Jhesendryl (LN HM War3/T1)
"Blind Jhesen." A hiresword once famed for his part in plundering the Netherese ruin known as Benduvhael's Crypt. Lost the use of his eyes in an unsanctioned duel with the noble Venzan Margaster. He now earns coin begging in the Court of the White Bull, and runs errands for Bhellummus, the Night Master of the kitchens of New Olamn. Usually keeps company with the alley-cats Celaunta ("Blue-Tail") and Viirth ("Silent-Eyes"). A confidant of the gnome Lustral Blackalbane.

Jhessae "Jhesshawk" Spanglefoot (CG HaF [Tallfellow] P of Mielikki)
Long-Walker, Blackthistle (for the bristly, untamed and uncombed tangle of dark hair that perches atop her head). Black-haired, hook-nosed and hawk-eyed. Smiles and scowls with equal ease. Known to most within the hin community surrounding Snail Street; when in the city prefers long, quiet fireside puffs on her pipe and long, thorough ilabbask ("littledagger," acupuncture) southern foot massages. Has no patience for fools or authorities (indeed, believes them to be one and the same). Often flips loose coin and candies to little hinlings who come seeking her. Still the only halfling female to play the part of Old Carvas (a human gift-giving tradition increasingly co-opted by the Hin of the city) during the winter celebrations. "Grey mentor" (godparent) to Jhessadail Bramblebranch and inspiration for the Blackthistles, an enthusiastic fellowship of seven young halflings of both sexes who have pledged their swords and promised to one day range into the wilds with her.

Jhuln "Longworm"
A Dock Ward banner (male prostitute) and occasional bullyblade for local debt-collectors. Sharp nose and chin, once finely-toned body now softened by age and drink. Named for a rather impressive endowment, which keeps him in coin despite his fading looks. Works the alleys of the Ward and at the Mermaid's Arms. Lover of the festhall downdancer Tasseled Trintha.

Jhundeene
The Junhydra. The feared mage-assassin of the Gildeggh family. Tall and gaunt. Shrouded in heavy cloaks and robes over silvered chainmail. Wore a featureless metal facemask seized from one of the Hidden Lords she slew during the rise of the Lords-Magister. Her title came from the many certain deaths that she returned from (feats aided by a ring of regeneration and certain contingency magics). Wielded The Assassin's Blade, an enchanted sword that functioned similarly to a mirror of life-trapping. The Assassin's Blade was lost during the duel against the swordsmen Durnan and Baeron that led to the Junhydra's final doom, and was never recovered. It is still believed to hold the souls of several of her victims, including the Masked Lords Thereldoon and Barunhelm, the mage Alethcanter, and Mirsthann "The Bloody," first cousin of Ehlemm Zoar.

Jhusper Jamblejack (NG HaM Ra4)
A (largely retired) member of the Shields of Snail Street adventuring fellowship. Hails from Hawthorne Hedge, a small hamlet centered around a fortified temple of Cyrrollalee in the Purple Hills of Tethyr. He now makes a living as a caravan outrider for the Six Coffers Market Priakos. Keeps a room at Luthlannan's Lamp, a boarding house off of Melinter's Court.

Lanny's Lass? Sung to the tune of Danny's Girl?

Anne Murray? I had to look it up. I never knew that was the name of that song. Better that than Jesse's Girl, I suppose. Also, I should have wrote "folk songs" instead of "limericks."

==================================================

Dzavar Brazenbold (CN HM T4/P2 of Tymora)
One half (along with the dwarf Feldroon Boldhammer) of the "Bold Brigands," a well-known pair of local ne'er-do-wells, rakehells, and Harper-friends. Swift-tongued, charismatic, darkly handsome. Lost his right hand (and half a forearm) to The Devil's Lacunae, an intelligent sphere of annihilation, in the sewers under the ruins of spell-sundered Ascore. Wields the blade Ansarash (ONN-sah-rash), "The Tooth of Winter."

Feldroon Boldhammer (CG DM F5)
One half (along with the thief-priest Dzavar Brazenbold) of the "Bold Brigands," a well-known pair of local ne'er-do-wells, rakehells, and Harper-friends. Auburn hair (braided in back and oiled, forked beard in front), predatory gap-toothed grin. Warm-hearted, quick to anger, equally quick to forgive. Master of off-color Dock Ward chanties and limericks, and roars the dirtiest ones at the top of his lungs when in combat.

Dzharast the Red
Malarite lord who led a doomed war of rebellion against the Duke of Calandor. After his final defeat at the Battle of the Brightspar he submitted his loyalists, on condition that their lives be spared and surrendered his horn, which summoned fear and terror and the things that hunt in the night (afterwards known as the Harrying Horn of Calandor). As for Dzharast himself, he declared that he would not live caged and cowered, and then threw himself into the surrounding ring of the Duke's armsmen, where he died what is deemed as an honorable death by those of his faith. His surrender is famously depicted in Dzharast Bending the Knee, the great painting which currently hangs in the Greeting Hall of House Cassalantar.

Dzijadah el Sūneh
"Brighteyes." Lush-figured, long dark untamed hair. Confident and arrogant, occasionally startlingly cruel. An infamous cantatrice (an accomplished female singer, often a soloist). Caused a minor scandal in highborn circles when she was discovered engaging in illegal street races with her stallion Sweet Silver (gray, fast, and fearless in jumping). Persistant rumor claims she is a were-dragon or other shapeshifter.

Dzunbril Tsharthros (LE HM Aris3/W9)
A recent arrival to the city. Dzunbril claims to have been unfairly exiled from Turmish by enemies of a rival noble house. He has set up his household in a Sea Ward villa, and seems determined to buy or curry favor with as many of the city's highborns as possible, for some unknown agenda. His sharp, handsome features and forked, well-oiled beard have caused quite a commotion among the noble ladies of the city, but many whisper his charming manner hides an arrogant and scheming (and quite magically adept) nature.

The Saltwrack
Ancient legends speak of an offspring of Umberlee, born unwanted and drowned, which pulled itself to the surface and to sentience. Where Umberlee demanded men fear her and sent killing waves against them, the Saltwrack sent them visions of vast schools of fish and rainbow shoals and said, Come to me, Come to me. When Umberlee raged and tossed and tore at the puny wooden vessels men made to ride upon her flanks, the Saltwrack sang of distant verdant shores and treasures unknown, and said, Come to me, Come to me. And men heeded this siren song, and the aequoreal fiend grew evermore powerful.

So powerful, in fact, that Pelagial Umberlee grew afraid, and in her desperation turned to an unlikely ally for succor; the overwatching moon-goddess Selūne, Bright and Shining. And Selūne in turn wrought a guarantee from Umberlee; as payment for dealing with her wayward offspring, the Bitch-Queen of the Ocean Blue would temper her furies and suffer men of sufficient strength and courage to ride upon her tempestuous back.

And so, the bargain struck, Selūne used her waxing flanks to blind the Saltwrack, and her waning crescents to spear its' flesh with her hook'd heavenly barbs. And the Saltwrack was brought low and brought to heel, and then imprisoned in the depths of a far lake of molten silver and starstuff. And Umberlee upheld her bargain, and thus began the great Age of Sail, as heroes such as Valkur Wave-Sailor, and Talaphan and Balduran and Helm Hard Alee all took to the seas. But it is said that the drowned and deposed demon still stirs restlessly from its' godly prison, whispering to men in their discontent and slumber, and singing Come to me, Come to me.

Sammar Grevenglaive (LN HM F)
An Entever (captain) of the Sacred Swords (the religious order tasked with defending the doors of the House of Heroes). Has green eyes, a crooked nose, and a lion-like mane of golden hair. Confident in his own abilities (sometimes to the point of making impetuous duels or challenges), and condescending to anyone outside of the Tempusan heirarchy (even members of other martial orders). He bears the Bright Star Shield, a +3 Elembaran relic which can be commanded to emit a bluish-white glow (illumination equal to lantern light); to disrupt both infravision and ultravision on all who view it within a 120' radius; and, in the hands of a true adherent of Tempus, to bring forth holy radiance that acts as a mace of disruption, 3x/day.

Sammardoun Hearthsfire
A dwarven "hearthmaster" (hire-chef). Currently in service to the kitchens of the Brossfeather noble clan. Fond of brandishing a meat cleaver in one hand, and a heavily-engraved hornwood pipe in the other. Married to (and constantly browbeaten by) Haegara Hearthsfire (LN DF Sor3), a universally-acclaimed "many-mouthed, dark-eyed, thunder-voiced witch." His most noted cookery achievement is a "phoenix egg," an oversized ovular shell enchanted by his wife to burst into flame and sparkling pyrotechnics, revealing multicolored sugary pastries stacked within.

Sammur Binglebelt
A founding member of the Shields of Snail Street adventuring fellowship and prolific author (his 1354DR mystery The Seaswealth Tale is still one of the most popular chapbooks in the city). Also wrote the (slightly true) memoir An Adventure of Consequence (1349DR) and its (mostly true) follow-up An Unpleasant Encounter (1353DR), the latter of which was full of thinly-veiled references to the doings and plottings of the city nobility, and most likely led to his suspicious death in 1355DR.

Sammwish Hornbuckle
Hin author of As I Heard Them (1337DR) a collection of wise sayings and ruminations on the nature of life. "Always take what favor the gods send, when they send it. 'Tis unsafe to wait a second offer."

"Hardcoin" Hobondur
Waterdhavian commander during the Dragonspear War. Named for his miserly spending on equipment and supplies, and his fierce forced marches. Died on the end of a bone devil's spear when the infernal forces overran the Waterdhavian encampment at Twaybridge.

Hargauth of Amn
The Hell-Roarer. A renowned martialist at the Field of Triumph. Held a record of 21-4-9 (the number nine denoting draws, including a singularly epic bout against Narimdra "the Gold Tiger" of Tharsult) before retiring. These days, "Hell Roaring" Hargauth draws coin as a fighting instructor at the Field, and from a lifetime stipend paid for by the church of Tempus.

Hargham the Tusked
A battle-blade of Tempus. Tall, heavily-built. Deeply-lined face, high forehead. Bald head, bushy eyebrows, snub nose. Wears a suit of Tethan platemail with a great helm fashioned in the shape of a tusked boar's head (platemail +1, bulls strength 1x/day). Last fought for the First Speaker of Nesmé against Uthgardt raiders; currently considering either an offer for training the Loudwater "gauntlets," or some manner of banditry along the Delimbiyr Vale.

Harglum Hommorhorn
Gnomish stonweworker. Proprietor of Hommorhorn's Masterful Carvings and Stone Finework (Trades Ward). Produces and sells a variety of cosmetic stonework; carved stone 'beast-face' downspouts; lintels and arches framed with etched climbing vines or repeating 'monster-and-slayers' friezes; and fenceposts topped with ornate points or orbs or family crests (not the fences themselves though, those must be contracted elsewhere – perhaps with his good friend, the human stoneworker Sarelgus Dhemmurth, three doors down). Aided by two sons and a daughter, and three additional apprentices (two humans and a dwarf, Athalda Strongmallet – one of the rare dwarves who would actually deign to be taught stonecrafting by a gnome).

Hargrim Hammersready
Half-drunk bullyblade. Well known in Black Well Court. Accosts passerby, threatens them with violence if they refuse his contest-of-arms. Usually accompanied by several street urchins who make cat-calls and lewd suggestions to any women who pass by.

Harkyl the Ghosteye
Career sellsword and mercinary captain. Died at Dragonspear Castle. Author of The Armsmen (1340DR), a well-regarded self-accounting of mercinary life and general warfare in the Western Heartlands. "Where gold compels, steel complies."

Black Salt
Norvaeld Blaeburn, lifelong seasman and former factor of both Houses Adarbrent and Stormweather. Foremost of Elaith Craulnober's purveyors (factors) on the Docks. Chubby, pug face. Keen dark eyes. Bow-legged, wispy, sparse black hair. Aloof, private. Prides himself on knowing exactly what each ship in the harbor contains (both publicly and furtively). Has long maintained a delicate dance of both alliance and enmity with Ilgathos, the Xanathar's Dock Ward "Collector of Coins."

Black Sharn
Legendary large, black-furred, single-eyed crag cat. Source of much outlandish rumor and taverntattle. Roams the Evermoors. Unusually intelligent (even by Hunter-of-Men standards), emits an aura of dragonfear. Victims are either killed or said to be marked for future doom.

Black Skarn
Mercinary sellsword. Abandoned his given name, Auglorn Saersmith, long ago. His fellow hireswords named him "Skarn," after the vicious biting flies. Tall, broad-shouldered, big-fisted, deep-voiced. Calm and patient demeanor, but displays great savagery and bloodlust when in combat.

The Blackfalcon Raiders
A mercinary company active in the North, with offices on Tulmaster's Street, at the Sign of the Blackfalcon. In recent years the Blackfalcons, led by the ex-Flaming Fist Ghaundar Immelrune, have made a name for themselves in the competitive world of mercinary bands. Although they are a small company, numbering no more than 50 souls at most, they are all hand-picked by Ghaundar for their experience and talents, and have defeated armies many times their size. The Blackfalcons are all experienced woodsmen, and know much of the North intimately. Individual members can be hired out for caravan duty or bounty hunting, but they do not work cheaply. Members include the "Second Shield" (lieutenant) Sundar Coppershield; and the captains Bambhros "Broad-Axe," Lunathan Left-Handed and Horrelth the Black.

Ghaundar Immelrune (LN HM F12)
Commander of the Blackfalcon Raiders (a mercinary company active in the North, with offices on Tulmaster's Street, at the Sign of the Blackfalcon). Formerly a veteran of the Flaming Fist company out of Baldur's Gate. A short, thick-set man with dark, wiry hair. Mostly mild and even-tempered, but dangerous nonetheless. Ghaundar is an experienced woodsman and tireless tracker, and when not on commission prefers to spend his time deep in the wilds of the North, hunting both beast and monster.

The Blacksaddle Club
A moneyed gathering of horse-fanciers and horse-racers. Wager great sums on the outcomes of Field races and street-challenges alike. Members favor steeds over riders, but some rank among the prominent financiers of brightlances (professional jousters) in the city. Proudly display the weathered black saddle of the famous warhorse The Great Shalarn over the club mantle. The Old Leather (elected chairperson) of the Saddlers is Hlundar Eagleshield, overlarge and overproud, who clings to his position like he clings to his swaying saddle.

"Night-Eyed" Narvaeous
A senior member of the Watchful Order (holds the office of Accomplished Master of Divinations). Dark eyes, angular face. Tense, excitable. Never seems to know how to end a line of conversation, either trailing into silence mid-sentence or suddenly ending at an abrupt and uncomfortable stop.

Nilmrara Nlaen
"The Mistress of Many Spells and the Conjuress of Cunning Magics." South Ward copper-caster (hedge-mage), bone-roller (diviner) and number-knower (for the low-coin lotteries). Her professional epithet is far grander than her magical acumen. Short, round-faced. Dark-haired and dark-eyed. Full belly and full red lips. Has the feline Bluespangle (a grey shorthair with bluish marks similar to the star-circle of Mystra on his left flank) as a familiar.

Nimshoar the Unyielding
Figure of myth and legend in the North. (Excerpted from Balaethra's The Last Days of Illusk of Old) "One of the Nine Vengeances of Tempus, crafted from the spears and blades of fallen heroes by Tempus himself. Nimshoar strode the lands of the North, meting out battle and slaughter aplenty, until it met it's eventual doom off the frozen winter shores nigh Port Llast. The ambuate metal horror was lured into the roiling sea there by the clever Ruathym thane Orbraul and struck by a hundred hundred lances of lightning called endlessly down by the gathered Ruathymaar war shamans, whereupon it gave out a mighty metallic shriek loud enough to rattle the heavens and sunk into the icy depths, never to re-emerge. It is said that Tempus later punished Orbraul for his effrontery by causing all seven of his sons to be born with weak and deformed sword-arms, rendering them incapable of challenging for thaneships; but that Orbraul got the last laugh by teaching his only daughter, the shieldmaiden Anyrissa, to fight and sail better than any man, and so she became famed in her time as one of the most feared raiding thanes of that sea-girt nation."

Nulaundjas the Once-Tempered (N HM Exp)
Noted Amnian "hearthmaster" (hire-chef). Deeply lined and bronzed face framing a pair of deep-set blue eyes. Thick mane of iron-grey hair. Expressive, overbearing and bombastic in the kitchen and in personal settings; otherwise utterly professional and highly tolerant of the ever-shifting whims of his noble patrons. Much sought-after in highcoin circles for his cookery skills at balls and other parties. The social and professional rival of Summa Tlambusk.

Nurlalae Wands
A noble of House Wands. Better known as Nurlalae of the Blazing Eyes. Faced down and single-handedly slew a greater demon at the cost of her own life. The song Blue Eyes Ablazing, written by the bard Rondaglur, tells of how she was infused with the goddess Mystra's power to the point of her eyes literally trailing tears of blue fire and her blade combusting in deific vengeance.

Hmmmm, I like this idea of the phoenix egg. It doesn't even have to be a real fire. It could be a modified version of faerie fire or continual flame. But what this really brings to mind is what kind of simple things could be done with magic for rich noble kids birthdays or other kinds of parties. For instance, I never would have thought about it before, but a magic mouth that sings happy birthday (the mouth appearing at the bottom of a cake tray and activating when it gets within range of the birthday person) would be a simple and fun surprise. Also, since its a ritual and a spell known to bards... I can see good singers who are fledgling bards being able to do this for a relative pittance. This might be a common thing at ANY party to be able to have a short song sung. Hell, you could even trigger one magic mouth to occur after another stops for a longer song (note the birthday song falls within the 25 word range), and since its a ritual that just means it takes a bit longer to record.

But, what else might be done besides singing? Well, why not a scavenger hunt? What about a riddle contest? It could add some interesting things because they can't ask someone to repeat what was said, etc...

Alavairthae, may your skill prevail

I know Ed has said repeatedly in the past that the Realms are full of little "everyday" enchantments, but in a game about fireballs and teleportation and killing monsters, they're not the type of thing sells supplements and so don't recieve the same coverage. But I can easily see a "more-gold-than-the-gods" noble shelling out for such activities. And don't forget the pony unicorn rides (or unicorn-horned giant space hamster rides, for the plebs who can't afford the real thing).

Yeah, it doesn't sell it in supplements... but, it would sell it in novels, short stories, or even introductions on supplements written in story form (like what Mystara stuff, some of the early realms sources, etc... with different "people" talking about their portion of the realms). It would be one of those things that makes readers go "hmmm, that's interesting". Maybe I'm odd in this, but that was always something I found really interesting in novels was seeing them use spells in a weird way OR also seeing them actually use spells in such a way that you can tell what's actually going on in a duel, etc...

Oh, and good point on the unicorn rides... horses with illusory unicorn horns would be relatively easy to make, and children tend to "believe" (i.e. easter bunny... santa… etc....). In fact, some parents may consider this a way to train their children to learn to see through such.

Hmmm, all of which makes me realize you've just given me a good alternative "introduction story" for my tharch of Luneira. I'd been thinking about having it be from the viewpoint of a visitor arriving on a Quad of Thay to this former Netherese enclave sitting amongst the Tears of Selune. However, I like the idea of showing it from the viewpoint of a daughter of Mythrell'aa having a birthday party for a granddaughter of Mythrell'aa. With colored pegacorns in the sky... and bat winged fluffy kittens that explode upon death (a variation on darkenbeasts)…. well, maybe not actually that, but I'm looking to make the place the equivalent of "evil girl who likes pink makes her own realm".

Well, you could start small (relatively speaking) at the birthday party in the first chapter (or section), and then "zoom out" to a grand overview from a ship-board character to open the second.

==================================================

Rosk Toghruul (NE ½OM T2)
"Grudgecoin" (moneylender), pawnbroker. Short, burly, sullen-looking. A contact for the Highfang Handlers, breeders of strong-jawed guard dogs (the type utilized by many merchants of Trades and South Wards), located northeast of Amphail. Roszaeba "Bearded Rosie" Orblenhammer
Ink-Hound, Mother-of-Scandals. A stout dwarven woman with a round, cheerful face and shrewd eyes. Blunt, open, truthful. A keen observer and a notorious gossip. Self-described "Teller of Truths and Trader of Tales" (or, "The foremost publisher of love garlands, merriments, common ballads, street drolleries, squibs, divers 'bright-words,' histories true and faithful, comic tales in prose and verse, political litanies, dialogues, dying speeches and confessions, high fanfaronade and a variety of 'ballads on a subject'"). Offices (better described as holding court in her comfortably-appointed parlor) on Scroll Street, Trades Ward. Believed to act as editor or financier of no less than a dozen of the city's most-read broadsheets.

Rovard
Tall, lean, sallow. Long, straight black hair, and dark eyes. Owner of The Well-Directed Thrust, a small-swords (fencing and general swordfighting) school in a tallhouse loft in North Ward. Teaches what he calls the "Seventeen Skillful Movements" of swordplay. Does not accept female students.

Ruby Tsavva

A Preparation for Every Situation"), on the Brightsquares (southern) end of the Market. Trades on the garish colors of her wares ("Aye, 'tis honest truth, the brighter the hue, the more it catches the favors of the Gods – and the opposite sex!") and the greatly-faded memory of her time as a highly-regarded festhall dancer. Very fat, dark brown complexion, plenty of dark crinkly hair kept swept back under outlandish headscarves. Good-humored gray eyes under heavy eyebrows. Garrulous, restless, inquisitive.

Ryn Sulbrinter
Former Ward Civilar of North Ward (1359 - 1365DR). Imprisoned after being accused of embezzelling and of using his position to ruin various political enemies. Some whisper that the charges were false, trumped up by influential friends of Emmer Jundhyl, his successor as Ward Civilar.

Tandelūme Three-Spells
Native of Silverymoon. Shoulder-length wavy brown hair. Wide green eyes, freckles across both cheeks, pug nose. Six-toed on both feet. Mixes elven words and phrases into her conversation when excited or wanting to add emphasis to a particular point. Bustling, eager, hastening. Treats each thing as a new adventure to be experienced in breathless wonder. Has a familiar, Smralae, a small, grey-blue, lightly-spangled cat which shares her green eyes. Knows the secrets of preparing archon stones (Blue John, fluorspar) to glow with faint greenish radiance if magically invisible (not disguised or ethereal) objects or creatures come within a dozen paces of it. Kept in ready coin by noble and wealthy interests.

Tannath Delshimmer (CN HM F10/T4)
Former Ward Civilar of Dock Ward (1346 - 1352DR) and advisor to Lord Piergeiron. Currently Seamaster (captain) of the privateer caravel Maethiira's Glory. Tannath is famed in the lands along the Trackless Sea for his hot temper, love of fiery dwarven spirits, and deadly blade. He named his ship after Maethiira, the now-deceased wife of the Paladinson, whom he fell madly in love with after a meeting at a noble ball. It is whispered that her death led to a falling out between the two men and drove Tannath to sea, but he refuses to discuss this part of his past. Every winter the Glory is refitted in Llandrian, on Snowdown Isle in the Moonshaes, where Tannath's men have roots in the community and are considered local heroes. In addition to his skill with a blade, the Captain has a talent for epic poetry and ballads, as evinced by such well-recieved works as "The Battle Ne'er Done" and "Old Warriors Walk Unseen."

Taol "Great Tar"
Fat, bearded. Has a missing front tooth and a nasty gash in his upper lip to go along with it. No morals, and a vicious streak when angered or drunk. Master (captain) of the Star-Eyed Selkie, a free caravel easily identified by the titular eyes vividly painted on the sides of the bow.

Tappalt Fluryn
A long-time caravan master of the Thousandheads Coster. Wrote the memoir Bound in Bela: A Life on The Tradeway (1357DR).

Tarathlara the Old Bramble
The Quiet Song of Silvanus. Author of A Dappled Glade My Home: My Forty-Year Conversation With the Oak-Tree Aragnorl (1094DR). "What few of the sentient races care to admit is that the stories of risen realms have always been inextricably bound up with the stories of fallen trees."

Targreave Tantalthorne (LG HM Pal of Torm)
A Wing Civilar (commander) of the Griffon Guard (Gold Wing). Has red hair, a huge red moustache and fierce red-brown eyes. Forthright, honest. Simple of speech and deed. Has a great fascination with elven song and poetry (and women). Rides the griffon named Copper King.

I like him as a fighter/bard instead of fighter/thief. Putting 6 levels in in 5e might have him stopping the songs of sirens who try to have his ship dashed on rocks, but 4 levels makes sense as well. Having his early life be as a bard, until Maethiira's death turns him more melancholy. Picturing him as a "college of swords" bard combined with an "eldritch knight" fighter for 5e and fighting with a scimitar at sea and fighting with cantrips (such as vicious mockery or an wizard attack cantrip) and attacks (or using his eldritch strike and then casting a bardic charm on someone). Doing this with maybe the warcaster and/or defensive duelist feat. Might even do dual weapon fighting. Have him focused on dexterity, but decent int/charisma enough to use his spells.

Actually, taking away a few of those levels spent in fighter/eldritch knight and sticking them into rogue as well could maybe be interesting. So, something like bard 4, rogue 4, fighter 7. then having him in the rogue class go arcane trickster. This would net him a decent number of very low level spells and a lot of cantrips and some trickery with mage hand.

All interesting ideas. I originally chose fighter due to his career in the Watch; thief to represent his "going rogue" (if you'll excuse the pun) afterwards. I do agree bard could be a better fit, though I don't imagine him much as a spellcaster. This was early 2E, before the Bards Handbook; I think there were kits in there that might have fit him also. And, his original alignment wasn't Chaotic Neutral, that changed when he went a'sea as well.

==================================================

Delimbyr Ilmdusk (CN HM SP of Leira)
Master of The Words That Mean Nothing. Short, burly, wart-covered. Garrulous and amiable. Has a way of drawing information, no matter how private or embarrassing, out of even the most guarded persons through what seems like simple, friendly chatter. One of his "warts" on his neck is actually an embedded item that functions similar to a pink-and-green ioun stone (+2 to Charisma, bringing his score to 19). "Words often mean nothing. But many of those same words also hold indelible power. None more so than fripperies like 'love,' 'trust,' 'honor,' 'promise.' When you master those, only then do you truly master those around you."

Deljassa "the Black Vise" (LE HF P3 of Loviatar) and Ilph "the Blood Jester" (LE HM F4)
Two particularly ardent faithful of the goddess Loviatar. The Vise and the Jester are well-known in certain underground establishments and jaded noble circles, where they are often hired to participate in cruel, masochistic parties. They are both habitually shrouded from head to foot in shimmering black robes (to conceal the mass of scars that cover their bodies, most whisper), although both strip down to the barest of coverings when performing their work. They seem to be polar opposites, with Deljassa going about her business with a cold, silent demeanor, while Ilph is prone to wild gesticulations and howls along with the target of his administrations, but they are never separate from each other, and seem to make up part of one (disturbing) whole.

Delmarys "Wolfhound" Moonstar
A noble of House Moonstar [b.1270/d.1298]. Second child of Alathene Alūvae and Tavros Thundershield, twin brother of Dalenmal. Infected by a werewolf in 1288DR. Mastered his affliction and became an adherent of Selūne and a member of the Watch. Killed in fighting with the Shadow Thieves.

Delvyn Banbosk
A knight of Selūne, slain during the Battle of Waterdeep Harbor. His sword, the Brightblade of Analaena, was a relic of the faith. It was thought lost until disgorged from the sea and returned to the church in Uktar of 1371DR, during a grand ceremony presided over by the Umberlant Meritid Archneie.

Demondar Thrynn (LN HM F11/P3 of Tyr)
Knight-Commander of the Halls of Justice (the Waterdhavian temple of Tyr). A tall, broad-shouldered man of advancing years and piercing eyes. A master equestrian and hunting enthusiast. Not an especially good singer, but very fond of battle chants and religious hymns. Has a wife, Braegelda; three daughters, five sons (four of whom have been committed to the Sempiternal Judgement of Tyr), and a veritable host of grandchildren. Plans to retire soon to Hunting Hawk, a manor hold and Tyrran retreat he is establishing north of Red Larch.

==================================================

The Brightblade of Analaena
A Selūnite relic-of-the-faith. Once carried by the knight Delvyn Banbosk and lost for a time after his death during the Battle of Waterdeep Harbor. An everbright-treated longsword +2, with the powers of detect invisible (beings and objects outlined in cold, pearly light, at will), protection from evil 20'r (1x/day) and moonfire (1x/day).

I like Lifeday.... but yeah, Firstday really rings with me.

"Happy Firstday to you".... yeah, it even goes along with the simple song. May change it more...
"Merry Firstday to you,
Merry Firstday 'tis true,
Merry Firstday, Merry Firstday,
Merry Firstday, Anew"

Thank you Wooly.

I know I suggested Firstday, but I favor Lifeday, myself. I don't know that I've seen it in FR lore, but I've seen fantasy stuff that used Firstday to mark the first day of the week.

Well, that certainly wasn't a tangent I was expecting!

I don't have anything specific, but off the top of my head: given that the days of the week (err...tenday) don't have names or any seeming importance, I would think most folk of the Realms just abstract such things to "I was born twenty summers/winters ago" or "I was born in Marpenoth, of the Year of the Prince," or "I came into Faerūn on the third tenday of Uktar, the year that Lashan and his troops invaded," rather than specifying a particular day.

It may be a thing specific to your flavor of worship or station as well. Perhaps a Lathanderite was "brought into the light on Ches 12," a noble "was gilded on that auspicious day of Tarsakh 25."

(I like dazzlerdal's "firstday," as well)

There is a reference to birthdays in Ed Greenwood Presents Elminster's Forgotten Realms -- on page 58, referring to Azoun IV, it says "However, honoring him takes the form of remembrance festivals on the date of his birthday..."

That's the only reference I could find, but it does indicate that specific days are tracked, for birthdays -- at least by some. I'd imagine it could be both a regional thing and depend in part on the family. A farmer isn't going to need to recall much more than "born in early spring" while a noble is certainly going to have the exact date.

Some regions might do something like saying all birthdays fall on the first day of the month after the baby is born, or at the midpoint of the season, or something like that.

Lol, yeah, I got a tendency to skew topics. But this is a good point. Various cultures may have entirely different views on celebrating (or NOT celebrating) birthdays. That being said, I'm hereby staking a claim that Mulan people DO keep track of them, and they celebrate them somewhat similar to our own style.

SIDEBAR on that topic though: One of the things I'm doing with this is that Zulkir of Illusion, Mythrell'aa, will be known to always adjust her "firstday" to coincide with her youngest grandchild, and she shares her party with them. Given that she worships the goddess of illusions and lies (at least my version does.... screw the idea that she worships Shar that was listed just because someone assumed Leira was dead), she considers this a spontaneous form of mild worship.

Given all the people I've known who've lied about their age (kids at the bar, ladies "of a certain age") it amazes me that Leira was only a Lesser Power

Be aware that there are two contradictory birthdays [for Azoun] in published Realmslore. Ed's explanation for this is the English monarch's one: the Queen has an "official" birthday (public feasting and ceremonies) and her own, "real" birthday (celebrated in private seclusion with close family only).
Well, so did Azoun.

The Recrudescent Sons of Raurlor
Secret society, dedicated to Raurlor's dream of Waterdeep as an empire. Unlike all of their fellow Raurlor-cults, the Recrudescent Sons aim to form a confederation of willing (albeit lesser, subservient) allies, rather than a collection of conquered cities. They are also extremely xenophobic, and dream of using these united realms of Men to crush not only the goblinoids, but also all the other races of Demi-kind and not-Men.

The Red Echoes of Spices Street
Minor haunting or phantasmal apparition, Spices Street (Dock Ward), High Harvestide. The ghostly remnant of a squad of Guardsmen ambushed and enveloped by a vampiric crimson mist during the chaos of Halaster's Harvestide. The air in the immediate vicinity turns a dull, sullen red, as that of an early gloaming, and the clank of armed feet moving in the street can be heard echoing off the rowhouse facades. Passerby are affected with a chill raising of neck-hairs and goose-pimples. Those races with a keen sense of smell report an odor of iron and death.

The Red Hogshead
Upper-room Sea Ward club. Gourmands and gluttons. Gather to feast and vomit and feast further. Rare foods and delicacies only, of course. It is rumored that they engage in cannibalism; it is also rumored that they are hidden were-beasts. Neither of these are true. Well, not entirely.

The Red Roarers
Mercinary band. Middling status. Fronted by Taol Tobbfeather, the "Old Red Roar" (veteran armsman. Fiery-tempered, neatly-bearded. Rough humor, voice and manners).

Rednose Alley Footpads
A force of some two dozen cutpurses and alleyblades. Led by the Xanathar-man, Barrelgut. Based out of his shop on Tilman's Lane. Notable Members: Weftlyn Blackbutter.

Barrelgut (LE HM War4)
A small-time fence and "grudgecoin" (moneylender) in South Ward. As abdominous as his sobriquet suggets. Employed by the Xanathar. Commands the Rednose Alley Footpads, a force of some two dozen cutpurses and alleyblades, from his shop on Tilman's Lane.

Weftlyn Blackbutter (NE HaM T3)
Lithe, oily-haired, weasel-faced. Ill-tempered and impatient.Vicious and sadistic. Keeps a long list of offenders and enemies, enjoys telling others of his painful revenges upon them. A member of the alleyblades fellowship known as the Rednose Alley Footpads.

ECHOES in UNDERMOUNTAIN

(As you peer forth in the dim torchlight, you see something inscribed here upon the wall)

============================

Any who pass here
If you should see Roral in the sunshine above
Tell him Durblan says sabruin!

* *
All I seek, a little peace
A quiet turn, my strifing cease
No trick, no trap, no horrid yell
Just a moment, then back to hell.

* *
Gledrae Hothemer has the purple pox!

* *
Avenge he who lies here
fallen amid treachery
slay two foul dwarfs with coats of gold or I shall haunt thee!

(scrawled sloppily in blood)

* *
Bandul the Bold walked this way
Half past Midsummer
In the Year of the Gauntlet

* *
What the fish-men keep
The Watch will never find

* *
Eight men and two dwarf this way come
Eight men and two dwarf into the cookpot yum

(scrawled in Ogrish)

Knell the Black (LE HM War6)
Mercinary, earns coin as a "seaguard" (warrior carried aboard merchant ships to fight off pirate boarding parties and port thieves). A native of Iskandelve, Ruathym. Medium height and build. Knotted brow, constant sneer, chews (and spits) copious amounts of blackroot. Wears scale and horned helm, wields bastard sword and pikestaff.

The Knights of Palisaded Selūne
The Palisaded Order, The Argent Shield. A militant order of Selūne, charged with bringing light to the darkness and keeping the dark horrors of the night at bay. They always take the vanguard during the Boon-Time of the Goddess (the darkest nights of the month, when bands of cloaked, chanting Selūnites wander through the city streets, alit in silvery, pale-yet-surprisingly-bright moonfire radiance which clings to the streets and alleys for a time after the Lady's faithful have passed. Such excursions on the deeply-darkened streets are often contested by faithful of Shar, and the resultant skirmishes between the two faiths are viewed by the Selūnites as a prime way to "battle-harden" their flock). Heavily-armed paladins and crusaders. High-ranking knights bear helms or shields engraved with luminous mithril or silver halos that shine forth with holy power (protection from evil, 20'r). Grandmaster: Durnath the Truly Luminous. Their symbol is the Lucent Halo, their oath is "Shine Forth, Strike Forth, O Selūne!"

Knoburr "Knothole" Readybuck (N HaM T2/psionic wild talent)
Halfling sneak thief, burglar and underling of the Xanathar. Has the ability to propel himself through the smallest keyholes and under the slimmest gap at the bottom of a door (hence his nickname). He has also "pushed" himself through the glass panes of a window, twice, although the experience left him physically ill afterwards. In addition, he can "smell" nearby magic, when cast or if active (he claims appearance-altering and polymorphing enchantments have a whiff of sweet mint, and active wards stink of stale zzar). Knoburr believes that these abilities come from the divine blessing of the god Mask, and he is fervent in his worship and tithings as a result.

Korl "Redsnout"
Named for the angry red ruin that was once his nose (and right cheek). Dark-haired, dark-eyed. An enforcer of the Hobgoblins street gang.

Kordhoun Var
A notorious ships captain and sea reaver. Made much of his later fortunes investing in the guilds of his compatriots Jheldarr Boaldegg and Kelvar Helmfast. Father of Ammathan and Enavrun. Kordhoun and his ship, the Bright Bannaver, were lost at sea during the spring of 1357DR.

From Ed on Twitter:

quote:
Among most, they're "morn days" (short for "firstmorn" or first morning, despite most folks being born later in a day), and are spoken of as "tenth of [month]" or "sixteenth of [month]" as mention of tendays declines. Note that the twenty-sixth of a month would be "score-and-six"

And the followup, about celebrations:

quote:
Local lords and nobles throw feasts for their servants/households on their birthdays, and "regular folk" throw small dinners for kin and friends (if on good terms). Guilds and trading cabals usually hold private dinners for members who've "done good" for the organization that year

Edit: Another followup!

quote:
A pleasure! Always happy to talk Realmslore. BTW: 1300s into 1400s, feasts have large shared platters, but diners get small pies (fat, oversized tarts) of both sweet (fruits) and savory (meats w/gravy) sorts, to take home to elderly, infirm, and children who couldn't attend.

Morn days and firstmorn days... ok, that's another alternative. Might be harder to sing to. "Merry Firstmorn" would work though. Just curious, when's that from? Guess I may need to make a twitter account with a junk email address just to do searches.

Meritid Archneie (LE HM P16 of Umberlee)
The Undulations From the Vaster Deep, Tyrant of Tides, The Wave That Whelms, The Conquering Current, Lord of the Glittering Floes, The Thunderous Roar of the Trackless Sea, The Giant of Wind and Wave, The Turmoil Titanic. Dread High Trident of Umberlee. An ambitious up-and-coming young priest. Descended from the legendary Umberlant priest, Jorist Archneie of Tharsult. An underling of the Kraken Society (he has petitioned the Kraken to establish a society cell within Waterdeep – under his leadership, of course). In 1369DR he discovered a magic abalone shell floating in the harbor which he believed to be the legendary Orglara, a sacred text of the Bitch Queen. Following this discovery, he successfully petitioned the Lords to use half the annual Umberlee's Cache tithe to construct a temple to the Bitch Queen atop a large outcropping of rock near the city's South Gate.

Since his ascension, he has embarked on vendettas and blood feuds against those who have wronged him or stood in his way; these include the entire merfolk community of the Harbor bottom (who refuse to bow to his will and challenge his secretive underwater comings and goings), upon whom he unleashed a virulent underwater plague in 1371 DR; a sizeable contingent of Tymorites (most notably the priests Jorynn Halstaff and Tazendra Twice-Blessed, and the Hin adventurer Dimvel Stoutkeg); and the former guardian of Umberlee's Cache, the merfolk priestess Thur Aquarvol (who now lies chained deep in the submerged depths of the Underspires). Merlic Bramblebranch (LG HaM F2/P4 of Arvoreen)
A former member of the Shields of Snail Street adventuring fellowship. "The Boldbramble" is a well-known figure in the local Dock Ward taverns and waymoots, where he passes time puffing on a long-stemmed pipe and dispensing his various herbal remedies and "Hin wisdoms" to any who will stop to listen. He was once also widely known for his part in the defeat of Fhang Mawr, the Many-Toothed Wyrm of Ardeep. He is descended from the Small Folk of the Purple Hills of Tethyr, and he willingly donates both time and coins to helping new halfling arrivals in the city settle into new homes and jobs.

The Merry Blades of Mirtul
Local adventuring fellowship. Fronted by the wild-haired gnome, Gnovarro Mallorhelm. Said to have sought out and met their doom in The Dungeon Where No Man Has Trod, deep in the High Moor wilderness.

The Merry-Thoughts
"Many were those who thought me Wise; But I always thought myself Merry" (apocrypha, attributed to and said to have been inscribed upon the lid of the tomb of Ahghairon the Old, deep in his spell-locked and guarded tower). Fellowship of vocalists and tale-spells, those paid performers who combine their bardic knowledge and command of the Art to accompany a spoken performance with subtle illusionry, both visual and olfactory. Gather informally in the back booths of Tandra's Ale-Tide, a South Ward tankard house. Chaired by the gnome Gnostorro, quick of wit and impossibly deep and rich of voice.

The Merry Wanderers
Local adventuring fellowship, active in the middle 1300s. Claimed to have acquired the The Gold-Laced Cloak of Grimbault (the legendary garment of the dwarf-king Grimbault. It is said that a single thread plucked from the shining weave was gold enough to buy an estate anywhere in eastern Amn or the Tethyrian highlands). Fell apart (rumored through vicious infighting) and disappeared soon thereafter.
