I'll be finishing the 5th book of that this eve. After that, it'll be a return to the zombie/super-hero mashup books with Ex-Purgatory, and I will then likely begin my re-read of the Dresden Files books.

Finished with Philosophy of Language. Main consideration coming out of this book for me... complete confusion about just whether we truly say "anything" in our speech.

I'm back on to comic books with my latest read... namely the Vengeance of Moon Knight series from Marvel. Moony's one of my favourite Marvel heroes, but I've put off reading this short series because I've been a little disappointed with the publisher's "modern" take on the character. So here's hoping this series is a pleasant turnaround.

@Wooly: What's your opinion on A Dance with Dragons, thus far?

The chapters with Reek were quite beautiful, and sad. I loved them.

When we first met the character that would become Reek, I liked him. But then he earned his "Turncloak" nickname, and I rather disliked him... That said, seeing him as Reek still made me feel bad for him -- the guy was simply broken. His appearance towards the end of the book makes me wonder if he's going to be able to overcome having been Reek, and if so, how will he progress from there.

I've read the first 4 books once before and was going to read A Dance With Dragons but decided to do a re-read to polish up on my memory since it had been 5 years or so since the last book.

So far the re-read is amazing! I'm a huge fan of the show as well and think they did an EXCELLENT job casting the characters.

Finished with Vengeance of the Moon Knight.

Sadly, aside from the first story-arc [which comprised just six issues, and provided an intriguing glimpse into the character's desperate mental state], this series did little to reinvigorate my interest in Marvel's modern take on Marc Spector's crime-fighting alter-ego.

...

Back to a re-read, and it's Realms-related. I'm tackling the brief Spellbound-assigned adventure module, The Runes of Chaos.

Well I am a bit embarrassed to admit but I started the books only after the show had come out so its still pretty fresh for me. At least I read the books, in one long marathon , before watching the show.
I agree with you about the casting. I mean its really shows that you don't have to dredge up some famous actors in order to make a good show. Though I suppose they are all famous now.

I picked up a library book yesterday, Dangerous Women. It's an anthology, and features a lot of big names. That said, I got it for exactly one short story, and then discovered a second one.

It's got a Dresden Files short story, from Molly's perspective, set during Ghost Story. That's why I got the book, and I read that story last night.

It also has a tale from George R. R. Martin, set in Westeros. It's set sometime before the Game of Thrones books; I'm not up enough on my Westerosi lore to know exactly how long before. It focuses on "the Dance of Dragons," a civil war in the Seven Kingdoms when there were succession issues in House Targaryen. Apparently, a lot of dragons died during this period, leading to their rather small numbers in the Game of Thrones books.

After that, it'll be onto Storm Front, as I refresh my memory of all things Dresden before the next book comes out in May. I'm doing it in chronological order, including the short stories in Side Jobs, the one in the Dresden Files RPG book, and any others I can get my hands on betwixt now and then.

Finished "The Alabaster Staff". It was better than I expected. I even kinda felt sorry that the author (Edward Bolme) did not have any other novels in The Forgotten Realms.

Now starting "Elminster Must Die".

It wasn't until I started reading books like the Malazan series, First Law, GOT, Mistborn and quite a few others that I realized how utterly stupid and low quality the FR books are. They are seriously garbage bathroom readers compared to real fantasy books. The FR characters are one micron thick. A seguleh child could destroy a squad of Drizzts. A Lock Lamora would rob a Jarlaxle blind. A Quick Ben could smash Elminster and the Chosen with a flick of his finger. They are children's books and horrible ones at that.

I enjoyed the Realms books as a teenager but have found it to be increasingly difficult to keep reading them as I've gotten older and read the sort of things you mentioned. They can be fun and serve a purpose, but I hope a fan of fantasy wouldn't limit themselves to only reading Realms books.

Firstly let me just say that i love those books you mentioned but realms books are not really aimed at that demographic. Which is fine because variety is the spice of life. I will be the first to admit that many FR books are inferior to GOT or Mistborn etc but that does not mean they are not worth reading. Personally i cant read serious stuff all the time so a realms novel or the star wars novel is always welcome for it provides me with a few hours of uncomplicated fun.
Also there are some great realms books out there, try out the Twilight war trilogy by Paul S Kemp.

Reading Promise of Blood, book 1 of The Powder Mage Trilogy by Brian McClellan. Quite engaging. It’s a like a fusion of Mistborn (by Brandon Sanderson) and Avatar (the TV series). Cool, innovative system of magic. There are a few nods to the Mistborn series, which probably is no surprise given that McClellan was once under Sanderson’s wing.

So far (I’m in chapter 12 now), I love what I’m seeing. Great characterization. McClellan deftly builds the tension among Field Marshal Tamas’s crew. My only hope is that the gods would be humanized at some point. I’m no fan of gods—never was.
Now on chapter 30. Mcclellan really knows how to keep the tension get higher and higher by every page.

While some characters appear to be too powerful, McClellan keeps them in check in the most pluasible ways.

As I mentioned above, this book certainly has a few Mistborn touches here and there--even to a point that the characters themselves highly resemble those from said setting. Tamas is kind of the Lord Ruler and Kelsier rolled into one; Taniel, Kelsier and Elend; Ka-poel, Vin; Olem, Ham and Breeze; and many others.

I'm also interested in knowing more about the savage sorcery of the Dynize, and why a Predii Privileged mage seems to fear Ka-Poel, a nineteen-year old girl whose sorcery is an enigma to most.
Finished this a couple of days ago. Enjoyed it totally. Though there are still too many questions left unanswered. Fortunately though for me, I only have about two months to wait for the next installment.

I'm now reading The Reaver by our very own Richard Lee Byers. I love what I'm seeing so far. And I suspect that by the time I finish, Umara will become one of my favorite FR characters. She's every bit the Red Wizard we're accustomed to seeing, and more.

Every beginning has an end.

Started Summer Knight, last night... Although I don't have a huge amount of time to read, I'm breezing through these books much quicker than anticipated. I may take a break after this book or the next, so as not to finish the series too quickly!
