A wonderful idea, Jeremy. This will serve as a superb supplement to my own comprehensive compilation and detailing of music-related Realmslore -- collected from practically every published resource released by TSR/Wizards.

Would you mind if we collaborate a little on this, in private, since I can probably share my own files with you? You'll no doubt be able to extract further sources for ballad titles and the like from them as well.

I'm a compulsive FR list maker, so have lots of this stuff floating around. It's only useful though if people need it - so I wait until someone needs it!

I made Eric Boyd's day the other week when I sent him through a dwarven lexicon.

It's a bit like the Candlekeep Seminar at GEN-CON this year when someone in the audience asked about Ed's lore showcased in the Chamber of Sages and whether it had been catalogued. Garen Thal said no it hadn't and then I cleared my throat and said, "Well actually ...", much to the amusement of the gathering.

I'm hoping my Realmslore gift to the attendees that day makes it to the 'Keep sometime soon. I wonder when the next site update is due.

Sounds good to me.

EDIT: And George, thanks for that incredible list. You pretty much covered all the stuff I have, and then some.

Thanks also to those who've chimed in with ballad names from various sources. Much appreciated.

Time to get to work.

I've sent the file to Alaundo. It's just really waiting for when he has the time to put together the content for uploading to the site when the next update occurs.

  • One of my favourites... and not the least because a gnome composed it. But also because I've long thought of writing/recomposing a few lines of this ballad myself, for a future campaign.

It's something I've integrated into my compilation of musical Realmslore. If there are any lines or song pieces excerpted in any published Realms source, you can bet I've got them copied down into my files already.

Of course, I'd like to extrapolate from these little snippets, eventually, and build on them to the point where I can create my own Realms-based music using this material as a basis. But that's a project planned for a loooong way off in the future of SageTime.

I don't know if any of these quite qualify as ballads, as they read off the page simply as poems. But I suppose they could be turned into music by one gifted enough.

"The Horror of the Crystal Shard" (The Crystal Shard)
"Where Silver Rivers Run" (Streams of Silver)
"No Path by Chance but by Plot" (Passage to Dawn)
    "Upsen Downs" (The Thousand Orcs)
"Cherlrigo's Darkness" (The Last Threshold, The Companions, "The Sundering")

"'You don't know my history,' he said dryly."

    From Cormanthyr:

    - "Battlestars at Tilver's Gap" ballad - the tale of the destruction of the orcs from Thunder Peaks by the combined Dalesmen militias and elven armies. (DR 619 Year of Orcsfall)
From The Fall of Myth Drannor:

    - "Tales of the Tavern Wars" ballad by the bard Oslarelar, a long-winded ballad that celebrates many individual feats among all the races of the allied city.
    - The "Fall of the Arms-Leaders" ballad describes Hachaam Selorn's and Kelvhan Olortynnal's deaths as fates suffered gladly by two comrades fighting back to back and singing the battle hymns to Corellon Larethian that would speed their way to heroic afterlives as Reverend Ones of their god's celestial armies.
    From Cult of the Dragon:

    - "Ballad of the Shadow Storm" popular in Westgate prior to the death of King Verovan, refers to Aurgloroasa in her true form plundering and sinking of the treasure-laden Winsome Wyrm just outside the harbor in the Year of Watery Graves (1091 DR)
    - “The Clouds Came Rolling In.” - a sad ballad still sung today in the southern Dales, recounting the destruction Dretchroyaster wrought throughout Battledale, Tasseldale, and Featherdale in the Year of the Snarling Dragon (1279 DR).
