Hi fellow scribes...

At our last gaming session the use of close wounds came up, and well we were unsure how to rule it.

This spell cures 1d4 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +5).

If you cast this spell immediately after the subject takes damage, it effectively prevents the damage. It would keep alive someone who had just dropped to —10 hit points, for example, leaving the character at negative hit points but stable.

Used against an undead creature, close wounds deals damage instead of curing the creature (which takes half damage if it makes a Will saving throw).


Can this spell effectively negate a single attack? Let say someone was hit for 100 damage. Or would it simply just heal 1d4+5?

The reason I ask is because of the last paragraph. If someone has 10 hit points receives 30 damage, wound that person be at -20 or -10? In one case the spell does what it promises in the other not so much. I'm unsure if its possible to go below -10 hp.

The example, however, demonstrates that someone who's received a lethal blow (dropping them below -10) is still remains in the negative hit points area but still stable. So if someone's at 10 hit points and receives 30 damage that would put them over -10. A cleric casts this spell and the character receives 1d4 + (caster level, max +5) HP from -10 (for the example, we'll say 6) and so the player isn't dead but is still at -4 HP and stable.

It does seem to assume that it's not possible to go beyond -10 hp. Or, alternatively, that no matter how much damage you sustain, 1 point of healing will bump you up to -9. If that's the case then if you have 10 hp and take 30 (or 500) points of damage, and you receive a close wounds spell, and let's say it comes to 7 points of healing, you're now at -3 hp.

That's not a realistic situation, but it might be one of those places where the rules say "to heck with realism."
