Sir Castio Deltastarr, Knight of the Chalice

BACKGROUND

A woman lies motionless in the town square, in her arms is her child. They both sit in a pool of their own blood. Next to the wife is a blade. The blade that ended both their lives. The blade she used herself. The crowd formed around the scene stand awestruck at what they witnessed right in front of their eyes. A whisper is heard from someone in the crowd, "She was mad...she called us all... demons?".

THE LIES

"Sir Castio Deltastarr, Paladin of Lathander, Knight of the Chalice, you have been accused of heinous, tainted and unforgivable crimes against your order. You have been accused of allying yourself with the spawns of hell whom which you've sworn to destroy. You've dishonored your superiors, your Brothers of the Chalice and most importantly yourself. How do you plead?"

"Guilty."

"Through your own admission and in light of your previous honor and valor, you are hereby removed from the Order of the Chalice and exiled from Neverwinter. Do you fully understand this verdict?"

"Yes."

"The Order has no proof of your crimes but your own confession. Do you also confess to the accusations that you killed Danil Whitelan and Ju'laes Hawke, your Brothers of the Chalice?"

"No."

"Although you have been removed from our Order, under the sun of Lathander and even with your questionable faith in our God you cannot lie to us within these walls. Do you admit to killing these men?"

"No."

"What was done to these men was not only unholy and a desecration to their knighthood and honor it was nothing less than cold blooded murder--"

"NO! What happened to my family... was murder!"

THE RUMOR

"Asmodeus Worshiper!" "Infernal Consort!" "Fiend Pawn!" "Demon ****er!"

Rumors spurned, and tales of Castio's crimes spread across the city of Neverwinter. Cast out of The Order of the Chalice for allegedly consorting with demons, ironically going against the order's one true purpose;

"Members of the order devote themselves entirely to the organization's primary mission: the complete eradication of demons in the multiverse. To this end, they seek out and destroy demons wherever they exist on the Material Plane, while also carry out well-planned excursions against targets within the Abyss itself. These stalwart knights have battled demonkind in every place and every situation, many having sacrificed their lives to the cause. Nonetheless, the group's various succeses have had enough of an impact that their existence has become a concern to the demon princes themselves."

Other rumors pin the blame to Castio for having his brothers of the order killed. Their gory remains were all that was left amongst their armor and weapons. Other rumors include selling his soul to a Demon Prince, laying with a succubus, falling from grace, becoming a Hell Knight and necromancy.

THE TRUTH

The Order of the Chalice considers its hard-won victories to be the necessary precursors to an inevitable triumph. The leaders of the order have researched the Abyss in considerable detail, deciding that the powerful Demon Princes should be targeted, eradicated and thus removed from power, causing the descent of the remaining demon hordes into infighting. They have come to the conclusion that the groups who do not simply eradicate one another in the struggle for supremacy will splinter, resulting in divisions that will be much easier for the order to confront and vanquish.

To this end the order has grabbed the attention of many of the Demon Princes and in particular, Lynkhab 'Lady of Regret', demon of depression and desire. In one stroke at the final stages of her plan she's destroyed Castio's name, mind and soul; but Castio is but a small piece of her master plan. Castio's family fell sick, sick beyond his own healing capabilities as the orders Combat Medic. Driven to the point of depression Castio made a deal with the devil to save his family from their tainted sickness, a sickness Lynkhab created.

The convenient presence of this demon and her offer of a single wish to the Holy Knight was enticing. However, Castio, although reckless, was more cunning than that. His order gave him the education and training needed to deal with the twisted minds and dealings of these infernal monsters. Castio was too smart, Castio binded the demon. Now the demon was offered a wish from Castio. Castio offered freedom to the demon in exchange for his family.

THE BETRAYAL

Demons can be bound to their word, but demons can twist their words. Castio could not foresee this twist of fate, a fate which he couldn't escape. Lynkhab cured the sickness she gave to his family. His wife Denova and his daughter Sathele were healthy and free, but the demon removed all desire from Castio's wife of him. In her eyes Castio was a morbidly disfigured creature, the sight of him terrified her. It's as if she was staring into the gates of hell.

Distraught Castio ordered the demon to remove her curse as he tried to cleanse the cursed vision of his wife, but it only drove her away. Lynkhab offered Castio another wish. Lynkhab told Castio their exchange amused her, she said he intrigued her, she seduced him. Lynkhab said she would make Castio attractive to his wife again. She said she would go beyond that and bless him with unearthly beauty. The blessing however, could only come in the form of a ritual, a ritual where Castio needed to lay with her. Lay with the demon in her domain.

Pretty sure the Paladin would lose his favor with Lathander if he makes a deal with a demon...right?

Well if Demon evil, or deal evil certainly hard to remain a Paladin.

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."
"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."

Well its an enticing story, thanks for sharing. To me, it makes sense because the knight wants to do right but is far too deep into the demon's machinations. As for losing favor, if really depends on what edition your using and how losing favor works from the DMs perspective.

It also helps to understand the sort of character he's playing, what hos motivations are, if he's looking to atone, how he's going to deal with the demons, etc. I'd say full disclosure with his wife would be the first step and targeting a demonic stronghold would be second. Then maybe converting a known unholy artifact to the light might get him reinstated with the order.

Even if it doesn't get him reinstated with the order, his paladin abilities could be. He simply works without the backing of the order from that point.

I have a dream that one day, all game worlds will exist as one.

Well part was typing error, had was to be hard.

The more involved thought behind the conditional statement. Some times an option is used by DMs that a Demon or Devil is not always evil.

Even WotC had Eludecia, the Succubus Paladin.

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."

Lynkhab seems out of character. The entire point about Lynkhab is that she's really, really, really depressed about her own existence, so driving mortals nuts is something that she personally would have no time for, given that she's spending her time looking for someone powerful enough to destroy her.

I don't know anything about Lynkhab, but the story is odd. In the end, Lynkhab's family is being hindered by a demon's magic. The demon says that she will remove the hindrance if the paladin will sleep with her. If the paladin cheats on his wife that he loves in order to "save" her, he's not keeping to his own ethos. Also, at the same time, the wife is obviously magically enchanted, so he could seek out someone to remove said enchantment who isn't some twisted bitch who obviously wants to do some sex ritual with him in order to darken his soul and use the energy from that for something more nefarious.

The story might work better if the demon actually made him believe that she were his wife and then say threatened to kill the child growing inside her if he doesn't do something for her. As a Lathanderite, he would be torn between his hatred of demons and his belief that all children should have a chance at life.

Alavairthae, may your skill prevail
