Reading a John Grisham book, now. I've never read any of his stuff before, though I did once have to listen to an audiobook of his.

The book is called The Rainmaker. The Amazon ratings are great, and a friend recommended it, but it has thus far failed to grab me.

Movies based on Grisham's books are entertaining, but I'm not sure if I could sit down and read a laywer-thriller.

I've been expanding my reading base just the tiniest amount, mostly out of curiosity and a desire to see if I find the hype justified. Sometimes I do, sometimes I do not.

I do have to note that I'm only about 100 pages into this one... So it's got the potential to justify its ratings, still.

I'm thinking of reading some new-to-me Realms novels, next. Been sitting on some of them for a while.

Have you tried any historical fiction books? It's a pretty easy transition from fantasy. I try to split my reading time 50/50 now between fantasy and historical fiction.

Does steampunk count?

Historical fiction (and most alt-history) stuff generally doesn't get my attention, though there are exceptions.

Me broadening my literary horizons a bit more hasn't been as much a thing of wanting to try something new or getting tired of my usual fare; it's more of me being more willing to try something I'd previously dismissed.

Well I don't read any of the alternative history stuff like Flint, but I can give you great "regular" historical fiction recs for medieval and ancient history. Interested?

The book did pick up and become enjoyable, but I had some quibbles with the main case the lawyer had -- pretty much everything went exactly his way. I kept expecting some unexpected development that would leaving him scrambling for a last minute save, but the only unexpected developments happened in the waning pages of the book, after the trial was done.

And the back cover blurb had me thinking that the major case was going to have the lawyer running for his life, and that also failed to happen.

So while I did like the book, I don't see myself reading anything else by Grisham any time soon.

I wanted to delve into something more familiar, so I'm revisiting the DragonCrown War Saga by Michael Stackpole -- one of the few authors that can sell me a book by putting his name on it.

Work has really messed up my reading schedule, but I finished City of Blades by Robert Jackson Bennett and it was fantastic. Perhaps even better than City of Stairs. I hope he'll do more books set in this world. In the meantime, I'll have to trak down some of his other work and give it a read.

Next up???? I am thinking Legion: Skin Deep by Brandon Sanderson

So I did read Legion: Skin Deep by Brandon Sanderson. It was a quick, fun read. Really enjoyed it.

Then I got sidetracked by work and read... nothing.

Now I will try and start [b]Den of Thieves[b] by David Chandler.

Currently working on a book called Out of the Dark, by David Weber. It's the classic formula of "aliens invade Earth and find out they bit off more than they could chew," but it mixes it up a bit...

The aliens in question are part of a galactic alliance, and their authorization to colonize Earth was based on a 600 year old survey -- specifically, during the Battle of Agincourt. There are strict rules about how the members of the alliance interact with primitive cultures, and the social and technological level they saw 600 years ago was perfectly okay for them to colonize.

Our modern tech level, however, would have us strictly off-limits. The particular alien race that's invading has decided to ignore that, because they are generally pretty aggressive and think that humans could make some useful vassals.

The problem is, though they have very superior technology, the particular restrictions against messing with cultures that have any kind of technological advancement means they're not used to encountering anything past our 15th century technology... And apparently, no other race had advanced their technology so far in that timespan, so they were quite unprepared for what our tech could do.

They're also not used to the way humans think, so the aliens are quite surprised when they wipe out all the capitals of the world and all of the military bases they can find, and then humans inexplicably don't surrender (in part because the absence of leadership means there is no one to order their nations to do so).

So at the point I'm at in the book right now, it's been about a week since everyone's militaries were wiped out (even surface naval units at sea) and the aliens began landing. Society is starting to break down, especially once the aliens figure out that leaving the internet up wasn't smart (they intended to take it down earlier, but it was more robust then they expected). There are some isolated, unsupported military units scattered around, and of course armed civilians, as well... So it's becoming asymmetric warfare.

The POV has shifted between some of the aliens (usually right before they are unpleasantly surprised by human tech) and some others: a family of gun enthusiasts in South Carolina, some Marines and Army guys that survived a plane crash in Romania, a mechanized Army unit in Afghanistan, and some others.

I am, obviously, quite enjoying this one.
