Susan Morris interviewed me on the subject of writing the mastermind villain. You can find that interview here:

A very insightful interview, Richard. I totally agree with Susan when she said “Richard Lee Byers’s work with villains is always extraordinary, giving them a depth and a raw emotional realism usually reserved for heroes.”

And these words from you made me nod in agreement: “Mastermind villains tend to have rich inner lives, detailed back-stories, and a grandeur to their ambitions that makes them charismatic. Every charismatic character makes a story that much more entertaining whether he’s a good guy or a bad guy.”

One question. You mentioned a couple of approaches in “believably defeating a mastermind.” Which of them you think is the best, or you prefer most of the time?

Every beginning has an end.

Hi, Dennis. First off, thanks for the kind words.

Looking back over my work, I've tended to pit a team of heroes against the mastermind villain. But I don't think that's an inherently better way to do it. It's just what seemed like it would work in the particular story I was writing at the time.

As have I. Though there were occasions when I made my mastermind villain ruin himself, by miscalculation, overconfidence, and little missteps like tiny snowballs turning into an avalanche.

Every beginning has an end.

Wizards is putting out a new edition of War of the Spider Queen, all six novels in two trade-paperback volumes. If you're interested in the story but have never gotten around to picking up a copy, here's a chance to get it all in a nice format at a nice price:

I have a new blog post: "It's an Instant Netflix Halloween!" I'm recommending horror movies and thrillers you can download from the site in question.

I realize this is probably redundant since, if you want to talk to me, you can simply do it here. Still, for anyone who's interested, I now have a Q&A with Richard Lee Byers group on Goodreads:

Richard, I've got a question about the action in the first book of the Year of Rogue Dragon.

In your opinion, what percentage of Ylraphon's population survived the attack on the town? Just a few scattered survivors or enough to make for a refugee crisis on the area? The nucleus of a rebuilt town?

Icelander: I would say that enough of the town's population survived for it to be rebuilt.

Just wanted to say that I'm a huge fan of your Brotherhood of the Griffon series and that as much as I can't wait for your next book, I don't want the series to end!
