I've been watching a let's play of the original gold box game.

I remember the original pools trilogy and always fun to stew on something.

what did you like?

What did you dislike?

opinions on Tyranthraxus?

Loved it.... I would spend so many hours building good characters and then doing the same things at the monsters with the big random treasures to get just what I wanted.

yeah

It's been real fun seeing the need to train, the ultima like game engine and the overall feel of the game.

I love it's hexedit protection as well.

but yeah

how close is it to the books?

Obviously no ren o the blade, but anything remotely close?

I never thought of it being like Ultima, but now that you mention it, I guess the isometric 2d/3d look was in the old Ultima games too.

Not really like the books, but loosely based on.

The book was loosely based on the game, rather than the other way around.

The game is great (or at least, was) and ground breaking for its time. My favourite bit is you can actually leave Phlan and explore the North Moonsea coast; and cleanse the River which has an in game effect making the river clean. More modern RPGs should have instances where your actions actually change the game world permanently (for the better if you're successful of course!)>
