As Darkmeer mentions doing for himself, I've started reassembling some of the fragments you've given us... and I ran into a problem... er, two problems. I'm sure the first is a problem with my software, and the second is with my virtual memory settings, but (a) when I save a composite map (for instance, Vaasa/Damara, Moonsea, and Dalelands), the resulting file is far smaller than any one of the originals; I seem to be losing resolution when I save the assembled image; and (b) I'm running WinXPPro SP3 with 4GB RAM (actually 8GB, but I haven't upgraded my OS yet, so 4GB is all I can use) and I'm running out of memory when I try to save the assembled Thay, Hordelands, T'u Lung, and Shou Lung. Not really surprising, given the sizes of the files, but it motivates me to ask:

What kind of hardware are you building this map on, Rob?

Edit: Third point: I've noticed that a couple of the maps you've given us are saved at different levels of magnification from most of the others... I can be patient and wait for the whole thing, if you're any closer to a portable file size. After my experience with patchworking, I just worry that a reduction in file size will impair the zoomability too much. Keep us posted on what you come up with.

Edit 2: May 8: Regarding the different scales... I thought I'd let other scribes know that they seem to be at 2x/50%, from the fiddling I've done. Hence the strikethru above; consider that resolved.
[/edit]

Many thanks again for all of this!

On the subject of patience: I do possess it, but I just realized how much fun I'm having assembling this puzzle. Got any more pieces?

Edit: In particular, the Sword Coast between Daggerford and Athkatla east to the Shining Plains, Calimshan, and/or Unther and Mulhorand would be awesome... whatever you think is ready for initial perusal.

Oh... and pumping up my VM settings did fix that issue... to a point. I can assemble the Hordelands and Kara-Tur into one file, but going bigger than that is problematic. Just thought anyone else trying to do the same thing would appreciate the fix.

Heh... on further inspection of Raurin, there's an unnamed oasis in the southwest reaches of the desert near the Giant's Belt. In case we haven't said it enough, these maps are glorious!

Edit: Found another misprint... the mountains east of Tethyr are the Kuldin Peaks, not the Kulden Peaks, IIRC... I'm pretty sure about this one because I DM'ed a group through several adventures involving Kartak Spellseer/Spulzeer (who has a hidden lair in said mountains), but I'll ask other scribes to double-check this, as I'm AFB ATM.

How did I get so fluent in abbreviation-speak?

Edit: Not sure if this one's already been reported; I couldn't find a mention of it, but that means nothing... there's another unnamed oasis, this one near the southwestern edge of Anauroch. I can, however, understand some oases simply not having names, if they're small and infrequently used (and not for any notable reason, like being haunted).

I've assembled all the contiguous sections we've been given so far, with the exception of the Moonshaes... I didn't leave myself enough room to insert them, and MS Paint doesn't let me insert empty space to the left (as far as I'm aware, anyway).

By way of another request (Edit: I do hope I'm not seeming greedy here) : More of the Shaar would be awesome; that would allow us to attach Dambrath and Halruaa to the main continent. I hope other scribes are having as much fun with this puzzle as I am; this is great!

As much fun as reassembling it is, I would still suggest that a single-file torrent is the best means of distribution for the whole map, but I don't know what the logistics of that means of distribution are like, apart from its reliance on essentially P2P downloading.

Anyway, it's time for me to shut up and get some sleep. Thank you again, Rob, for all of your hard work and the amazing results thereof.

Me again, Rob...

I was scanning semi-randomly through your online full-Toril map when I found Katashaka/Nyambe, and two three things struck me after looking over the entire continent:

a) What an awesome job you did of twisting the Nyambe locations into the Katashaka geography (from what I remember; I don't have my copy of Nyambe to hand ATM);

b) How diabolically happy I was to see the text "Yuan-Ti Land" in the map (it has to do with how Katashaka and Chult were both once part of the same landmass in the area of the sarrukh empire of Mhairshaulk - see GHotR page 6 - evil reptilian plans are slithering into my Realms);

c) The strange name of mbUi=Land and, on a related note, the spelling of "Great Mangrove Maarsh"... Hey, I had to find *something* wrong with it.

Seriously, every time I look at these maps, I feel like a kid in a candy store... a feeling I haven't had since MarkusTay was working full-steam on his Toril map. Hopefully my enthusiasm hasn't sounded *too* much like impatience...

Edit: I love the detail in the Pirate Isles. I played in a 2E privateer campaign that began shortly after the release of Pirates of the Fallen Stars, and it was a blast! In the end, around 15th level, we found Immurk's lost hoard and retired to the South to provide shipborne tours of the Shining Sea.

One last request: There are a couple of gaping holes in the East of the assembled map; if we could get a section bordered by the Dragon Reach in the west, the Dragonjaw Mountains / Paolin Reef in the south, Lake Ashane in the east, and the border with Pelvuria in the north, I can stop asking for stuff for a while... I hope. Willpower has never been a strength of mine.

I was wondering if Kozakura can display the province borders and names? Or just have a link next to it showing Kozakura zoomed in with province borders and names? That'd definitely be very helpful.

Really nice world map, though, I can't wait to see more.

So when do you update these? And is there a site in particular to see all of these together?

Razz,

There are plots afoot to host the maps here at CK. I really do want to find a way to get the entire map in a single hi-res file... ideally the vector-mapped original format, but (a) I'm pretty sure it won't fit on a single DVD, even dual-layer, and (b) I don't think we can send hard drives safely through the mail yet, and (c) I don't really have a spare hard drive anyway... although those new solid-state drives might be just what we need for this... hrm... what do you think, Rob?

Hi all,
I just dropped in and was surprised to see a bunch of requests in this thread! I'll try to get to them this week.

As for getting a huge hi-res file, well, it may not be possible. But what we might be able to do is divide the map into, say, 16 equally sized sections for easy assembly. What do you think?

regarding the capitalization... are you sure that your source isn't a typo (i.e., do you have more than one source)?

And regarding the map: that might work, but I don't think we'd have the computing power to do the reassembly... my assembled chunks are several times smaller than the original files I'm downloading, so I know I'm losing detail when I save my assemblies, and I'm still running into "out of memory" issues when I try to attach Faerun to Kara-Tur and the Hordelands (or attach Kara-Tur to Faerun and the Hordelands), and I'm running 2GB of RAM (4GB if I ever get around to upgrading to Windows 7). This could be entirely due to the limitations of MS Paint, however...

YES PLEASE!!! (bolding in your post being my doing, of course)

Thank you so much for all your hard work. Question about the "16-section" map, if it comes to fruition, will it include the outlines of the "unknown lands," such as osse? I'm just curious if that could happen as part of this or if it's a project unto itself.

Thanks again
Steve

Actually I built the entire thing in Illustrator, using simple vector shapes for forests, mountains, etc. When that was done I went through the excruciating process of moving all of those layers into photoshop and prettying it up. The layered photoshop file is ridiculous - something like 3.5 gigs.<chop>

-Rob

3.5 gigs... my bad... that would easily fit on a single-layer DVD-R... but for those of us who don't have Photoshop, it's not going to be as useful. Still, that means that it will fit on conventional media, which means turning it into a torrent is entirely possible; all we need is a free torrent host and scribes willing to seed the file.

As I've said, the only issue I have with cutting the map up is my current software's apparent inability to reasssemble it without massive loss of image quality (and requiring more RAM than I or most others possess). Do any other scribes have ideas as to software better suited for this job than MS Paint? Ideally freeware?

Thanks for all the maps. Being a PW (Persistent World) admin/DM I'm always looking for maps and stuff that can help with character backgrounds. Since we have a lot more than just a few characters running around, it really helps to actually know what some people are talking about, or help them with something.

This is the first time I've seen a map of the Kara-Tur area. I haven't looked over all the areas, but is there a possibility of getting a larger map that shows the location of Kara-Tur in relation to Faerun?

Anyway, if you don't mind (and I'm sure you don') I'll be copying these for my players to be able to peruse. All credit will be given, of course.

Thanks once again for all the excellent maps.

Thanks, Cleric Generic!

Rob: I was perusing the Dalelands area again, and I noticed that Harrowdale (not the town) is labeled twice, and it is the only dale so treated; is there a reason for this? Just curious...

Yes, but just the coastlines. Having no sources to fill in the middle, I've decided not to (for the most part). Osse is blank, Katashaka is filled with "Nyambe", Anchorome is drawn from non-canon sources found on the web, Lopango is my invention (Anchorome and Lopango are only filled in because Maztica is known and they connect... otherwise I wouldn't have). There are other blank lands out there as well.

Okay here's my list of map sections to get you guys this week:

Calimshan
Unther
The Yehimals
The Shaar
Impiltur/The Vast

Jakk I think you asked for one that looks something like this: http://img576.yfrog.com/img576/9008/westheartlands.jpg

Erm... Jakk epic fail...

No other words for it, Rob... I went to save that Western Heartlands map you just linked to... and I already have it. The original link is back on page 1 of the scroll... don't ask me how I missed the map itself when I was stitching things together; I've been downloading all of them as you put up the links... like I said, Jakk epic fail...

Many, many thanks for all of this, Rob... and I'll make sure I've looked at every. Single. Map. In the folder before I post another request...

Edit: Addendum: Mulhorand please? And thank you very much again! I think it was in the batch I asked for in the last few days, but I may have missed it... and yes, I've double checked my "Awesome maps from Rob" folder, and there's no sign of Mulhorand... did I miss a link earlier, anyone?

On a related note: Could you possibly extend that Unther clip to include Chessenta? Greatly appreciated!

This is certainly my last regional request; beyond this, I'm happy to wait for the finished multi-part epic.

Thank you again, Rob, for all of your work on this awesome project. You never did answer my question as to your computer hardware...
