I've found something I consider an interesting challenge: Multiclass your character evenlly, and keeping in character with your character.
For example; someone with a Nobel background could be a fighter, trained as a duelist, and thanks to learning intrigue be a Mastermind subtype of Rouge.

Maybe a Cleric of a faith not aligned with Good might become a Fighter

Things like this, but done evenly. I find it actually can be very rewarding as far as character development goes. Otherwise the character seem too focused and one dimensional as far as abilities go.

Has anyone else tried this, and what did they think of it?

It depends on the edition and the classes chosen (which leads to the question of what edition you're talking about). For instance, in 3rd edition, it worked well with melee classes, but not with spellcasters, so they accomplished it with the prestige classes like eldritch knight, mystic theurge, arcane hierophant, arcane trickster, etc..

In 5th edition, doing this with fighter and other rogue classes would work, but not well with spellcasters without some new rule creation of some sort. What I've done was create a feat for a character to take. For example, for fighter/wizards, I required the fighter class to be an eldritch knight and they could combine that with wizard. Here's the Raumathari Battlemage feat that I created for 5e:


Raumathari Battlemage
Prerequisites -
warcaster feat, at least three levels in fighter class with the eldritch knight archetype class chosen, at least two levels in wizard with the arcane tradition of either School of Abjuration or School of Evocation or War Magic (see Xanathar's Guide to Everything for information on War Magic)
The spellcasters of ancient Raumathar learned to blend their knowledge of sword and battlefield magics, and as a result, many stories of the ancient Raumathari Battlemages have spread throughout Faerun and the Hordelands. Some say that they uncovered these secrets from fey benefactors who wanted to see the foul scourge of Narfell fall. Some say these secrets were a present from the powerful primordial lord, Kossuth, in exchange for some service. Others say they uncovered this lore beneath the Priador in old Sarrukh caverns. Meanwhile, others say that the Raumathari simply developed this style on their own. The truth probably lies somewhere in between all of these.

The character retains all cantrips known from both the wizard and fighter (eldritch knight archetype) classes. However, all spells known as an eldritch knight are lost. In replacement, the "spells known and prepared" and "spell slots" for the character are treated as if the character were a wizard of a level equal to the character's class level in wizard + 1 + 1/2 <the character's class level in fighter (eldritch knight archetype) (rounded down)>. For example, a character with 6 levels of wizard and 7 levels of fighter (eldritch knight archetype) would have spells prepared and spell slots available as if he were a 10th level wizard (6 + 1 +3). If the character were to multiclass with any other spellcasting class, he would still prepare spells as a 9th lvl wizard, but his spell slots would be adjusted as though he were a 9th lvl wizard multiclassing with another class.
In addition, the character's weapons to which he is bonded can act as his arcane focus when casting spells. Also, once per day per six character levels, using his weapons as a focus the character may cast a spell without having to use either the verbal or somatic spell component.


So, in the end, the feat can be used by a character who wants to go full split 10th fighter/10th wizard (and at 20th lvl has "spell slots" and "spells prepared" as a 16th level wizard)… or maybe someone who just goes say 6th lvl fighter/14th wizard (and at 20th level has "spell slots" and "spells prepared" as an 18th level wizard).... or someone going 12th fighter/8th wizard (gains 3 melee attacks plus other eldritch knight stuff, and has "spell slots" and "spells prepared" as a 15th wizard, plus breaking evenly to get feats/ability increases). Note, not breaking the classes at 4th level increments would make the character essentially lose a feat/ability improvement....BUT not breaking on these points is also quite nice as some of the nice abilities of the classes come in at these odd levels (double attack at 5th lvl fighter, 3 attacks at 11th level for fighter, Indomitable at 9th lvl fighter, war magic at 7th eld knight, eldritch strike at 10th lvl eld knight). So, in building this feat to encourage continuing to level in both classes rather than just focusing wizard, it allows the person to make their own "warrior-mage" that fits his view. In comparison, a character without this feat allowed in their game could go say 5 levels of fighter and 15 as a wizard, and still be a 15th level wizard with double attack, so taking this feat just kind of gives the character some options to maybe gain a few more spells or maybe gain a few more fighter tricks, and it makes HOW you build it out variant depending on what you picture.

This and many other similar things can be found up on DM's Guild in my Complete Red Book of Spell Strategy. Note the prerequisites above which would require already having bought one feat, making a Raumathari Battlemage easier for humans. I also have some rules in said DM's Guild offering that make buying feats easier with a trade off for daily hit dice (permanently trading in their next 5 hit dice gains at 5th, 10th, and/or 15th level to instead gain a feat... with some caveats for always losing your greatest hit dice written in ).
