The Shadow-Trickster Template

“Shadow-Trickster” is a template that can be applied to any Elf character that explicitly follows Erevan Ilesere as a Deity. (referred to hereafter as the “base character”). It uses all of the base character’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Special Attacks: A shadow-Trickster retains all the special attacks of the base character. The shadow-Trickster also gains the ability to manipulate shadows, granting her access to various spell-like abilities based on her character level, as shown in the table below. These spell-like abilities are as the spells cast by a sorcerer of the base character’s level.

Level Abilities
1–2 Tricksters Shadow mask 3/day (FRCS-special)
3–4 Dimension door 1/day (self only)
5–6 Darkness 3/day
7–8 Dimension door 2/day
9–10 Scoundrels Shadow spray 3/day (FRCS-special)
11–12 Shadow walk 1/day
13–14 Displacement 2/day
15–16 Dimension door 3/day
17–18 Evard’s black tentacles 1/day
19+ Shadow walk 3/day

A shadow-Trickster cannot use any of her spell-like abilities in an area of bright light (sunlight or the radius of a daylight spell).

Special Qualities: A shadow-Trickster retains all the base character’s special qualities, and also gains those special qualities listed below.

Light Blindness(Ex): Abrupt exposure to bright light (such
as sunlight or a daylight spell) blinds a shadow-Trickster for 1 round. In addition, she takes a –1 penalty on all attack rolls, saves, and checks when operating in bright light.

Darkvision (Ex): The character gains darkvision with a 60- foot range if she does not have darkvision already.

Abilities: Adjust from the base character as follows: Dex +2.

Skills: Shadow-walkers gain a +4 racial bonus on Hide checks.

Challenge Rating: Same as the base character +1.

Level Adjustment: Same as the base character +1.

History and Lore: The origins of The Shadow-Trickster template begin with Mitzlevixven Ahmaquissar; Rogue 5/ Cleric 20/ Mischiefmaker 5/ Shadowlord 5 of Erevan Ilesere, circa -12,000 DR. 200 years before the First Crown War. The Trickster himself manifested before Mitzlevixven during The Midnight Gambol on the Equinox in the northern-most region of Ancient Arryvandar. Erevan Ilesere asked Mitzlevixven to comprise a set of Sacred books devoted to Shadows and Trickery, accessible only to devoted followers of the Elven God of Mischief and Chaos. These powers were to be used to help defend against the coming Kin-Wars among the People.

Even as a C/N deity, Erevan Ilesere is wholly devoted to the Seldarine Pantheon and his fellow brothers and sisters who live in Arvandor. So it was with Mitzlevixven Ahmaquissar in Ancient Arryvandar. As the Highest Ranking Cleric and Divine Caster of Erevan Ilesere on all of Faerun during -12,000 DR, Mitzlevixven began an epic compilation of books to promote the aspects and dogma of Erevan Ilesere. In a span of 200 years he wrote and recorded The Five Books of Laughing Shadow. As instructed by the Elven God of Mischief himself, Mitzlevixven Ahmaquissar penned down the Sacred words and imbued them all with Divine knowledge and power, full of chaos and trickery from his fickle deity. Secret words of Shadow and deception from the greatest Rogue in the Multiverse.

The Five Books of Laughing Shadow

Book of The Laughing Blade
Book of The Laughing Dancer
Book of The Laughing Art
Book of The Laughing Lord

The Fifth and last book was the most powerful of all.
Book of The Shadow-Trickster: (help me enter cannon here.)

Tricksters Shadow Mask: You cause a mask of shadows to form around your face. It does not impede your vision, cannot be physically removed, completely hides your features, and protects you against certain attacks. You receive a +4 Divine bonus on saving throws against light or darkness spells and any spells that rely on bright light for damaging effects, such as the flare spell or the fireworks effect of pyrotechnics. You also gain a50% chance each round to avoid having to make a saving throw against Illusion spells or attacks with the Shadow sub-school descriptor. When the spell’s duration ends, the shadow mask fades over the course of 1d4 rounds (rather than immediately), giving you time to keep your face hidden via other means. This spell-like ability lasts as many rounds as the full character level.

Scoundrel's Shadow Spray: You cause a multitude of ribbonlike shadows to instantaneously explode outward from your body in a 20' radius. Creatures in the area must make a WIL saving throw (DC=10 + 1/2 character level, + Cha Mod.) or take 2 points of temporary Strength damage, are dazed for 1 round, and suffer a –2 morale penalty on saving throws against fear spells and effects. The fear penalty ends when the shadow spray spell does, but the temporary Strength damage is instantaneous. Additionally, each enemy that fails it's saving throw against the Shadow-Ribbons takes a -4 penalty on Spell Resistance for 2 full rounds.

I would like to advance this and make it communal among the Candlekeep patrons. Anyone with history or an imagination that wants to join in please do.

Why is the DC for shadow spray so odd? Either it's calculated as a normal SLA (10 + equivalent spell level + CHA), or the regular DC formula (10 + 1/2 level + Cha). You could make it Int based, I guess, since the whole shadow and mischief thing brings to mind intelligence too.

Any old or new Lore on Erevan Ilesere is welcome as well as helping create a history for the 5 books and the Template.

I will add any contributions to the original post and give credit to the author.
