In 2012, Coach did some amazing data collation for the mysteries of Sossal.http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16590. I am the lucky owner of an FR Atlas and have been looking in the Sossal area recently. I cannot seem to define between the two ranges (the Mountains of Dareth do not seem to be indicated in the FR Atlas at all). Does anyone agree that both of these ranges are one and the same, just named differently over time and culture?

Ah yes, all in Dwarves Deep. All of this information was what triggered the question in the first place :). Thanks though!

1. Mountains of Dareth (DD p116) (FR11 p54-55)-coach

quote:
The dwarves of the “Ice Kingdom” of Dareth had been warring with seemingly endless flights of white dragons and their bestial servants. With the help of the dwarves of Delzoun, they fled from the mountains of Dareth (now known as the Peaks of Cold Death), to a lone mountain that stood apart from the rest. They named it Mount Sundabar in honor of a city in the Northkingdom that they'd left behind... Dareth's borders lay within the mountain range named for it, plus Mount Sundabar, Heroes' Height, and the high valleys between.-Arravis

Historical mentions of "Dareth" are linked HERE. I don't know if this hinders or helps the cause but it's there if you need it.

Excellent deductions:). Thanks mate, appreciated! I can see from the comparison between my digital atlas and your scans where the variance is.

Not that Markus' answers need any confirmation, but "what he said."

Okay - think I figured it out. A lot has to do with 'lost terrain' between editions.

The Icerim now looks like one range of mountains, and many folks probably think it is... but its not. There is a piece east of Narfell, then a space, and then the 'upper Range'. On older maps, only the lower Range is named 'Icerim' - the upper are not named. I will post a map shortly, when GIMP stops being so finicky (I have ALL the FR maps on one master map, in layers).

I would guess that the upper range has its own name (Dareth) by the folk of Sossal, but the people living in The Heartlands would just call them all 'Icerim'.

There are also the Armridge Mountains within Sossal - you can see that HERE.

EDIT: Finally able to upload it. Photobucket totally sucks - I have to find a better picture-hosting service, you can't even direct-link anymore. If you are able to blow it up (sorry, PB resolution is atrocious) you will see the lower range is named 'Icerim', but the upper range has no name tag.

All of the Mountain Ranges around the Great Glacier have two names - one in 'common', and the other in ulutiu(sp?).

I will check my maps for the two you mentioned.
