.

I looked through the Dungeon of Death and Forge of Fury. They both seemed very underwhelming and lacking flavor to me.

The monsters and traps seemed very very basic.

Dungeon of Death for all it's grisly history seemed like more of a comedy with mischievous monsters meant to not even pose a real threat.

I'm looking for something a bit more heavy duty, like Shimmergloom. Or something a bit more sinister like Tomb of Caragthax the Reaver.

Any recommendations?

The first five are maps of the stronghold containing the Axe of the Dwarvish Lords from the 2e adventure of the same name. The map book itself was 8 pages, so I don't even know if that's all of it, I don't have my physical copy handy to check. It should be enough to get you started, though.

There's always this, too: https://rpgcharacters.wordpress.com/maps/the-dyson-megadelve/

I think the atmosphere of the place is something you'll have to convey outside of the map, and therefore any map will do as long as it's big enough for your needs.

Wow thank you. I didn't know about that adventure. I wish I could find bigger files of the maps.

The Hall of Four Ghosts to the west of the High Forest is a Dwarven ruin and then there is always Hellgate Keep.

Tethyamar perhaps? I've always mapped out dwarven holds like the old Mithral Hall map. Dyson Logos has some free really good maps to use also.
