The difference has led me to not purchase a few of the Sundering novels...

I pre-ordered The Herald for $8, paid Just over $7 for Godborn and The Companions in the same. Now the other three are priced at The Reaver $15.37 and The Adversary @ $15.49

I want to read and own them all....but I purchase 3 of them even though I still thought they were about a buck or two high....but no way can I support even my favorite authors when their books are priced at 2x of those I purchased. Hells, they are even over 200% of the mass market paperback price.

It's really maiking me crazy and feeling bad for the authors of the Novels I am not buying.

If an e-book costs more than a printed paperback, someone is clearly jacking around with the prices.

ebooks are priced higher when the physical book is only out in hardcover. The ebook price will drop when the paperback edition comes out. This seems to be a pretty standard industry practice and not anything to do with WOTC.

Since both The Reaver and The Adversary are still out in hardback that is why they are more then the others (The Herald sems to be a bargin to get people to preorder). When their respective paperbacks come out the price will drop.

I should have mentioned that because Amazon often discounts hardback new releases, this can occassionally result in the physical book being cheaper than the ebook, but if I understand how it works, this is due to Amazon not WOTC.

I don't understand how anyone could pay more than $5 for an e-book.

That is when you live somewhere where physical books are hard to get. And ordering from amazon takes forever. Also here in finland paperbacks can cost up to 19,99€ and thats about 27,50$.

Indeed. Learned it the hard way with Feist's novels.

Note, however, that some e-book prices remain high even after the paperbacks are already out. And people who are far from likely to buy the physical books from their local bookstores may still go for the overpriced e-books, because sometimes the shipping fee is thrice, four times (so forth) the price of the actual book.

So really, this "phenomenon" is nothing new.

RW, I suggest you just wait a little longer for the prices to go down, or just purchase the hardback.

Every beginning has an end.

DragonReader‘s explanation suggests that publishers want to sell as many hardbacks as they can before resorting to paperbacks. I wonder how profit margins compare? The only observation I can add is that one often sees boxes and piles of dog-eared paperbacks being trashed, but hardbacks seem to be perceived as somehow better or more valuable and thus rarely find themselves suffering the same fate.

Want to bang your head against a wall? Look at this pricing.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Herald-Sundering-Book-VI-ebook/dp/B00H6J6KQQ/ref=pd_ybh_1

and

http://www.amazon.com/The-Sentinel-Sundering-Book-ebook/dp/B00FO5W6VW/ref=pd_ybh_2

I pre-ordered the Herald just to lock in the price.

Also if space (for the books) is a problem people will buy e-books as well. I have a one year old and two teenage daughters and not a lot of room. Storing e-books is a very nice perk with limited space on the bookcase.

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

One of the reasons I dont bother that much with ebooks is because the pricing is often similar if not greater than what one would pay for a paperback version.

Well it is not free but there is Kindle Matchbook, which allows you to get ebook copies of your prior purchases from amazon for $2.99 or less. Although I thin not all publishers/books participate in the program

Also I know Brandon Sanderson had a promotion once where if you bought a hardcopy of one of his books he would send you the ebook for free. You just had o send him a picture holding the book or a receipt or something.
