With none but the Core classes to choose from, I went with the Paladin. Though why all their spells are based off of Wisdom is beyond me, Pathfinder does a pretty good job of making it more of a viable class.

And I can also do UNGODLY amout of damage with Charging Smite, which always makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside .

There are many classes I really like, but usually I end up being especially fond of the tanks and there it is the

Fighter

mostly, sometimes also the Ranger (two weapons style) or Paladin.

Also love wizards and sorcerers (and psyonics which I consider most cool), but as said above, in the end it is usually the tanks.

I'm all about the Bards and Monks!! I also love a good Wizard or Cleric, but i think that's the pagan in me coming out....

Wizard....I have my complaints about the class as compared to others, but a good DM and quirky, thoughtful RP can work around them or even turn them into great stuff . I think my love of the class is the obsessive artist and the bookish scientist in me dancing around together with linked hands in childish delight at getting to face the same direction and accomplish something as one. And little twists of magic can be just plain fun for secretly backstabbing unsuspecting targets who seriously need it.

Agreed! Course, a well-played bard can do that too- and then write a song about it!! And whoever said they're no good in combat earlier, has obviously never seen me play mine... I think monks are way under-rated, too. There is so much you can do with one depending on how you build/play it.

Same here. I mean, fighter is cool, I admire their prowess, but he is reduced to fight only. Wizard is great, but he depends too much on his spells and someone who is completely immune to them is his bane. Specialising is good but vain at the same time. Why I must concentrate on battle if there won't be any? Seriously, in the age of absolute harmony and understanding fighters will be extinct.

With some planning you can overcome foes that no greatest warrior or wizard can overcome. For such people bard is created.Bard is someone, who must do all talk, patch up here and there, cast some useful spell here, singing ballad to raise spirit or annoy enemies all along. Basicaly, bard of epic level is omnipotent, master of all and nothing.

Too bad that I don't have enough diplomacy to persuade harpers of letting me join them, ignoring my half-drow heritage.

Now, I'm leaning toward Warlock or Rogue for 4th Edition...and trying really hard to like the new rules; but nearly three decades as a wizard player is making it hard to do!

Really? I LOVE the new rules... Pathfinder rocks!

My favourite class... okay, let's go edition-by-edition here...

1E: Ranger or Wizard.

2E: Early: Fighter (Complete Fighter's Handbook FTW) or Wizard

2E: Late: Ranger (Complete Ranger's Handbook FTW!) or Wizard

3.0: Fighter or Wizard; sorcerers are cool too, but metamagic feats make wizards somewhat superior imho (and I know there will be others who disagree on this).

3.5: Barbarian, Fighter, Ranger or Wizard; same thing for sorcerers as 3.0; UA gestalt Bbn/Rgr (no spells) FTW!

4E: What's the difference? Seriously: From what little we played before switching permanently back to 3.5/over to Pathfinder: Fighter or Ranger.

Pathfinder: Barbarian, Fighter, Paladin, Ranger, or Wizard; I always liked playing Paladins before, but Pathfinder made them brilliant! If I had to pick a single Pathfinder class, it would probably be Paladin, but Rangers and Barbarians will always make that a tough decision for me.

Playing in the Realms since the Old Grey Box (1987)... and *still* having fun with material published before 2008, despite the NDA'd lore.

If it's comparable in power with non-magical abilities, it's not magic.

I think that the Paladin and Bards are the ones that got the biggest boost with Pathfinder. Having the paladin's spellcasting be based off Charisma and the divine bond with their sword (instead of a career searching for a Holy Avenger) is brilliant. And the bard's versatile performance ability makes putting ranks in multiple Perform skills more engaging.

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

'Cause High Mages have a nasty habit of seeing through invisibility, IIRC. But they never expect you to escape with a coward's favorite 1st level spell. After all, who the heck uses kitschy base-level magic for outwitting epics? Like ninja don't expect you to throw a pillow into their face when they sneak up to your bed in the middle of the night. Easy, big guy! I was talking about mine. He's a full-blood drow bard, who would like nothing better than to see the so-called "Elven Homeland" he's heard so much about. Alas, even Eilistraeeans are still barred from there. I didn't even notice your avatar, to be honest.

Hey, Laer- you're right, of course, but don't they kinda have to suspect someone is even there before they start looking for Invis creatures? Exp Ret is still a good spell, though, but then again, so is Hideous Laughter- they'd be too busy rolling on the floor to chase after him!

Ok, this is not OT because it's part of what I love about a magic-using class ---all the little quirks of tactics besides judging terrain and positioning in combat (not to knock non-casters at all, they have their own forms of awesomeness, it's just my own preference for handling confrontations).

Don't High Mages have butt-kicking spell resistance (not to mention likely having all kinds of protective items or permanent spells on them)? Or is that just part of my friend's house rules that I've been playing by for a couple of years....In any case, in an emergency, never rely on targeting someone with a spell if you're pretty darn sure they're way more powerful than you . Especially if there are a lot of them fairly close. SR and saves suck when your enemy gets them. "Target: You" is the way to go. And I was talking about how to escape if you went in as a mechanized stuffed drow life-size music box . They'd already see you before you went invisible.

Crap like that gave my first long-term DM headaches....but made for some really fun gaming for us all, lol.

True enough! But I'd HOPE the performance would be good enough to fool them. If not... Grovel at their feet blubbering like a baby and hope they feel embarrassed enough at being hoodwinked to let you go without anyone else finding out.... Diplomacy and bluff- two of a bard's best friends.... They've gotten me out of more than one mess, that's for sure!

I am sorry, my lady, please accept my apologies for such outburst. I hope our characters will meet one day. The truth is I believe, that there is alternative world, that uses the energy of minds to give flesh to our fantasies (like Outer planes). In that world the characters we created are living their lives freely, almost like in some old book, based on D&D about magic playboard and players, who created their characters, and unadvertendly gave them lives in their played world. Their characters one time contacted them, when one of the DMs created some kind of Elder Evil creature. I'm searching for this book on english, but I can't remember the title.
Well, the moral is - keep your characters, they are not just some shells or your imagination. They are beings with your essence.

There has been a LOT of fiction in the last five or six decades that portrayed elves as everything from 'superiority-complexed snobs' to outright genocidal rascists.

Looking at just Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms fiction, many of the elves of Krynn and Faerūn believe they are superior to the other races due to their long lives and longer racial memories. I'm not going to start the who racism argument here (put down the stick, Wooly) because it's been done over and over and OVER again on every forum that exists. But many authors portray that some elves interact with the other races like 'adults interacting with children'.

I actually DO know everything. I just have a very poor index of my knowledge.

Well, I don't see most of them as being actively racist, but as Ashe said, they do tend to have a slightly condecending attitude toward most other races, with the possible exception of dwarves, who they seem to see as equal, but odd. I was simply stating that as of the latest canon I am aware of, the Mythal that protects Evermeet currently bars ALL drow from entering, or was supposed to, regardless of their actual alignment or faith. Thus, any elf of drow blood full or half) would be unable to go there, at least up to the invasion that occured in Cunningham's book Evermeet. some apparently came up from tunnels below the island, but those were collapsed after the invaders were repeled. Queen Amlaruil was supposed to be negotiating with some of Eilistraee's followers to bend the restriction, but I don't know if that ever came about.

I'm not familiar with the book you mentioned, but it sounds like a theory of mine that everything ever imagined or created in fiction is real in some other world/dimention/reality (call it what you will) and we simply tap into those other worlds when we dream something up, be it comic-book heroes, fantasy characters, or what-have-you. But if that's the case, then my characters would likely wish to have words with me over some of the things that I've put them through! (A certain young bard and a mutant teen hero would probably be the first to complain...)
