I read the first book of the recent drizzt series (gauntlgrym) but wasn't motivated to continue. I have done some research about the series and know that drizzt seems to check out in it. What else do I need to know before going into The Companions?

They all are. All the Companions fit that description.

Since all the other Companions bit it first, Drizzt was left to hang out with a less desirable party.

It remains to be seen how he will reconcile the old and the new.
