It is right around the corner. Not only is it my birthday, but it's the most fun holiday of the year. Anybody give their players a trick or treat? Any adventures you like to revisit? Any big, creepy plans for this year?

Unfortunately I'm inbetween games. No one around here really enjoys D&D. Got a friend starting up a Hunter: The Reckoning game, but I'm so sick of White Wolf at this point (just finished a two year Exalted Modern campaign.)

This year, I am pulling a prank on a player. She had to miss the last session, so the setup is perfect. She has no idea it's coming, but her husband, who also plays with us, is helping me plot this diabolical scheme.
We are all Dr. Who fans, and she's absolutely terrified of the Vashta Nerada. So, after consulting with my group, we have agreed to my mad scheme.
Next session will be a dream. She won't know that, though. I'm starting the session as if we are just picking up where we left off, and she's meeting up with the party again. I've worked it to where they'll encounter said terrifying beasts, and slowly "kill off" each party member, leaving her the last one standing.
That's when she'll wake up, and I'll reveal to her that it's all been a dream.
Should be fun.

Edit: I forgot to mention. The real clincher will be when the next session starts the same way the "dream" did.

Oooo! The Vashta Nerada. Base them in Candlekeep!

Just like those two great Tenth-Doctor DW episodes about a planet-wide library.

That sounds fun Delwa!

I've been revamping the Ghost of Mistmoor adventure from Dungeon #35 for 5e, naming all the townsfolk and adding in some more subplots. And I should try to work in some Horror checks from the old Ravenloft rules as the author recommended. It probably won't be done in time, and I don't have players anyway, but it's fun to be working on something thematic in the right season.

A Ravenloft or Masque of the Red Death adventure would be fun too.

Not a bad idea! They are in Secomber at the moment. I was going to try and put them in a abandoned subterranean dungeon that is the remains of a library from ancient Athalantar. Seeing as this is a dream, I could put the real VN in Candlekeep for future terror.

xaeyruudh, I'm excited. Hope I don't tip my hand out of excitement.

The 'Keep is being overrun by deadly shadowspawn bookmites? Call an exterminator! A holy one.

Sounds fun Delwa. I'd love to see the expression on your players face when she wakes up and wonders, was that a dream or a premonition?

I haven't decided yet, but I'm toying with the idea of having the "real" threat (after they wake up) be a real pushover of an encounter. It would be funny watching a level 4 party running away from regular (not even dire) rats.

I am 6'6" and close to 250 lb. Four years ago, I dressed as a Hooter's Girl. I think I might break out that costume and DM a game on Halloween. Now there is something scary to see.

That's one way to scare your players, sure. I hope you bought a handle of Jager for the occasion

Step 1. Dream sequence freaks out player. Questions are raised regarding both sanity and premonition.

Step 2. Very-near-future encounter looks similar to dream, but PCs know what to expect and handily win the day without even needing a potion of healing. The player whose character had the dream is teased for freaking out about dust bunnies. Maybe someone observes that premonitions are a good thing.

Step 3. Weeks/months later, with no further foreshadowing and in very different surroundings, the PCs are unexpectedly set upon again by the terrors from the player's dream. They anticipate an easy victory, and perhaps chuckle at the DM's apparent fondness for easy monsters. Only this time is different. The monsters are immune to the attack forms the PCs successfully employed on the previous occasion, and all of the PCs' defenses are useless. The monsters also absorb a lot more damage before dying, and deal a lot more damage on each attack. Perhaps during the combat the PCs retreat to a more defensible area, wherein the air is heavier and the shadows longer, and the PC realizes that it's eerily similar to her premonition... because she's suddenly aware that it was in fact a premonition. Perhaps everyone except the PC who had the dream dies. Perhaps she's left in the fully awake nightmare of finding her way silently out of the dungeon, amid the sounds of other unseen forms approaching to investigate the noises of combat... alone, in the dark... spells and potions and strength expended... to find help... somewhere...

So, if The Doctor lured the Weeping Angels to the world library, would both be screwed?

Not exactly on-topic, but I've been trying to figure-out a D&D-ish way of incorporating the Weeping angels into a session (which is Halloween-ish, so on-topic after all ).

I'll be busy escorting my little Storm Trooper through a few neighborhoods this Halloween. She'll be hunting Jedi...and ahem, candy I believe too. ;)

On a gaming related note, I plan on having a new gaming station put together upstairs in the next few weeks to continue some campaign goodness!

If I did it, I'd change the lore, but keep the angels abilities. I'd make the angels demonic spirits that became so powerful, the gods restricted them to possess only be potent when they possess stone statues. Upon possessing a statue, the spirit can then use its abilities, but only while it's unobserved.
Then I would place said possessed statues in a room facing each other with a bowl of goldfish in the middle. The goldfish would be cared for and replinished by an old caretaker with a wand that does sonic bursts. I might even make the statues part of a puzzle. The kind where you have to turn the statues in a certain way to open up a secret passage.

It would possibly make a great opening to a Arcane Age game.
The final boss could be exorcizing the Walking Statues of Waterdeep.

And none of my players frequent these halls anymore. One visits occasionally, but he isn't part of the current game.

Last year, my players and I just dressed up for halloween, though our game night actually fell on November 2nd. IMO That wasn't the fun part though, the fun part was travelling to the venue and picking up snacks in my costume.

This year, game night falls on Halloween itself. If I'm dressing up, I need to wear something practical, though I'd much rather mess with my player's heads. Maybe a one-night trip to Ravenloft or I drop in some Lovecraftian horrors.

When life turns it's back on you...sneak attack for extra damage.

I'm going to go as a drow. At work we are having some activities so I'm going to dress up. Since I'm on the clock, I'll have to find some way to lighten the make up I got. Its black and blue and the ears are black so i will probably need to buy some white face paint and mix them so that I'll be a bit lighter. I'm going as a Drow matron mother complete with snake whip (tie or tape three rubber snakes together) with a red velvet dress and black cape. I hope I'll be able to pull this off. The only thing I won't do is wear red contacts because my eyes get irritated to much. So, this particular drow has light brown eyes...lol.

Hah! That reminds me, an ex-girlfriend and I used to celebrate Valloween. We would dress up as zombies or something similarly grotesque and go out for dinner on Valentines day a a fancy restaurant

That sounds kind of cool, Fellfire.

Though I'm almost hesitant to ask whether your eating out would have also included consumables that reflected such a blending of somewhat romantic and yet grotesque foodstuffs.

Yeah, that was cool. She was quirky, but fun. I'd like to say it was my idea, but we learned of it from another couple we met who had been doing it for a few years.

Every year, I try to run Ravenloft on Halloween for my players. I terrified one pretty badly about eight years ago with the spirit of a little girl that was trapped on a ghost ship. He made me stop the session and talk about something else to get his mind off it. I never use ghastly descriptions like in a slasher film, mind you. I simply use classic Gothic descriptions, my voice in different levels accents, and I build a deep story around the entire campaign in Ravenloft. It's all about classic descriptions but never gore, and using body language and voice control to add more depth and life to the story. We finished the session, and to this day he remembers the description vividly. He also is still a little bit nervous of my Ravenloft games. ;-)

Man, do I ever love running Ravenloft! :-D
