Is there any detailed information out there on Azuth's mortal life? I'm interested to know how he eventually ascended to godhood. Did Ed Greenwood create the Azuth character?

Also who was the first mortal to wield magic in the realms? Were the elves the first of the "modern" races to use magic? Was the knowledge of magic passed down directly from the gods or was it passed on by the creator races?

Azuth is indeed an Ed creation. And the Ol' Bearded One has shared some tantalising tidbits about the Lord of Spells, in his replies here at Candlekeep.

There is Azuth lore in Secrets of the Magister.
There is also some interesting lore on him in Magic of Faerûn.

While still a human Magister, Azuth came into conflict with Savras the all-seeing, a minor deity of divination worshiped in the Shining South, Lands of Intrigue, and especially in Halruaa. Savras was once a Halruaan wizard and apparently had not been a deity for all that long when Azuth fought him and imprisoned Savras in a scepter. Shortly after that Azuth ascended to godhood himself circa 136 DR. At least, that is when the second magister took office, so I presume Azuth ascended around that time or slightly before then.

I still think Azuth is a deep imaskari

why is being a wizard like being a drow? both are likely to find a dagger in the back from a rival or one looking to further his own goals, fame and power

That's right: Azuth was awesome enough that he - a mortal - could duel a deity of magic (and divination) and still win. Or did Savras throw the fight for some reason? I don't really see why he'd want to be imprisoned, but divine motivations can be a bit puzzling on occasion, so there could still have been an ulterior motive behind his actions.

The is another one of those mistakes between books. In Volo's Guide To All Things Magical, Azuth was already a god when he imprisoned Savras.

"During this time of turmoil, two gods elevated by Mystra at different times to aid her by overseeing the portfolio of wizards battled for supremacy. Azuth defeated Savras the All-Seeing and imprisoned his essence within a powerful artifact he had constructed prior to the conflict."

The Lord of Spells, as Azuth was thereafter known, intended to keep the scepter in which Savras was imprisoned as his staff of office. Although reduced to demipower status as a result of the conflict, Savras was still powerful enough to teleport his prison into the Realms where it passed beyond Azuthís reach. (As the All-Seeing One and Lord of Divination Magics, Savras could just barely block even Azuth's divination abilities.)

In Powers and Pantheons, however, there is a variation where they are not Gods yet, or at least Azuth is not:

"The Lady of Mysteries has long been an enigmatic figure worshiped throughout the Realms. To those who revere magic, there is none so beautiful as the Lady of Spells. In the wake of Mystryl's death and rebirth as Mystra, two rival spell-hurlers sought the favor (and some say even the hand) of the Mother of All Magic.

The younger of the two wizards was the brash and powerful Azuth, who delighted in the power and unbounded beauty of magic, while the older of the pair was the deliberate and introspective Savras the All-Seeing, who wasted nary a single spell and saw beauty in magic's precise application. For years the duo fought with neither wizard gaining the upper hand, but both steadily gaining in power. While Savras's careful preparation was initially enough to put Azuth on the defensive, the Lord of Spells battled back over time, demonstrating his superior master of the Weave. Azuth finally shattered his rival's defenses in a climactic battle that split the mountain and created a deep lake. He imprisoned Savras's essence within a magical artifact of his construction that came to be known as the Scepter of Savras. With this he became the High One and the first Magister of Mystra, later to be sponsored by her to become a god."

Lower on the page, however, it says they were BOTH gods at the time.

"He [Savras] was once as powerful as Azuth and shared much of the same portfolio: mages in the service of Mystra, goddess of magic."

If they shared a portfolio, then they had to both be gods already.

In Secrets of the Magister it seems like it says Azuth was not yet a god again:

"It is known that he [Azuth] defeated the god Savras and imprisoned his essence in a scepter, and that he served for many years as Magister before ascending to godhood himself under the tutelage of Mystra - but as to the time and specifics of his career as Magister, reliable history records nothing... and Azuth says even less about."

Basically, the Sages who tell this story can't seem to agree :D
