The eBook edition of THE BARD'S TALE is now available! (I believe the print edition will follow shortly.) This is an anthology of fantasy stories focused on bards, edited by Daniel Myers (who also provides authentic medieval recipes) and with terrific stories by Ed Greenwood, Maxwell Alexander Drake, Rosemary Jones, Donald J. Bingle, Gabrielle Harbowy, Kelly Swails, Brian Pettera, and a number of others. Plus, you get a new story from me about my character Selden the fencing master and part-time sword for hire. Check it out here:

In Episode 28 of the Side Project Podcast, Ed Greenwood, Erik Scott de Bie, and Chris A, Jackson discuss the new Ed Greenwood Group, publisher of new fiction/gaming shared universes, in general and Hellmaw, the urban fantasy/horror milieu that is the first of those settings, in particular. It has now been determined that my first full-length Iron Kingdoms novel from Privateer Press#8203; will be called BLACK DOGS and that it's coming out in March, 2016.

The book stars the mercenary company the Black River Irregulars who also starred in my novella MURDER IN CORVIS. If you missed that one, you can get it here in either eBook or audiobook form. (Unlike the novella, BLACK DOGS will also be available as a paper-and-in book.)

Stewart Wieck and the gang have a Kickstarter going to revive the Scarred Lands, a very cool sword-and-sorcery setting for RPG's and fiction.

If the campaign hits a particular Stretch Goal, backers will receive the Scarred Lands trilogy I wrote way back when plus a new short story continuing the adventures of my hero Vladawen.

Check it out here:

Hi, Hippo, glad you're looking forward to BLACK DOGS. Hope you enjoy it.

If Privateer asks for more short fiction and I can fit it into my schedule, then I will certainly do more, but at the moment, we're focused on the novels. They do have one little short story they commissioned a while back that has not been published yet. Presumably that will turn up in one of the mini-anthologies at some point, but I don't know which one or when.

A while back, Nonbinary Review ran a story of mine that connects to the seminal horror work THE KING IN YELLOW and stars the real-life fencing master Aldo Nadi. Previously, you couldn't read the story unless you could access the Lithomobilus platform, but now the issue is online. So if you missed the yarn before, you can find it here:

ONDER Magazine #1 from The Ed Greenwood Group is now available! Among other stuff, it contains work from Ed himself (including his thoughts on a new beginning for the Forgotten Realms) and Gabrielle Harbowy and new short stories by Chris A. Jackson and me. My story is set in the Hellmaw universe and stars a character who will also star in a novel I'll be writing by and by. Check it all out here:

I enjoyed the blog post and have a related question to writing in a shared world. Namely, how do you handle characters created by other authors, especially if those former heroes they created have the potential for betrayal and/or death in your script. A good example are the hero vs hero stories that have populated recent cinema narratives.

Professional illustrator and comic book artist.

Hi, Adhriva. Glad you enjoyed the post.

To answer your question, in my Forgotten Realms work, I have pretty much steered clear of characters created in other novels or short stories. I have felt somewhat freer to use characters created in the gaming sourcebooks. The way this works is that if I tell me editor what I have in mind, and the editor says yes or no. This all happens in the outline approval stage, so there's no danger that I will do something with a character in the course of actually writing a story and only find out afterward that it's a no go.

I try to be consistent with what the creator of the character had in mind. You may or may not like my portrayal of Sammaster in YEAR OF ROGUE DRAGONS, but I made him an evil nut job with a dragon and dracolich obsession.. That's what the original material said he is.

Generally speaking, the more important a character is, the less likely it is that the publisher will let you change him significantly. The change needs to be a key part of a good story that can only be told if the change happens, and even then, you can't do it if it has long-term implications for the profitability of the setting. Back when I was working for WotC, I could have pitched the FR equivalent of HAMLET, and if it had involved croaking Drizzt and Elminster, there's no way it would have been green-lit. (Just an example, there. I would never, ever consider doing that even if I thought I could get away with it because it would be grossly disrespectful to Bob and Ed.)

There are times when the publisher actually decides a big change is in order and commissions the writer to bring it about in the context of a work of fiction. In THE HAUNTED LAND, there are big changes to the land of Thay. WotC decided they wanted Thay to evolve in that way, then asked me to write the trilogy where it happened.

A lot of the big apparent changes you see in stories have back doors built into the situations that will allow them to be undone. For example, the change that comes to the status of Captain America and the heroes who side with him in the new movie is clearly something the film makers can change back when it suits them. Stories involving comic-book superheroes and super-villains are very often like this, to the extent that we feel that nobody stays dead in the Marvel and DC Universes.

Hi Richard. What is your current standing with WotC? Is there even tinyest chance we could get more Aoth and the company novels in anywhere in near future?
