I just saw a video on Facebook of a blind woman with a miniature horse as her guide animal, and it got me to thinking...
In the Dragonlance Legends, Crysania was blinded, and wound up with a white tiger as a guide animal, at the end.
Have we seen any examples of this in the Realms, aside from Montolio and his owl?
(Sure, blindness is something that can usually be cured by magic, but there will always be cases where, for whatever reason, that doesn't happen.)
Also, given the use of magic, it would seem likely to me that there could be some variant magic that could be used to make a guide animal that's something like, but not quite, a familiar.

In the Moonshae Trilogy, there were the Leviathan, the Pack, and Kamerynn, the Unicorn. They were connected to a primal spirit in a way that could make them guide animals, in a way.
Those are iconic, more-than-mortal animals, connected to something divine. I'm talking about animals that assist regular people with their day-to-day lives. Like seeing eye dogs, or any of the companion animals for people suffering from various physical or psychological impairments. |
