Finished Dawnbringer. It was ok, but the 115 year time jump after the first 90 pages was weird.

Finished The Rook, and decided to try a new thriller I'd recently picked up, The Trident Deception. I'm not a huge fan of that genre, but the cover blurb compared it most favorably to The Hunt for Red October, and that's a book I quite enjoyed.

"Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf", almost true; the Spellfire trilogy parallely; and Gaito Gazdanov's "The spectre of Alexander Wolf". It started aout good, very atmospheric, captivating sceneries, but the narrator quickly turned too navel gazing for my personal liking. I've read too many of these kinds of novels.

How are you enjoying the Spellfire trilogy so far? I really liked Spellfire and Crown of Fire.

I like how the characters exude some human warmth. They're not even trying to be edgy. It's - well, the books are from the 80ties, but it's a bit of fresh air compared to much I've read coming from D&D-related fantasy. I think currently, some are taking the concept of "gritty fantasy" a bit too far, or rather, it's so uch the norm it got boring. I enjoy that right now. I'm on a marathon, Forgotten Realms wise, and this is the literary equivalent to comfort food for me right now.
Although someone spolit the end for me, and I was... "Whyyyyy?"

Argh, I hate that! Glad you are enjoying them. The old Realms books definitely have a different feel compared to the ones of today.

Finished White Night, book #9 in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. Another good one.

Then I read The Dark Tower: The Drawing of the Three: Prisoner a prequel graphic novel to Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Enjoyed it.

Now reading Small Favor, book #10 in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher.

I'm a bit weird with spoilers, myself -- they don't bug me.

Sometimes, when I know the ending of a book, I find myself trying to figure out how the story gets from the place I'm reading to that known ending.

I enjoyed Pikel's character as a teenager, but reading about him in my mid 30's is kind of annoying.

Finished The Trident Deception; that was quite the ride. As I mentioned previously, the cover blurb compares it to The Hunt for Red October -- and I will agree that it certainly ranks up there with it.

Next up is an WWII alt history, V-S Day, which, from the back cover blurb, has the space race starting during WWII, with Germany getting there first. I've been eyeballing this book since it came out in hardcover last year, so it hit the to-read list as soon as I saw the paperback.

After that will be the next book in the Safehold series, Like a Mighty Army. I've been thoroughly enjoying that series and would recommend it to anyone.

Have you heard about Clash of Eagles yet? It's an alternate history book where Rome reaches what is now America and goes to war with the natives. Sounds pretty cool!

I may have to look into that one.

I'm actually not all that into alternate history, but this particular book caught my eye a while ago, perhaps because of my interest in WWII.

I like the idea of alternate history stories but haven't picked one up yet. Turtledove is supposed to have some great WWII Alt History books.

So, I've finished Spellfire, and to me it's very obvious that the story's supposed to continue from there. Picking up "Crown of Fire", I relaized that it was published 14 years later! (The story picks up pretty close to the end of Spellfire, though.)

Does anyone know the reason for that?

Anyways, yeah, three quarters through "Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf" and starting "Crown of Fire". I don't remember when i read just one book at once.

Who knows. Ed always has alot of projects going on so maybe Crown of Fire just kept getting put off for later. I think Hand of Fire came out at least 5 years after Crown too.

I think it was more because TSR had Ed writing other stuff, and only later decided to revisit Shandril. Remember, Ed has always been a freelancer, and the novels department dictates what they want and when they want it -- which is why we keep getting Elminster novels.
