I was looking at the 3.5 Clerical Domain known as 'Inquisition' in addition to the Prestige Class known as the Church Inquisitor (Complete Divine sourcebook).

And it got me to thinking about the Inquisition Domain and F.R. deities. Because the various mentions of this domain in 3.0 and 3.5 do not list F.R. deities that could have it or are likely candidates to have it applied to.

Since the word "Inquisition" can mean a number of things (you'll see what I mean if you look it up on a number of credible online dictionaries), what F.R. deities would you consider to be strong candidates to have clerics who would have access to this domain? In addition, I'd be looking for F.R. deities with a strong tradition of ordering their clericy to go on truth-seeking missions as well as tradition, old-fashioned Spanish Inquisition-style heretic hunts.

Thanks for your time and consideration!

It would be great to have a heretic faith of Tyr running round as inquisitors.

The Eye of Justice sect (that of the Heresy of the Threefold God) involved the faiths of Tyr, Helm and Torm. Because of the alignments (and their clergy aligments), portfolios and assigned domains, I could see the Inquisition domain being a part of all 3 faiths. And the Church Inquisitor PrC showing up in "heresy investigators" for all 3 faiths as well.

Bane also seems like a logical candidate for the Inquisition domain. Especially concerning his clergy's interaction with Cyric clergy in the 1300s.

Savras, too. For he has/had the Truth portfolio. And the primary objective of inquisitions is to seek out the truth for when it not apparent. Plus, just look at the spells of the Inquisition domain. Those are all spells a Savras diviner would certainly be desirous of casting.

I could see the deities who have been known to torture to have this domain.......

well even the spanish inquisition wasnt all that nice

why is being a wizard like being a drow? both are likely to find a dagger in the back from a rival or one looking to further his own goals, fame and power

A sect of Ilmater definitely.

Ay yes, a heresy of Ilmater that seeks to alleviate suffering by inflicting it upon their enemies (espcially including other heretics of the Ilmatari faith)

Thank you very much for all your contributions!

Ilmater ... good call, George ... I didn't even think of him. I could also see specialist inquisitors of Selūne and Shar (Dark Moon Heresy) as well as Lathander and Amaunator (Risen Sun Heresy and Three-Faced Sun Heresy). Savras (as Snow mentioned) for the direct association of Truth and Inquisition.

I found a second reason for mentioning Helm. It seems likely that there were Helmite Inquisitors seeking out the True Ghost Knight Faithful heretics. The Ghost Knight had a quite wide range of roamings. From Waterdeep to Sembia to Tethyr and beyond.

I use the Pathfinder Inquisitor class in my Realms games. Their take on Inquisitors is much more liberal and slides in very well with a D&D fantasy setting. I have orders of Inquisitors in the churches of Bane, Bhaal, Hoar, Myrkul, Tyr, Torm, and many others where they would best fit. They are more like "Ranger/Clerics" of their faiths, rooting out not just enemies within the church (and they don't really go after those do not worship the church, as our real-world analogues to them are) but also root out and hunt down enemies actively harming their faith.
