I'm not reading nearly as much as I would like, but I'm currently on the last 100-page stretch of Forsaken House. Now that things have really taken off in this book, I can see how one could make the argument for lack of character development - Ilsevele in particular.
It's still a good novel. I'm not thoroughly enjoying the book as much as I was when I first started it. And I'm not quite sure why, I can't seem to put a finger on it. I still really like the book though, and it easily competes with all other good Realmslore that I've read.

"Surrender now, or we will slay you!" the leader of the creatures called, a bit louder and more forcefully.
"A moment, please, my friend," Zasian said, motioning to the dwarf for patience. "We are discussing your terms."

"Ye heading off with Invo . . . Inno . . . that durned elf?"

Finished Working for Bigfoot last weekend and read a bunch of short stories.

Now I am back in the Realms and reading Fire in the Blood by Erin Evans. Just started but am digging it so far.

Nope. Elfstones was my fave of the bunch, and it's the only one I've replaced. Not sure what will be next, but it won't be anything Terry Brooks.

I read one of those books, One Shot. The writing style was somewhat jarring to me (so many short, choppy sentences). The overall story wasn't bad, but not enough to make me want to read more.

Yes, those sentences!

For me they're not choppy (so far), just short, sweet and a little silly. I have a feeling Child's style is going to creep into my Realms writing while I read this book.

Im reading the same book at the moment. Just curious, what are the inconsistencies you were thinking of.

I allways liked that book, I never cared for what was done with the area later though.

No Canon, more stories, more Realms.

Well I'm only about 30 pages in but the Dambrath section mentions that some of the cities in Dambrath were small compared to Halruaan cities. The Halruaan section stated that the largest city only had a population of 7-8 thousand, yet many of the cities from Dambrath were 20,000+.

EDIT: Just noticed this book calls the Great Swamp "Kethid" instead of "Rethild." Not sure which one is the typo now.

Finished this one last night. It was interesting.

The book follows the development of a technology, called Soulminder by its creator. The idea is that when someone is severely injured and could die before doctors are able to fix their bodies, then Soulminder would capture the person's soul as it left their body, and hold it in place. The body could then be fixed pretty much at leisure, and once it's well enough, the soul is released back into the body. The only catch is that the soul has to be scanned beforehand.

Most of the book is from the perspective of the guy that thought up Soulminder -- he was driven by the death of his son, who could have been saved if medical assistance had reached him in time. This is what drives the guy, and throughout the book, he never wavers from the idea of keeping Soulminder for that purpose.

The book starts with the efforts to make the technology work. Once they figure that out (in the first chapter or two), the rest of the book is dealing with the social, political, and economic results of this technology's invention, and also with the technology being used in other ways. I'd seen some of the ideas before (like the recreational swapping of bodies, or "recycling" usable bodies after they were no longer occupied), but one variation on that theme was nifty: letting murder victims have temporary bodies so that they can testify against their murderers.

Of course, the technology does get used for nefarious purposes, as well, which the inventor has to deal with. Some of those nefarious uses are by various governments.

It's not really an action/thriller or anything like that; most of the action happens in Soulminder offices. But it was interesting to see the ramifications of such an invention explored like that.

Next up is The Aeronaut's Windlass, the first book of the new Cinder Spires series by Jim Butcher. I ran to buy that on my lunch break, forgetting -- as I do every time -- that when I do that on a 45 minute lunch break, it generally means I've got maybe 5 minutes to wolf down my lunch and get back to my desk.

A real low point in that series, for me. That book is a downer.

The next book is where everything starts to come together, though it's only a start.

By the gods, I was thinking the same thing while reading it. Completely boring compared to the first two books of the series. Glad it's not just me.

I don't know that I'd call it boring, but it does lack a lot of the action of the other books. I just found it depressing, with what happens... Though some parts are quite important, and the world is revisited later. Actually, once you get to the fifth book, all of the worlds get revisited, for various reasons.

I've finished The Aeronaut's Windlass, which I found very enjoyable, and which I'd quite recommend.

I'm reading the newest Star Wars book, now, Aftermath. It's just a hair better than meh. It's not bad, it's just not really grabbing me.

The next book will likely be The Last American Vampire. I'm not into the vampire schtick at all (other than Dracula, of course), but I read the previous book, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, for its sheer goofy concept, and quite enjoyed it.

I wouldn't expect a book with that title to be a lighthearted, comedic romp.

Quite true... It's hard to explain what I mean without spoiling it for people who might want to read it and I would highly recommend the book. But first read Mayhem by the same author. Murder is a direct sequel.

RAS, Night Of The Hunter. Almost done thank goodness. Can't get past bringing characters back from the dead. Let them go and move on. Enjoy the dark elf side of the story. If the companions were left out, it would be ok. I just can't get past bringing them back.

I'm the same way with fantasy books. I understand that resurrection and such is a viable option (especially in a D&D setting), but using it in a novel just speaks of laziness on the author's part.
