Hey, oddly enough I got an idea that I wanted to try with Paint3d. Basically, I can't draw worth a damn. I had an STL file though of an axebeak that was being given out for free. So, I opened the axebeak.stl file in paint3d. I then painted it, spun it to the angle I wanted, took a screenshot with snip, and then opened up the jpg file in paint.net and used the magic want to remove the background and base. I don't think it turned out too bad (link below to the PNG file).
https://drive.google.com/file/d/12hoW_buzfQXc087yp901Xc2rIuUjq7eK/view?usp=sharing
So, I was thinking how easy that was, and I thought... just for grins, anyone know of any other good sites with some D&D minis as STL's where the STL is a solid single piece? Or does anyone more familiar with 3d object making know how to break an stl down into component pieces (i.e. if I had for instance a cat man whose tail was separate to make the tale as a separate file, so that I could theoretically bring in both into a program and put them together, and then resave the stl file).
I was honestly thinking about making some pretty simple things (hopefully), like a tressym, a al-mi'raj, etc... from everyday components and intermixing stl files and then painting them in paint3d. To be clear, my knowledge of 3d manipulation is practically zilch, but hey, only way to learn is to play around.

That is pretty cool!
I don't have any information to help you though...but I do think it is really neat. |

I refound this guy, who is doing 3d images for printing minis of D&D 5e drawings that are 2d. I believe he's where I got the axebeak from. He distributes the 3d models for free (he is looking for patreon people to pay him monthly like $1 or $5 or $10... which I'm considering just to get access to his share drive, as downloading these individually is time consuming...)
https://www.shapeways.com/designer/mz4250/creations?s=288#more-products
Just for grins, I did another. This time I did an elf female ranger.

While it definitely LOOKS like a painted mini and not an artists drawing, I think I could use that. I wish I could paint faces better, and the flesh tone is just a little too pale for me (guess I need to figure out the right color and write down the numbers for red, blue, green, etc... for the future). Still, my end goal here is to simply make symbols of creatures that I can put on a map, so they won't be huge anyway. I just can't find say a "cat person" or a "zebrataur", etc... outside of the handful of things I've found online.
I'm really looking for oddly... a tressym, an al-mi'raj, a faerie dragon, and a hummingbird... and some mouse and squirrel folk. I have this picture in my head of a mouse folk riding a rampant al-mi'raj, bow in hand and drawn back, while a cobra moves in to strike and the al-mi'raj's horn threatens to pierce it like a lance.

actually, I didn't know about desktophero3d, so thank you. I've just barely nicked this side of things, as I bought a 3d printer on the cheap a few years ago and was not impressed with its quality. However, it wasn't until recently that I started realizing that there may be something to do besides printing out the minis in real form. I literally just turned my fiancé's daughter onto 3d painting today by downloading a "cat lord" of a cat on a throne and challenging her to a virtual painting contest (her mother to decide the winner after dinner) |

DesktopHero3d has a beta version which brings it close to Hero Forge quality, but it's been in beta since spring. I really hope it would get released because those models look so much better.

Ok, I went a little crazy hunting on thingiverse, but I found some good models. I gotta say, I do like this paint3d program, even though its pretty basic. I took about an hour to draw up this zebrataur cleric of Lurue. I was able to add stickers from a symbol of Lurue that someone was fanmade and shared freely, and another of a pegasi that I had. I think it dressed it up pretty good.

Yeah. Thingiverse is amazing. I found and printed tons of stuff.
I have mostly Star Wars stuff added to my collection. But if you want to browse my favorites, you can check them out at https://www.thingiverse.com/jamesewelch/collections
I have Fantasy Minatures and Fantasy Buildings collections, which has all of my favorite D&D items. |

Yeah, I'm seeing where putting multiple things together might make it useful to make a scene that you then can color. For instance, I can see putting a building behind a character, or some plant, or another creature attacking it. That's one weakness I'm seeing in paint3d, I can't add additional stl's together. I tried downloading blender, but it didn't load correctly. Is there a good, cheap/free 3d software for working with STL's for doing basic mods (chopping out a weapon, changing it, putting 2 STL's together, etc..). I see some people talking about something called maya.
And just to keep this interesting for anyone else wandering in dark skinned zebrataur male with sun fetish. After painting in paint3d and saving as a png, had to fix his fingers in paint.net as the 3d model wasn't great.

by the way, the things I want to do next are some "native American" inspired centaurs with paint horse "bodies". I'd love to know how to add feathers, a mohawk, etc... onto a model.

Blender is probably best and the most recommended. However, I find it's way too complicated/technical for me to use. If you can export your files to transparent PNG format, then you can just layer them on top of each other for simple scenes. Or maybe photoshop the items together, but that requires getting all of the items to the perfect tilt/angle/rotation, etc. |

Ok, I had problems installing blender on ONE computer. I went ahead and tried it on another and it was a breeze. I'm not sure what happened on the one. Watched a video on how to break apart components to take the base off a mousefolk, combined it with a rabbit model and a unicorn horn model to make
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4010248
The one thing I wish I could figure out is how to "flip horizontal" on a model (i.e. not rotate 180 degrees, but rather "point" it facing the other direction without turning around). The reason being I would have liked having the mousefolk aiming his arrow in the same direction the rabbit is looking. Still, I don't think its bad for my first make.
Here's the painted versions from 2 different viewpoints

Blender file formats are best, in my opinion. Because (almost) every 3D modelling software and 3D rendering engine can import, export, or convert standard Blender objects.
Solidworks or Autodesk are far more powerful and versatile, especially with complex geometries derived from MATLAB functions, etc. But they're overkill and Blender is better for stuff like low-detail custom dice or semi-detailed custom figs.
A lot of "opensource" models are shameless ripoffs of commerical, licensed, or patented designs - don't be fooled by the licensing claims they append to their (copied or scanned) models. And some gaming communities/events (like Warhammer 40K) have strict banning policies on "unofficial" figs being used in their games. |

yeah, I'm starting to see a lot of that (wherein they scanned in He-Man for instance). I'm trying to stay away from anything I know to be a blatant ripoff, and I'm hoping a lot of these animal shapes are safe (especially if all I'm doing is taking the face or a claw and then deforming even that, etc...). Copyright is my one big worry, and thus I was glad to see this one guy who put out some basic animal shapes out.
My original reason for messing with this though was simply to make PNG files of things that are in my head that I can't draw with a pencil or in paint. I've then been painting them in windows paint3d, well because its simple. I've also been using this to become closer to my fiancé's daughter a little more (we fight... (she's almost entering teen years and developing "you're not my daddy" awareness, despite the fact I've helped raise her for 7.5 of her 11 years), in that I can give her something I made and we can have a "paint-off" to see who makes a better version. As you can tell from this thread, I'm a literal newb when it comes to this stuff, so is there anything you would recommend looking into (some videos that are good maybe). Were it not for MZ4250 (Miguel Zavala) for instance making a simple video detailing how to cut a mini into pieces for printing, I never would have figured that out. |
