In RAS's later novels, Gareth and his friends except Kane appear to no longer be with us by the 5E era. Have there been any hints as to how/when they died? Or, barring that, any good fanfic about it? :)

Tree-Gem is dead as of 1480 in canon. It's in the Dungeon article on Vaasa.

EDIT: Ah, you meant at the time of his death. Spellplague. It screwed up everything everywhere else, so why not Damara and Vaasa too?

IF you have that happen, you'll have to have the gemtree die I think.

With nothing apparently being canon, my Aspie self feels completely free to have Gareth die in 1388 stopping an army of demons and their minions attacking Damara from the south. :)

It was more than a 100 years from Ed Greenwood's Realms to the 4e Realms. I think the 5e ones added some more years, but much less. Everyone who was not an elf, gnome or dwarf or something supernatural died during the intervening time. Most probably of natural causes.

In general, if there is any doubt about someone's fate, just assume every human you know from Realmslore died or was changed in a way that made the original character unrecognisable, because, well, adult humans don't have more than 100 years left to live and being changed into something with a longer lifespan than any human, not to mention watching everything that mattered to you die, fade away and change, will tend to profoundly alter a person.

Deliberate design decision, to reduce the number of named NPCs in the Realms and the amount of work involved in writing novels, adventures or sourcebooks set in the Realms. It makes a lot of sense. The desired market demographic are children, tweens and teens who play MMORPGs and while any group of people will be diverse in surprising ways, it's a safe bet that a rich, detailed setting full of interlayered personal relationships and NPCs that have lives and histories of their own, beyond their plot-assigned purpose as Quest-giver, Escort Mission, McGuffin, Reward or Potential Party Member, were not regarded as selling points.

Made most of the 2e and 3e sourcebooks unusable, especially if you liked and used them for all the regular people in them, collected over some three decades of publishing Realmslore; the innkeepers, sages, shopkeepers and other folk who populated Volo's Guides and anything written by Ed. All the little secrets, mundane relationships, homely details and current clack of 1350s to 1370s DR.

Pretty sure that was another of those things they did with the timejump: just quietly shuffled off as many named NPCs as they could.
