Just a little something I came across - someone has gone ahead (with Monte's permission, I assume) and created an Oriental-flavored region for Arcana Evolved.

Its called Lands of the Jade Oath, and it looks pretty good, if you're a fan of Oriental RPing. The only thing stopping me from getting it is the weird price plan - it appears to be a (pricey) subscription, with materials to come.

What if it doesn't do well? Do they just cancel the rest and whoever subscribed winds up paying $120 for a single book? As much as I am interested in this product, I have to think long and hard about given that much money to an 'iffy' endeavor.

Still, Arcana Evolved is a great 'next gen' D20 system, so this will probably be a terrific add-on product... if it gets off the ground.

Well Met

I am Steven D. Russell the Publisher of Lands of the Jade Oath

Let me answer your questions as briefly as possible.

quote:
with Monte's permission, I assume

Yes, we operate under Monte Cook's Arcana Evolved Limited License.

quote:
What if it doesn't do well?

It has already done well (we met our production goal yesterday).

It is not a subscription it is a patronage project. If you not familiar with the patronage business model, I would suggest looking at my page for the features and benefits of patronage over traditional publication (such as senior patrons learning what needs to be fixed to suit their style of play because they can playtest it at the alpha and beta stages before publication).

These can be found listed at the page you have linked too and on Wolfgang Baur's Open Design (from whom I took my inspiration, FYI Ed Greenwood has recently contributed to Open Design's Tales of Zobek).

quote:
Do they just cancel the rest and whoever subscribed winds up paying $120 for a single book?

This is a patronage project for two books not a subscription; you get the 300+ full color pdf with option for the print on demand copy at cost (as low as $11-$47 plus shipping depending on the print version the patron chooses); and an exclusive patron adventure that will never be available again.

This comes along with all the features and benefits of a patronage project see above.

quote:
to an 'iffy' endeavor.... if it gets off the ground.

I understand your concern, but this was never an "iffy endeavor" if we had not met our threshold for patrons all money would have been refunded including all PayPal fees. We have now met this goal with 10 days to spare (a 60-day deadline period).

This is the benefit of a patronage model, the money for production is all secure, and there is little risk for both publisher and patron.

I would ask that you look at the names on our ABOUT US page, you will see that all of these people have been around the Arcana Evolved Community for a very long time and many are small press professionals

I am especially proud of having Bill Collins on board who is the Editor for the Wolfgang Baur's Open Deign(such as 6 Arabian Night, Blood of the Gorgon, and Tales of Zobek), he was a playtester for Arcana Evolved and has written and edited supplements for AE as well.

If you have any further concerns or questions about the project I have subscribed to this thread, and would be happy to respond. Our patron forums go live OCT 23rd

Thank you Markustay for your interest in our project.

Thank you Brimstone for the compliment.

I hope to see you both as patrons.

-FWI, I E-Mailed your link to www.enworld.org as a scoop. If they all ready know about. Well no harm done in reminding them about it.

Yes enworld front page is the #1 source of links to our website, I was hoping to release the second preview today, but we found two errors that needed correcting and I am awaiting the layout artist to finish it up. Thanks we take all the free press we can get.

LOL - I think I learned about it from Enworld.

The world goes round and 'round.

Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to explain how it works to us - I really couldn't grasp the 'patronage model' as you call it, and simply likened it to a subscription.

Most of the people around here know I'm a major eastern-flavored RPG junkie, and just about anything that helps me flesh-out my 3e Kara-Tur project is a plus. I was planning on using Paizo's revision, not Monte's, but the two aren't neccessarily mutually exclusive.

I just hope you realized that I posted this here to generate interest, not to be a negative-nelly.

I did not call it a "patronage model" Wolfgang Baur did. I just copied the idea (Wolfgang has been very supportive).

The idea is that you get in at the alpha stage of a books creation, you get a high quality product from a 3rd party publisher with imput that bypasses any marketing strategy, we are creating what our customers want a custom Rpg product.

You want the book and adventure to be compatable with pathfinder beta? I would recomend becoming a senior patron.

One of the Author's main ideas is to make it cross compatible, it allosw for the use of 3.5 and AE core books, so if they keep to thier backwards compatable promise then it should be as easy ass dieing to a red dragon.

Oh I do, I really do, look at the last part of my post "Thank you Markustay for your interest in our project." I was just very concerned with the word "subscription" causing confustion. We have a high hurdle already getting folks to wrap their minds about the patronage model. (if you ask, I would happily post a longer explination if your interested).

Oh and just so you folks know our newest preview is out (Just CLICK HERE)

I would love to here some feedback on it.

Rite Publishing has release another 14 page preview of their wuxia fantasy patronage project. This preview covers the central section of the Lands of the Jade Oath. The project is currently in proofreading and the BETA is expected to be released Sept 09 (it has already been released to patrons).

I really think this is an awesome project, but $70 + S&H ($60 for the PDF + $10 to have it printed) for any RPG book is a bit steep. The most I have ever paid is $50 (each for Arcana Evolved and for the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook).

Your right and those are traditional retail products. This is not a retail product with a mass printing of 5000 copies, no company would produce a product based on a out of print game system (The book you bought, Arcana Evolved is no longer in print), so we charge a premium to support those fans who are willing to pay for continued support of their niche.

The patronage business model takes advantage of the fact that the primary value of the internet to consumers comes not from lower prices but from providing access to products otherwise unavailable (Long-tail theory); in this instance, user-oriented, buyer-dictated professional content.

Also you can buy as many copies of the book for $10.00 as you like once your a patron, so for a DM with 4 players you paid $200 for each of you to have the Pathfinder Rpg/Arcana Evolved, for Heroes of the Jade Oath you would pay $110.
