Hello there, long time lurker here!

Just want to share a map that I have been working on for a few years. It started out as a map of the Moonsea, the Ride and most of Vaasa in the early 1380s DR, but slowly grew to cover more and more land, until it included all of Damara, Impiltur, the Vast, the Dalelands, Sembia, Cormyr and large portions of Anauroch and the Great Glacier as well, before I finally forced myself to stop.
The map itself is very much inspired by Mike Schley's works, but I have tried to make it different enough to not be mistaken for the original.
All locations have been taken from official sourcebooks, magazines, articles, adventures, games, novels, short stories, and directly from designer (mostly Ed Greenwood and George Krashos here at Candlekeep). So everything should be canon (depending a bit on how inclusive your definition of canon is).
Anyway, I hope this can be of use to some of you. And feel free to post any mistakes or omissions I might have made.

Old version:

Updated version:
https://www.deviantart.com/cuiilv/art/North-Central-Faerun-map-804876202

P.S. Feel free to keep a copy of it here at Candlekeep.

Master Rupert,

Thank you for that. I completely spaced which map that was for some reason. I just had it in my mind as a completely different map.

Best regards,

Pretty sure you can still buy it from his site. I don't recall the URL, but a quick Google search should suffice.

Hi cuiilv,
I am having issues opening your file as a svg. I might need to download a svg viewer program as when I attempt to view the map via an internet browser, the browser sits there and I couldnt be bothered waiting longer than 30 secs.

Is it possible to convert the file to a tiff or png? It has been a very long time since I had to work with vector based graphics and I cannot remember if the tiff or png format factor in vector graphics.

I have an amazing tiff file that is over 700mb that allows an awesome amount of zoom for detail.

Seeker cuiilv,

If you ever find that original, please let me know. Amazing work!

Best regards,

I'd be interested to know software you used for this and how long it took you? I'm guessing it has been a slow chipping away at lorebooks and sources to gradually build what you have now but did you have other versions that you got rid of in favour of better maps over the years?

If one (perhaps I) wanted to replicate/expand your work to other areas of Faerun, what would you suggest as a base layer template to work with and do you have any advice for such a grand undertaking?

Brilliant stuff!

Thanks!

The original file is long lost, but the oldest copy is from late 2016, so I probably started that year. And you guess is mostly correct, but posts here at Candlekeep, the FR wiki, Xaeyruudh's Index and other fan maps (especially Markustay's) have been invaluable references to find stuff in various official sources. But what I got now evolved directly from that, there haven't been any radical changes to the design.

I started rather simple with paint.net and most of it is done with that. Did a bit using GIMP and then of course I moved over to Inkscape for the vector stuff.

Mike Schley's Sword Coast map is one of the best looking FR maps (my work is a pale copy of his masterpiece) if you want to got west, or use Fonstad's FR Atlas if you want to line it up fairly good with my map.

And I have just posted an updated version with a few more locations.

Seeker cuiilv,

I tried GIMP and it is super blurred there too, I hate to say. I at least have the first one! :)

Thank you!

Best regards,

cuiilv Posted - 22 Mar 2020 : 14:11:57
Well, making another try, same link as before. Version 1.05 can be opened with GIMP (even if it doesn't display text quite right) unlike previous versions, and it loads faster when I use Firefox to view it. If this doesn't help I don't know what will.
No new locations in this version, just behind the scene technical stuff.
cpthero2 Posted - 21 Mar 2020 : 18:45:43
Seeker cuiilv,

Unfortunately, it's doing the same thing on the new map. Was that original "updated" link, updated, or is there another link I am not seeing?

Best regards,

cuiilv Posted - 19 Mar 2020 : 11:48:56
I have been unable to replicate the problem, making debugging this a bit tricking. I have uploaded a new version with a few settings changed, but I have no idea if that might fix it for you.
I'm using Inkscape to make it, it's free and you can use it to view the map, change it for your own needs, export it to a pixel based image, extract the heraldry, and so on.

Master Krashos,

I think you just may be spying on me... like someone from the Church of Mask, or Leira perhaps...

Seeker cuiilv,

I would love to get my hands on that vector based heraldry too! I've been wanting modernized, super sharp looking heraldry for a long time! :)

Seeker cuiilv,

I also forgot to include this information you specifically asked about:

Zooming on the original map didn't cause any blurring at all, even if I zoomed in to the greatest degree possible. That only happened on the updated map.

Also...amazing work! Thank you so much for putting this together and contributing. What a privilege to use something like that!

When I download the image, if I zoom in it is blur central. Am I doing something wrong?

I have no plans on making maps for other regions. The Moonsea is my corner of the FR, and I don't want to think about all the time it took to find all the obscure locations that exist in the area covered by my map. The FR wiki, Markustay's maps and Xaeyruudh's Index have invaluable in helping unearth some of the locations, but they don't cover everything, and I have no desire to compile a (almost) complete list of locations in an area that's not that close to heart for me.

You can open the image in Inkscape and extract the heraldry. It's all located in a single layer. Feel free to do whatever you want with them (especially improve them, they might be a bit crude in places).
