I might even say as a school of magic or prestige class. This is a 1st level accessible class suitable as a base class for an Evil or Red wizard.

If strictly a Demonologist a Chaotic Evil only alignment. If any Evil then Chaotic for Demons Neutral for Daemons and Lawful for Devils.

Start as a summoning of the alignment class of specialist, communing, summoning, semi infernal based Arcane based clerical kind of Wizard. Dedicate one's self to a Power and their associated demon / daemon / devil sub types. In place of a familiar one gets a minor creature type. Quasit Imp or Quickling.

Spells from the power reflect the power, Not a Female Drow Cleric of Lolth but a Male Dedicated Demonologist. or A Human Male Demonologist / Necromancer of Orcus. Or Demogorgan etc...

As one develops the familiar gains some power and one gets to summon types of demons 1-6, even transform at later levels into a demon. One communes with ones' familiar developing a focus on the alignment and gains deeper insight into the infernal power and alignment shifts.

Demonologist generally doesn't follow a deity but rather is dedicated to a specific Infernal power. Sell their soul at higher levels and gain capabilities of their Infernal power, infernal language use, etc...

10th level Demonologist of Demogorgon 5th level Red Wizard. At his 8th level Demonologist gains a split personality, at 10th level demonologist grows a second head with a demonic personality and two tentacle arms under the demons control. for example.

Demonologist of Orcus gains power over Undead, control of Undead, summon undead, an undead friend or lover rises as a familiar. developes into different undead types. Demonologist gains spell power. Companion becomes more powerful. Starts as a skeleton or zombie, ghoul ghast wight to mummy and lich or shadow to wraith spectral power to a ghost.

Grazzt demononlogist are all most beautiful male or female high charisma high comeliness. Charming possession eventual Succubus or like summoned at high levels a vampire or the like.

Demonologist are masters of infernal lore, they know their Masters
and their Masters enemies. Plane of choice lore and methods of summoning controlling and travel to and from such places to their home plane.

Just a little bit more fun adding to the realm.

They're called Thralls of <Demon Prince> and are prestige classes.

Yeah, what Lord of Bones said, check the Book of Vile Darkness. There's a demonologist prestige class, a diabolist prestige class, several Thralls of certain demons (Demogorgon, Graz'zt, Juiblex, Orcus) as prestige classes, and Disciples of certain devils (Asmodeus, Baalzebul, Dispater, Mammon, Mephistopheles) as prestige classes. Its obviously not all inclusive, but its a start. Granted, its 3.5 not 5e, but its there for ideas.

Alavairthae, may your skill prevail
