I'm still hesitant to buy into what they're selling....still haven't read the last Salvatore novel. But if the stories are from the less served parts of the Realms and Drizzt is kept far far away then I might be in.

Let's just hope that "influences from non-European cultures" don't come from places like Britannia, Norrath, Dereth, or Azeroth.

Given we've never covered Faerūn properly in 30 years of published Realms products, it's quite unlikely that they'd be detailing new whole continents. Good to see you Lord Karsus.

Its been quite awhile since it has been, eh Karsus?

Up next in the Forgotten Realms, Top Secret, where magic went awry and "Iceman" and Merle Rasmussen are thrown into the Realms to attempt to assassinate Mystryl or Mystra or Midnight or whatever you want to call her, through time.
Next up, FlashPoint Abeir-Toril...

At any rate, please note that while the upcoming "nautical" adventure is definitely set in FR, nothing here indicates the 2020 products they're teasing will be. So while this may indeed be Zakhara or Mulhorand, it could equally well be Kaladesh or Amonkhet. I don't like Magic: The Gathering so I hope not, but signs point to maybe.

Nothing except the article that was linked in the OP (emphasis mine): "During a Twitch stream yesterday, D&D senior director Nathan Stewart noted that there were plans for upcoming books to explore regions of the Forgotten Realms with influences from non-European cultures. "

The audience question that Stewart was responding to didn't actually mention the Realms, so I thought the article reporting his response was just assuming too much when it specified the Realms.

But I just re-listened to the relevant portion of the Twitch stream and actually, while the questioner didn't mention the Realms, Stewart immediately interjected the Realms into his response. So you're right, they're definitely talking about an FR region or regions.

Is it too much to ask that you wait until we have more than an interview before bashing future products?

And I thought Zakhara, and Kara-Tur, and the Maztica continent were designed for that specific reason... to bring others cultures into the D&D gameworld.

Yeah, but like Maztica almost felt like a copy of real world explorers visiting south America and what happened there. It was too much of a cut and paste of our real world history. I'm glad to see these areas mind you, and I'm personally doing my own things with them, but it shouldn't be that I look at the areas and go "this is where the Aztecs are, and this is the mayans, etc...).

They didn't do this (I don't feel) when it came to Zakhara. There are places like the Isle of Sahu that reference other cultures, but don't MIRROR it. A lot of the old lost civilizations feel like old lost civilizations in another world. It also specifically doesn't feel like Europe. That being said, I've only read Zakhara and never played it, and most of that reading came decades after the release. The stories you hear of TSR being too widespread are indeed true, looking back with hindsight vision. I'm intrigued with the lore, but there was no way I could EVER keep up with what all they were releasing and actually hold down a day job (nor did I have the money at the time to buy it all).

Hmm. Guess I'm one of the few who kind of likes the real-world-analog "far reaches" of the Realms -- Maztica, the Great Glacier etc. (Yes, I'm aware of Ed's dislike of same.) Maybe that's because I came to D&D with the release of 5e, so to me the past is prologue -- I never knew a Realms without an Arabian southern continent, or indeed without the Spellplague.

You aren't the only one. However, I'm of the mind when it comes to those areas to use the time difference to do a reboot on the areas to a degree.... to use the changes in the area (i.e. fill in of the eastern Shaar) to do a reboot on the areas, etc... Now, by a reboot, I'm not necessarily meaning an entire change to the area, but improving on prior lore, etc.. is the path to go. The original Maztica stuff was too derivative and more of a hint of the fantastical should be attempted, etc... That being said, Zakhara was pretty well done, but what happened in the preceding century with the spellplague?

Not a fan of bastardized RW cultures being bolted onto the Realms. Do some of that creative stuff you profess to be good at and get paid real money for and come up with a unique, diverse culture that fits the Realms. That would impress me. A re-hash of "Shining South" and more rajahs, or "Old Empires" and pharaohs, will not.

It refers to adventures, though, not novels. Still, a welcome change.

"Duhversity" suggests it will be not reanimated, but zombified by Mearls & Co.
As in, Hollywood grade theme parks with socialist lectures.
