Am I right in thinking that there is no equivalent to item toughness/item hps in 5E? In other words, there is no system whereby you can damage mundane items and/or equipment? I can't seem to find anything that gives items a durability value that can be the subject of damage. Can anyone enlighten me if I've missed something?

You're looking for pages 246 & 247 in the 5e Dungeon Master's Guide Krash.

AC is dependent on the material it's made from, hp depends on the item's size and whether the DM determines the object to be resilient or fragile. Things like walls have a set threshold of damage that they're immune to from a single attack.

When life turns it's back on you...sneak attack for extra damage.
